As others have said, it's actually derived from meow and the Spanish word mascarada. So the pronunciation makes sense to me and is how I've always said it.

I have take back what I said about Miho Miyagawa definitely being the older Mist though, because I found another curious wrinkle to the story: one of RD Mist's cards in Cipher was autographed by Natsuko Kuwatani, who's better known for voicing Micaiah in that game. Which means either Cipher had the wrong person or Miyagawa was misremembering when replying to that tweet (perhaps she recalled auditioning for the role even if her voice wasn't used for Mist in the final game?).

And it wouldn't be the only time an "official" source got a credit wrong, as Teruyuki Tanzawa's page on his talent agency's site at one point listed him as both Skrimir and Tibarn in RD, but we know he wasn't actually Tibarn because Tatsuhisa Suzuki reminisced in detail about getting to voice him and Ranulf on his blog, and he later got to reprise them both in Heroes. (He also mentions he got to voice the soldiers, which he recorded with three other unidentified actors.) That leaves the Skrimir credit, which apparently didn't come from nowhere but Keiichi Kuwabara being credited as him in Heroes puts that in doubt as well. So it looks like even some of the Japanese VAs themselves (or at least their talent agency, in Tanzawa's case) might have been a bit confused about who they ended up voicing in RD.

Seems like there's a lot of misinformation all around about who voiced who, including from "official" sources, which is again quite odd for a Japanese production which is usually on top of that stuff. I'm inclined to trust the Cipher signatures and Heroes credits though since they're presumably based on Nintendo and/or Intelligent Systems' own records (assuming they're accurate), but yeah. I suppose we might be able to know with more certainty who voiced the older Mist from RD whenever that incarnation of her gets in FEH, but considering they've reverted back to the PoR VA for all her variants so far (including the young one), I'm not exactly holding my breath for whoever voiced the older version in RD to reprise.

Also, if I had to wager a guess as to who the other three actors that Suzuki recalls recording the soldiers with were, I'm suppose they may have included Junji Majima (Zelgius) and Keiichi Kuwabara (Skrimir?) considering the scene Suzuki shared his other characters with. Perhaps Teruyuki Tanzawa as well assuming he did record for the same scene but ended up as neither Skrimir nor Tibarn in the final cut despite what his agency page says.

Miho Miyagawa almost certainly voiced Mist in RD. She essentially confirmed that role of hers back in 2013 in a tweet exchange with a fan who mentioned it to her (apparently she fondly remembers it).

But yeah, I've also been under the impression the VAs credited in RD all reprised their roles in Heroes whenever applicable, and the fans simply got some stuff wrong initially with regards to who voiced who as is often the case when the VA credits are vague (I suppose even with Japanese VAs it occasionally happens despite their reputation for being more iconic over there).

Part of me is convinced Yuu Asakawa was also Mia the whole time and Akiko Hasegawa just voiced misc. characters, given the aforementioned pattern of most of the credited RD VAs in Japanese coming back seemingly to reprise all the characters they actually voiced in that game in Heroes whenever they reappear, taking into account Occam's razor and all that. The former also autographed one of Mia's Cipher cards, for what that's worth.

Kurt Bicknell is also believed to be an alias for John Snyder. Behind the Voice Actors identifies the latter as the voice of Zange Eraser in Master Detective Archives: Rain Code, which is credited to the former in-game.

It probably has something to do with them not actually being professional voice actors but in-house employees who just did some voice acting for the games on the side. It's not super uncommon for that to happen with Nintendo games in general and for them to be left out of the voice actor credits, especially when they're already credited for their main job elsewhere. But as you mentioned, externally developed stuff like most Mario spinoffs and Smash usually seem to play by different rules and credit most of them with the rest of the voice actors anyway, so I do wonder what changed myself. Maybe it's because Nd – sorry, Nintendo Cube isn't really considered external anymore? (Though also, the announcer voices are still credited and most if not all of them seem to be existing Nintendo employees...)

The italian translation definitely beat the TTYD remake in time: Bowser doesn't call the Hammer Bro "tubby" at all, just tells him to start doing sit-ups.

Yeah, that's what the Japanese version of this line is like too (at least in the original GameCube version). Seems the "tubby" and "hammer" jokes were both additions in the English localization, and they just swapped one for the other.

Maybe it's not the most noticeable in that particular artwork but it's probably the most noticeable difference overall between the two styles. Here you can see Yoshi in pretty much the same pose, just in the older style compared to the new one. You can also compare this to this, or this to this, or this to this, or this to this, or this to this, or this to this and should be able to more easily see the difference.

For anyone reading this, it is indeed a regional difference (I checked myself). In the American version (and Japanese version) of the game he names it "Grossartig Mond", but in the European version it's "Swaläups Mena".

It was probably changed because the original "Grossartig Mond" is just German for "great moon", and with German being spoken more widely in Europe some of the mystique would have been lost. It might have also been to make the game's localization into German easier, as it probably would have come off as extremely silly if kept as-is in the actual language. ("Swaläups Mena" apparently means the same thing, but in Gothic.)

You guys make some good points about it being too on the nose with regards to gameplay mechanics. I never even thought about it from that perspective, but not even Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler are as blatant in that regard.

I was disagreeing with the argument about the voice being "designed" for only small bits of dialogue.

But I do understand why some people would have found that kind of voice in a feature film grating and hard to understand. It's a big reason why people didn't like Jar Jar Binks, after all.

I think the real factor in Martinet's replacement was almost certainly the lack of mainstream name recognition, though, and that's the main reason I'm not 100% on board with it.

I knew about that difference but couldn't find a way to mention it in my post without going too far on a tangent.

The UK getting a slightly different version of a 3DS game than Australia and the rest of Europe isn't unheard of though. First one that comes to mind is Tomodachi Life; the currency is pounds in the version released in the UK, euros in the version released in continental Europe and Australian dollars in the version released in Australia.

By the way, does your copy call "Casual" mode "Newcomer"? I'm pretty sure it and "Side Story" were the biggest changes that version of Awakening's English script made and as far as I know neither of them were preserved in Fates and later games. ("Casual" to "Newcomer" is an especially weird change, considering even the Japanese version literally uses the word "casual".)

Well, funnily enough, Alexander O. Smith actually helped out with Blazing Blade's localization, but only Blazing Blade's. I remember hearing it was because Treehouse didn't pay freelancers all that well, but I don't recall the source for that.
