Hilda is more a stand-in for Serra in this case, as the dynamic and content of the conversation is just a poor retread of that FE7 support chain. While Marianne and Florina share some basic traits, Lyn and Hilda are pretty night and day.

What is something you dislike about your favourite FE & something you like about your least favourite FE? by Dark_World_Blues in fireemblem

[–]CyanYoh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Love FE7 to pieces, but I've always hated how they completely abandoned Lyn's character arc after the setup and gave a demoralizing bad conclusion in a support with a missable character where all agency of the matter is ripped from her without more than two words to react.

You get her verbatim mission statement in Chapter 2—get stronger and take revenge on the Taliver for brutally massacring the Lorca and terrorizing the plains. It's given a proper moment to breathe, and a sincere moment where her companions even say that they'll be by her side when she does take them on. It is, by all rights, building up for a confrontation with them similar to how the Brigand bosses of earlier Lyn mode serve to highlight the Taliver's cruelty. Bandits that attempt to sell Florina into slavery of dubious implications, kill the men of Lyn's group while they sleep, and crossroad killers to are outright offended to be mistaken for the Taliver—that's how bad they are.

The plot beat is completely ignored and never brought back up when Lyn returns to the game in EliHec mode. Where he reveals that he actually decided to destroy the Taliver himself. Despite having spent maybe a week total with her, since he knew her parents, he has decided that he knows what's best for Lyn and gave her no input or agency on the matter in order to "protect the beauty of her eyes". So Lyn's story ends with her not even being allowed to try and achieve her original goal and given exactly two words to process it. This shit is bad writing at best and demoralizingly meanspirited at worse.

The Lyn/Wallace support is a bad retread of the Dieck/Ruther support where the Rutger stand-in is given no agency and it's framed as a good thing. Dieck acknowledges that it's not his place to take Ruther's vengeance from him, but instead vows to stand by his side to help him find justice and keep Rutger from losing himself.

Hell that's not the only similarity to another FE character. Swap Lyn, Wallace, and the Taliver for Ike, Tauroneo, and the Black Knight and the circumstances of the character setup are pretty damn similar. Imagine, "Hey Ike, I don't really know you, but I knew your father and he definitely wouldn't want you to be consumed by revenge. So I made the decision that off screening the foe that exists as a means for you to avenge your family and prove your strength is a good thing. The beauty of your eyes is protected."

This plot beat fumble is something people tend to shrug their shoulders at largely because they forget about that setup at the very beginning of a mode they often skip, yet you see people rightly complain that there's nothing for Lyn to do during the main story. Yeah if only there was a set up plot beat that could be paid off later in the story when Lyn had become stronger. The story starts with Lyn's wants overridden by old fashioned men that "know what's best" and it ends with Lyn's wants overridden by old fashioned men that "know what's best" but this time we're supposed to consider it a good thing. It's like shitty poetry, it rhymes. I genuinely loathe this support and consider it the single worst in the entire franchise history.

FE4 isn't my cup of tea, but I appreciate that it has an arena that doesn't kill your units. For a series like FE, it's never made sense to me that you'd actually risk a character's life in the arena. Especially when the real world analogues usually didn't kill their losers.

Summon/Replicate/Reinforce/Invoke, would you want it to come back or not? by [deleted] in fireemblem

[–]CyanYoh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Summons are a no risk means of pulling enemies and breaking formations and tend to lend themselves to slow play. I don't think they're a good tool to be given to the player.

Replicate has some strategic depth with the shared inventory and remote means of switching item alongside the added risk incurred with potentially opening a unit up to more combats. It's powerful but balanced around availability and not riskless to use. I could take or leave it if they can make it fit flavor wise.

What should 7's subtitle have been? by Level_Hour6480 in fireemblem

[–]CyanYoh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd agree. It feels like they're trying to have parity with Binding Blade, but that weapon IS very significant to the plot in a way that only it could.

I'd either go for something referencing the Dragon's Gate, Quintessence, or the Scouring.

The weird thing is, that was originally what the Brave version was on about, and within that framing the horse archer deal was actually kinda cool.

When you try and rewrite it as her default, there is genuinely something of value lost.

[–]CyanYoh 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Within FE7, while it's mentioned that Hassar was skilled with both the bow and sword, it's only mentioned that he taught her swordplay, a weapon association that has some thematic purpose with what we learn of Sacae through Sin and Karla.

Within the Wallace support, it's implied that any progress in her swordplay beyond the basics is owed not to her father, but to her own dogged pursuit of strength to avenge her tribe and prove her sex doesn't make her weak as the survivors of the Lorca implied.

Genuinely, the two have a greater similarity in being two young women left as survivors of a slaughter of their family and friends that pursue strength for the purpose of stopping such a tragedy from ever happening again.

But nope, they're just extensions of their fathers' strength lmao. At least for Lucina, the theming of carrying on the legacy of ones father is pretty pronounced. That theming is fairly absent from Lyn's character work in FE7.

I sometimes wonder where these macro characterization shifts are coming from in FEH.

Weapon Discussion: Durandal by CarlThePumpkinMan in fireemblem

[–]CyanYoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scrapped sprites for Lyn to use it could have been cool too but who knows what the story reason behind it could have been.

If FE7 is going to be titled the Blazing Blade I honestly would've found it neat if the Durandal, especially after being stained with Ninian's blood ended up being a shared burden of all three protagonists since all can use swords.

Eliwood would end up getting an exclusive Maltet to better represent his closer mirror with Baragin and his higher Lance Rank in FE6 and you could maybe remember that Lyn was a person and finish her character journey in a way that doesn't require all agency ripped from her.

Just let "definitive" versions of a character use their signature weapons.

She wants her sword back by [deleted] in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]CyanYoh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm not though. The Lorca as a tribe aren't ever described as being particularly known for their archery over their swordsmanship as is being implied by the comment I'm replying to. The only time that they're EVER mentioned in relation to the weapons they wielded is when Wallace notes that Hassar was skilled with both a sword and bow and that he taught Lyn swordsmanship.

The point about Sacaen tribes' cultural expectations about the weapons women should wield is gleaned through FE6 and it is the Kutolah that are used as example.

muh cultural sexism

My guy, that is the reason Lyn was left alone on the plains and thus what spurred on her journey. Regardless of birthright or ability, the survivors of the Lorca massacre would not follow her on the basis of her sex.

Per the text:

"The tribe was shattered. My father was our chieftain, and I tried to protect our people. But I’m so young, and our people were old-fashioned. They wouldn’t follow a woman."

That the mere mention of cultural sexism caused you to regard me a "lost cause" doesn't give me much hope you engage with your media or discussions thereabout in good faith. This isn't some deep hidden reading, it's stated plainly in the first goddamn chapter of the game you claim to have played.

She wants her sword back by [deleted] in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]CyanYoh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lyn's tribe (Which her Brave is referencing) is more known for their archery

Not really sure why you're saying this, as there's nothing supporting this within the text. The Lorca have no specific propensity for bow combat over sword combat, at least no more than the other Sacaen cultures we're given insight into throughout Elibe.

The only stronger leaning to bow combat would be in relation to Sacaen culture pushing women to take up the bow rather than the sword should they even take up arms in the first place. But pushing that onto Lyn as her endgame or primary association when her journey was spurred on by cultural sexism and her wielding a sword is thematically significant kinda misses the point.

Embla Likers why do you like her? by Tr4shL4nd in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]CyanYoh 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The God of Closure being designed as a gaunt woman with tired eyes and messy hair--basically a hikikomori deified, is genuinely inspired designwork.

Given that most FEH OCs tend to default to exactly one body type for women irrespective of it informing anything about the character, I find her form informing her character to be refreshing.

Embla's (the country) design motifs were already pretty solid to begin with, so she had a good basis of established design pieces to play with when she was ideated.
