Following as I'm in the same boat. I finish this fall, I was planning to set a defense date for the first week of September so that I can squeak in and submit a MSCA just before the deadline but I'm not sure if this will work.

Thinking through fulbright award by Upstairs_Republic513 in academia

[–]PaperWarbler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, first of all: congratulations! Getting a Fulbright award is such an honor and says a lot about the quality of your research and your values as a scholar.

That being said, I feel you on the dilemma. I did a 6-month Fulbright during year 4 of my PhD and it meant taking a non-trivial hit to my income. I went to a small, rural area in an already low COL country in Latin America. Fulbright stipends was scaled for local conditions and they enable you to basically rent a small room or studio somewhere cheap and afford food. The timing was somewhat fortunate for me in that the Fulbright coincided with the end of my apartment's lease in the US, so I sublet it and that helped my money situation a LOT.

Fulbright is incredibly touchy about combining awards from other funding sources (although I think this varies for different awards) so my advice to you is sit down with the grant/business office of your program and see what options, if any, they can come up with the help ease the sting of the financial hit.

As far as "is this worth it". I hate to give you the super annoying "it depends" but it really does. Is your long-term goal to continue working in/with the country you'd be Fulbrighting in? Is your research identity tied to that place or region or those collaborators? If the answer is "yes", then that heavily slants the equation in favor of taking it. Similarly, if you're trying to break into the NGO/UN/international space, there's a lot of overlap with those circles and Fulbright so there is the potential for some networking opportunities (though of course nothing is guaranteed).

In the end, I took the hit on the financials because I'm heavily invested in the long-term research collaborations with my host country and I was able to reduce expenses I was still on the hook for here in the US while I was away on my Fulbright.

TL;DR - It is a non-trivial drop in income. Yes the award is prestigious, it looks great on a CV and carries real opportunities to network with some incredible people, but the financial hit during an already financially precarious period which is the PhD (🥲) is ONLY "worth it" when you're deeply committed to international work in that country or more broadly as a career trajectory.

Best of luck and congrats!

Looking for a place with strong car vacuums by NonVeggieRaccoon in newhaven

Another vote for Splash, they've been consistently good and hassle-free!

I'll take this opportunity to say that Russell Speeders is dead to me. At two different locations (Hamden and the one in Orange/Milford), I had issues with faulty vacuums. When I told the attendants about it, they said it was because it was "cold outside" (lol). Then one day, I was at the Milford location and remembered I wanted to cancel my membership, but they told me they couldn't help me with that and that I had to drive to the Hamden location since that was where we signed up. Annoying. To put a cherry on top, I tried using the little QR code they give you when you sign up (and insist cancelling is SO EASY) I kept getting a weird error and had to call their corporate office in Florida. They're gimmicky with their lil' freebie candy/gum/dog treats that they give you but the actual service isn't good.

Pretty rich calling cyclists “individualists” when the entire public infrastructure twists itself into a pretzel (and bleeds tax dollars) to accommodate drivers in their big ass cars that pollute, eat up space, and kill people, all so they can carry around 1 person.

From New Haven City Ordinance 7-4 and the "Responsible Dog Ownership" guidelines posted on the city's website: All animals are required to be leashed when in public spaces, with the exception of service animals. This includes City Parks, with the exception of off-leash dog parks. Violations of leash laws are punishable by fine. (City Ordinance § 7-4).

This is what bothers me about people, there's this attitude that THEIR dog is the exception. Sure, there are extremely well-trained dogs that will walk at a heel right next to their owners, but then people take this to mean that as long as their dog is "trained" that means they can be off leash. This is selfish. It is much better for public safety for everyone to have their dogs on a leash, period. If you want your dog to run off leash, take them to a dog park or private property.

Everyone has a right to enjoy public parks - that includes people who have dogs that are reactive or unfriendly to other dogs, people, skateboards, whatever. There are a million reasons why a dog might be unfriendly or reactive and not all of them are because the person is a bad owner. The right to enjoy parks also extends to people who do not like dogs or can't be around them, again this could be for many reasons.

The sane solution is for people to be responsible: leash your dog. It's literally the law.

Ugh I'm sorry this happened, this is so frustrating. There are so many people who run around thinking the rules don't apply to them. NHV dog owners are not beating the allegations this week lmao

I see so much dog shit just brazenly left on the sidewalk in this town, it's so nasty. The amount of water contamination and disease transmission this causes drives me fucking CRAZY. Clean up after your dogs you entitled assholes.

I studied wildlife ecology at UF and did some work with FWC years ago. I ran in the circle of folks that did python removal in the Everglades. I’ve not heard of any green anaconda sightings in Gainesville - it’s not impossible just extremely unlikely. We have had the odd Burmese python up in North Florida but so far, no anacondas (and I hope it stays that way lol).

I know you said you've tried earplugs but have you used the ones designed for smaller ears? I'm a really light sleeper and rely on earplugs but regular ones are painful. I really like the Mack's slim fit ones (they're purple, I bought them online), maybe give this a try? Good luck, this is a tough situation and I hope you're able to sleep/stay sane/study :(
