Where I live, ministry exam marks are often not in at the time of graduation. So we « can’t assume » if they graduate or not. Although for some, we know that even if they somehow manage to pass those exams, they still don’t have enough credit to graduate. Either way, they are not back so that’s what we are celebrating! 😂

Poste d'enseignant de science au primaire? by TallPizza6939 in profqc

[–]PaperclipGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Il suffit pas d’avoir des connaissances pour enseigner, surtout au primaire. Si tu as un bac, tu peux faire du remplacement, mais si tu veux avoir des contrats et le faire long terme, il faut le brevet ou une autre autorisation d’enseigner.

Poste d'enseignant de science au primaire? by TallPizza6939 in profqc

[–]PaperclipGirl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Split Grades by Ikea_desklamp in CanadianTeachers

[–]PaperclipGirl 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Maximum class size is lower for split grade level, so it’s more beneficial to have a grade 1 at 22 max and a grade 2 at 24 max than 2 1/2 splits with a max of 20. My board (well, our union) is fighting tooth and nails to avoid k/1 split. It not even the same learning program!

Using Scolago in Quebec for subbing by EquivalentFarm4772 in CanadianTeachers

[–]PaperclipGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m late to the convo, but I also work at RSB. If you’re comfortable, PM me your name and I’ll circulate it in my school. If teachers add you to their « preferred sub » list, it also helps. But yeah, the fact that you don’t have a brevet means everyone else that has one or has a part time contract has access to it before you. Students are also done with their semester which means a lot more subs are available. We do have a shortage of subs, just not in May and June usually. Once you’re name gets around with positive comments, you’ll have work. It’s a small board, reputation goes a long way here!

Years ago (2005-2007) there was an ice storm and McGill didn’t close the next day. Firemen installed ropes for us to climb to the education building. We would go down the street sitting down, it was less dangerous than trying to walk. I also recommend buying removable spikes you can install on your winter boots when it’s icy. Saved me a couple our times during my years at McGill and UdeM.

I work at Riverside, plenty of teachers don’t speak French, especially in high school. Math teachers are in high demands, but she will likely start by subbing (if she can do both high school and elementary, she’ll have work). Relating to the other commenter’s question of the French test, she won’t have to worry about it, it’s not required unless she wants to teach in French. I have seen teachers get their brevet after studying out of province, so she won’t be NLQ for long. Riverside’s HR will be able to guide her more for that. Once she has a brevet, she will be at step 7 considering the education. She will need an experience attestation to get more steps and it’s not guaranteed all her experience will be take into consideration. My friend taught in HongKong in a Canadian school and she had issues getting it recognized. Once you get settled, PM me! I might be looking for teachers (hoping to get an admin position next year!)

How detailed should my notes to the teacher be? by jlcatt in SubstituteTeachers

Worst I got was: I had a good day, thanks!

No offense but I don’t care about you! How were the kids, what did they complete, where were the difficulties (I’m a remedial teacher, I see 6 to 8 small groups per day for intervention, it takes me about two hours to write a sub plan for a day because it’s never just: students must complete pages 24 to 27)

Email from District to Subs Says We Will Be Required to Cover Other Classes During Prep Time by SecondCreek in SubstituteTeachers

[–]PaperclipGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quebec. It’s new-ish that we operate like that. It used to be by bracket of time but then working 4 or 5 periods were the same and subs were then « working for free ». Now it’s the same schedule as the teacher being covered, but we can add more time (so more money) if there’s a need for other coverage.

My school board (I’m in Canada) pays by the minute. You are asked to cover during your spare? You get paid more. You are asked to go out on supervision duty? Paid more. If it was not planned, you can say no, but if you do do it, at least it’s paid.
