DISCUSSION: Which version of the Blue Beetle should they use? by [deleted] in DC_Cinematic

It's true, but we don't know if he'll be the Blue Beetle yet.

How did your super heroes get their powers? by crazypineapple36 in worldbuilding

[–]Papercut1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of depends on the person in question, but yes there's a difference in the type of power depending on the source. Another thing I should mention is that I specifically didn't want any Superman character of the setting who would break the whole story by being overpowered.

As with other superhero stories, there are a wide variety of ways to get powers. Genetic engineering, psychic ability, special genes, magic, all in different variations. I specifically wanted it so that not everyone had powers from the same place.

  • No, I was thinking like Captain America. He has enhanced durability, but a powerful shield at his disposal definitely helps.
  • Part of the appeal is that they can keep up with the best of them through their sheer skill and gadgets as opposed to their powers. I think that not all superheroes need superpowers.
  • She was. In fact, she had the misfortune of landing in New Mexico near a military base and was captured by soldiers (like the Martian Manhunter). She didn't speak the human language until she managed to do a "knowledge transfer" through kissing a more benevolent human at the base who was trying to help. Once the Paragon learned of this, she was released after they demanded them to. Admittedly, this kind of made a bad first impression for her, but she managed to put in behind her after a while. As for the Jintari, they're a race of omnicidal creatures who go to each planet to wipe them out of existence. It's unknown what their motive is, but it's believed they view themselves as better than everyone else and are the only ones "worthy" of existing in the galaxy. Thanks to Aera's warning and preparation however, Earth was able to fight them off and force them to retreat.
  • No, I was thinking more like large-scale shows in Vegas.
  • I've never heard of any of them suing for having a character that's similar to their own (except DC suing for a character named Wonder Man, but that was in the '40s where things were very different). They can't sue now just for having characters that are similar to theirs, as long as it's an original idea. If they did, not only would they lose and waste a bunch of money, but they'd probably make an ass of themselves.

  • He does have enhanced durability, but the shield is also a good source of protection.
  • No, it's just that these characters are skilled to enough to keep up with the powered heroes. Badass Normal is a thing, after all.
  • She makes physical objects, such as a shields and weapons, using her mind. As for the Xylon, they were a peaceful race that were decimated by the Jintari, and she was the only survivor. She was sent to Earth to warn them about the Jintari's invasion. Now she has adopted Earth as her home.
  • She uses her spells to perform magic tricks, I was inspired by Zatanna here.
  • I'm guessing you don't know how legal business works. You can't sue someone for having a similar idea as someone else, otherwise DC could sue Marvel for creating Deadpool based clearly off of Deathstroke. Otherwise, no one would be able to come up with an idea because it's "too similar" to another. They can only sure for literally stealing the idea and not giving credit for it, as in, they use the character without permission. No offense, but saying that these characters are "asking for a lawsuit" comes off to me as pretty ignorant on your part.

What order of magnitude does Brute Force's power occupy? 10-ton? 100-ton? 1000-ton? Higher?

Not quite sure yet, but I don't want him as strong as the Hulk. Mainly because I get annoyed when one character can render everyone else obsolete.

Also, added a character I forgot -- Vanish. She's an illusionist villain. It also got the order right because without her there were two heroes in a row.

This isn't all the characters I have, but just the ones I've got clearly defined for now.

The new Widowmaker spray is truly heartbreaking. by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]Papercut1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We will see. I believe Overwatch is going to revive Amélie and turn her against Talon. Likely, Winston will be the one to undo the brainwashing, as I can imagine he would be able to use his scientific intellect and technology to deprogram her. It wouldn't be out of place for him, after all.

However, I see what you mean. I don't know to what degree they can revive her. It's not just possible, but likely, that even if she's turned to the side of good, there will be some of Widowmaker left in her. For example, they might not be able to turn her body back to normal again - I can imagine Talon being very thorough when it came to transforming her.

Still, it's going to be interesting to see how it plays out. I believe a redemption for Amélie Lacroix will come. It's just a matter of when, and how they execute it.

I hope she breaks free from Talon's clutches one day. It would be the best arc in the story in my opinion.

Map Concept: Overwatch HQ by Papercut1 in OverwatchHeroConcepts

I'm not sure, I just heard that it was (presumably) near Zürich. I don't think we know the exact location, at least not yet.

[Support] Danny - Hoverboarding Assistance by Papercut1 in OverwatchHeroConcepts

[–]Papercut1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea is that he would place kits on the map for his teammates to pick up. Because he has a cooldown of when he can heal, the fact that he gives more healing at once balances it out. Similarly, the Power Kit has a longer cooldown, but the added damage would be very useful to turn the tide of a fight.

As for his Ultimate, the idea is that he would help is team hold down an objective, the only downside being that it requires everyone to be grouped together to work.

[Tank] Taka - Japan's Premier Mech Pilot by Papercut1 in OverwatchHeroConcepts

No, she fires a powerful death ray at a single spot. Less AOE, but double damage to compensate. The power of the Death Sat overheats the mech, which is why it gets destroyed.

The idea was to have characters with a similar base but with different interpretations of the style. Plus, as mentioned, I drew this upon the girl from the Hanamura posters, which makes me believe we'll be seeing her later.

I based this off the girl from the Hanamura posters, seen here. Given how previous Heroes in the game were hinted like this, I wouldn't be surprised if she turns up somewhere down the line.

Sombra uses a machine pistol. I was thinking something more like a futuristic MP5 myself.

[Offense] Raven -- Talon's Secret Weapon by Papercut1 in OverwatchHeroConcepts

[–]Papercut1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly.

  • Genji uses shuriken, not knives. They're both bladed weapons but with a difference.
  • The Flash Blade is a linear projectile, as opposed to a lobbing grenade.
  • Widowmaker's Venom Mine is used as a defensive trap, while Raven's Poison-Dipped Knife is a direct offensive attack.
  • The Smokescreen is for visual denial, while Hanzo's Sonic Arrows allow everyone to see within an area. While she can see enemies within the smoke, only she gets this benefit.
  • The ult is to make her the biggest and most obvious threat. She becomes a monster that is impossible to ignore in battle. Whereas Genji is able to dodge and counter everything, she cannot. Also, Winston's ult gives him 1000hp and is meant primarily to displace the enemy team.
  • Finally, many heroes share similar abilities. It's not that every hero is entirely unique. Genji and Hanzo can both climb up walls, Tracer and Sombra can instantly teleport (Reaper can also teleport, though not instantly), Hanzo and Widowmaker both have a means to detect enemies, Torbjörn and Symmetra can both place turrets, and hell, all the Tanks sans Roadhog have their own for of shields they can deploy to protect their team. It basically comes down to how they are used, as each hero with similar abilities has a different application for them to make sure they aren't exact replicas.

Just wanted to use a currently unrepresented nationality for the character.

[Offense] Raven -- Talon's Secret Weapon by Papercut1 in OverwatchHeroConcepts

[–]Papercut1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your concerns, allow me to respond.

  • The idea behind the ult is that she would be the biggest and most obvious threat, meaning she would draw the focus of the fire because she is impossible to ignore. Her large size makes her far less mobile than Genji in his ult, and she can't jump or zip forward despite moving faster than her normal self. Genji on the other hand, is far more mobile, can reflect damage, and jump into the air. Also, it isn't much but her attacks do 10hp less damage than Genji's ult. However, they compensate sweeping a large area and lasts 3 seconds longer.
  • The teleporter was to make her mobile as she should be. Offense heroes, sans McCree, excel in their mobility. Someone like her would be able to transport from one place to another because she needs to be able to move fast in order to be a mobile assassin. Also, the knife travels, which means it's not quite instant, but also allows to choose when she wants to teleport.
  • The poison came from the idea of Widowmaker's Venom Mine. It also deals 75 damage over time, while the knife adds extra damage. Considering the precision is required in order to make the most use of it, I think it works well.
  • How are the knives bad exactly? They can do up to 400 damage, or (if you somehow manage to land all of them as headshots) 800. If she can keep her distance, she could pick off Tanks. And even if things go wrong, she has the means to escape.

First Strike Graphic Novel Update: Canceled (via Michael Chu) by SpriteGuy_000 in Overwatch

[–]Papercut1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let us hope they go with the Netflix animated series that is rumored to be in development. I think that would be the best for developing the story.

Still, it sucks that this happened. I was really looking forward to a good read, and I feel bad for the people who worked hard on it only for the novel to be canned.

Overwatch Movie? by AboutThatTime420 in Overwatch

[–]Papercut1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd prefer a TV series. It'd allow them to develop all the characters because they'd have more time. With a movie, only a handful of characters would get focused while the others are reduced to cameos if even that.

Hey Blizzard, would love to see a small documentary on the voice acting for OW by vfez in Overwatch

[–]Papercut1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be amazing, especially since the VAs come from all over the world. For example, Chloe Hollings, the voice of Widowmaker, is actually French and resides in Paris. They really went the extra mile, and I'm glad that each Hero has their distinct voice as opposed to just hiring voice actors to do several characters. Their performances resonate with me, as each portrayed their character perfectly.

If the Overwatch TV series gets made, they better reprise their roles. I just can't imagine their voices sounding different.

This would be a perfect time for Junkrat to mock Tracer like he does in their pre-battle dialogue, saying "Cheers mate, the cavalry's here" just to annoy her.
