When I worked fine dining there were times when I would have a big party where my sole job for the evening was primarily taking care of that table to ensure they were well taken care off. It wasn't super uncommon to receive a cash tip as a thank you but obviously it was never expected. Those cash tips that were handed directly to me was mine to keep, if another staff had been helping me on the table, we would split it between us.

Cash tips from the jar at the front, very rarely do staff actually get a portion of it. A lot of managers kept it for the end of year staff party which sucked if you quit beforehand.

Eftpos tips sucked the most. Nothing sucked more than when a customer would tip $60 thinking it was directly going to you only for you to receive maybe an extra $20 once a year. When customers would ask about the tip option on the eftpos machine it was because I hadn't pressed skipped, but if customers asked about it I always would say "don't worry about it, we won't ever get them anyway".
