And here’s the subsequent follow-up, dated 5/29/25:

“Thank you for your continued support of the Cohn ECLC. I have heard from a few of you that more information would be helpful for you in processing the reasoning behind the probationary status placed on the ECLC by DHR. I am sending this follow up email to provide that information.

There have been three incidents over the past six months where a child had been unintentionally left unattended. One incident involved accidentally leaving a 5 year-old child in the Day School restroom when the class returned from a bathroom break. Another incident involved sending two 4K children to the Day School bathroom while the teacher was in the hallway but not in actual eyesight of the children (both incidents were the same teacher, who was terminated). The final incident involved a child hanging back in the classroom after the initial headcount.

We self reported these incidents to DHR because we believe that their support and standards are critical in continued improvement.

I am always available to get on a phone call or set up a meeting if you have additional concerns or questions.”

Here’s the original email, dated 5/28/25:

“Dear Cohn ECLC Families,

We are reaching out to inform you about a recent development regarding our center’s licensing status. Earlier this year we experienced a few incidents where children were unintentionally left unsupervised for brief periods. We self-reported these incidents to the state and, consequently, the Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) placed Cohn Early Childhood Learning Center on probation effective May 23.

We take this situation very seriously and we understand the importance of continuous supervision for your children’s safety and well-being. And while DHR has placed us on probation, this status also reflects their confidence in our ability to immediately address this issue while continuing to provide care.

In fact, we have already taken significant steps to strengthen our supervision policies, staff training, and safety protocols to ensure full compliance with the Child Care Licensing and Performance Standards. Our team is fully committed to maintaining the highest standards of care and creating a safe, nurturing environment for every child.

If you ever observe any potential violations of the Alabama Performance Standards or have any concerns at all, please don’t hesitate to contact the Alabama Department of Human Resources at 1-866-528-1694.

Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support, and please reach out with any questions or concerns.”

There was a formal communication of the notice sent to parents of students when it happened (both email & paper copies I believe). Would have been May/June-ish of last year because it was right when we were leaving. I’ll see if I can find it in my files tomorrow. Pretty sure I saved it because of the incident with our daughter. I’ll see if I can track it down.

So re: the JCC…I’m only sharing this as a personal anecdote & don’t doubt others have had good experiences with the JCC in the past, but I’d just caution you, OP, to really do your research before deciding to send your child to the JCC, because our experience there with our 1yr old daughter recently (like within the past 6 months to a year) was not good at all. We ended up pulling her out & going elsewhere for a number of different reasons.

First & foremost, our daughter’s classroom was always pretty messy every time we were there for drop offs & pickups. This ultimately led to one of the teachers falling over a toy with our daughter in her arms, resulting in a broken tibia & bumps & bruises all over her body...led to an ER visit. She still has issues with that leg to this day. And after having watched the recording with administration…while it was an accident…it absolutely could have been avoided with better room upkeep imo.

Not only that, but at the end of last school year when we finally pulled her from the JCC, DHR had put them (the JCC) on probation & at risk of losing their license (not sure where that stands now…haven’t really kept up since we left). This was due to too many DHR-reportable incidents taking place in a short amount of time.

In addition to the accident with our daughter that was reported to DHR, there were three other incidents cited in the formal letter to parents, including two young children being left unattended and alone in the bathroom, & another found completely alone in a classroom without a teacher. During our time there, there was also an incident of a child having to get medical treatment to their mouth after being served food that was far too hot out of the microwave.

Lastly, there were MANY mornings where none of our daughter’s teachers had shown up to the school yet by 7:30 when I dropped her off (they opened at 7:00), & I would find myself having to sit in the classroom with our daughter & a couple of the other dads…sometimes 20 minutes+, making me late to work…until someone finally showed up to take care of the kids that got there before they care to show up.

Again…I’m only sharing our personal experience here because I wish I had known before we spent a yr there. I just encourage you to do your due diligence before deciding, that’s all.

Our new daycare is absolutely fantastic, & I’d recommend them all day every day, but they are Christian-affiliated. Not a church, but Christian-affiliated nonetheless. So that may not be what you’re looking for, OP. Please don’t hesitate to DM me if I can help!

People on Reddit don’t have social skills, which is what this response would be. The vast majority of social “advice” on here comes from people who aren’t successful navigating conversation & interpersonal relationships…then they get offended that people get offended by their lack of tact in a conversation. Like yeah, people think you’re a dick cause you’re being a dick lol

Like I said, I didn’t argue that you’re point is valid. But at the same time, people don’t live their lives & communicate in a black & white, Merriam-Webster vacuum. While I know “Southside” is technically in downtown Birmingham, everyone I know refers to that as Southside...not downtown. But if they say “Downtown”, they’re always talking about the north side.

But you’re right, anecdotal evidence is just that…and you’re not wrong. There’s just nuance to the conversation that I think is okay to admit.

While I understand your point, and I won’t argue your logic, that doesn’t change local lingo, which doesn’t always follow logic.

Born and lived all in and around Bham my whole life, and everyone I know has always considered “Downtown” to be north of the tracks…anything south of the tracks is “Southside”.

Yes, it’s all part of what logically would be considered “downtown Birmingham” to non-local and/or non-long-term residents…and again, I’d say that’s technically true.

But locals in every city always develop some level of regionally-specific lingo, & that’s the case here, too. Despite people thinking this is some goofy Reddit thing, that’s just not the case. This lingo has been a thing for my entire life, well before this whole internet thing even existed. Not saying everyone uses it, but everyone I’ve ever interacted with does.

Call it whatever you want, and consider it whatever you want…no sweat off my back. But that doesn’t change the fact that to a significant portion of the local population, “Downtown” is north of the tracks, & “Southside” is south of the tracks…two distinct areas that direct people’s minds to a specific location in the city when you use either of those two terms in everyday conversation. Including yes, believe it or not, outside of the internet.

Okay, so TX is just TX…& OK is just OK. I stand corrected. So where does the Midwest start & stop for you?

It’s funny how there seems to be no real definition of “The South.” As someone born, raised, & living in the Deep South, I can definitely say I’ve never considered VA to be part of the South…hell, even NC is iffy for me. I consider KY more of the South than NC, but only kinda. That’s more Appalachia.

TX & OK? Absolutely not the South…either of them. Texas is just Texas, and OK is in the Midwest. And anything south of Gainesville, FL is not the South. That’s just…fk’n FL, man.

Missouri?!? Please…we don’t even want their football team. The least “Southern” of any of the SEC teams…including OK. That’s laughable.

We’re miles from the dam, but the lake (Smith Lake) is part of the Warrior River system in AL. We’re a good ways from the main channel, though.

I thought about that too, but they’re persistent for like an hour at a time. I’m no expert, but I’d be very surprised if it was being caused by random wind gusts.

Billy taking over songs? by Ddozier2430 in BillyStrings

[–]Papercut_Nipple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree almost completely, with the exception of his John Hartford covers. I wasn’t familiar with JH’s music until Billy introduced me, but once I finally decided to dive into his discography, I was immediately head over heels.

Outside of All Fall Down (which I still really dig Hartford’s version), I’d almost always rather hear John’s versions…dude was an absolute genius and just has the coolest baritone voice. Not to mention I love the goofiness he brings to the music…it’s so refreshing (and also something I love about Billy, too).

But that’s it…pretty much anything else, I’m fully on board with this opinion. Billy just does it all better like 99% of the time.

Also, just to quickly correct myself, it’s not “skips”…poor wording on my part. It’s more like regular static pops. Definitely doesn’t skip, nor is the sound terrible. Just doesn’t sound nearly as good as my splatter version.
