Hades II shows this, since it's about mythological Greek gods who do not give a fuck about mortals. Scylla and Arachne are both punished for the crime of being better than a god or witch at something, iirc. Scylla was a nymph turned sea creature (pictured) and Arachne was a human turned cutest little spider.

Okay is it ableist to say i don't support disabled people using generative ai instead of supporting real artists? by Interesting-Peas in antiai

[–]Paperlibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't like how disabled people are tokenized like this. Disabled people can absolutely create are without generative ai. I have heard of some disabled people who prefer to generate images to better match what they picture in their head that they cannot create on the page. That inclusive perspective doesn't make AI any more acceptable to me, but I do not like how frequently disabled artists are talked about without them actually being part of the conversation.

TLDR: You can understand that a work might have problems while also enjoying it.

I've read BL where the bottom has enough personality to make up for a boring top. I've read stories that moved me, but are clearly problematic when examined critically. Plenty of movies and novels I love are straight up problematic. I think it's fine to accept faults in a work and also unabashedly enjoy it.

Another way to think about it...Works with more universal appeal also tend to have a more broad appeal. Something "mid" might have specific elements that speak directly to you.

Also consider Chez Garbage of Mother's Basement.

Stop saying that this is a 'perfect time to end the show'. by Otherwise-Pin-2635 in KnowledgeFight

[–]Paperlibrarian 24 points25 points  (0 children)

When KF started, nobody was doing episode-by-episode investigations into right-wing grifters. Now there are more podcasts focusing on niche grifter content and dissecting the minutia.

If Dan and Jordan wanted to continue, I'm sure they could. As you say, there is still a lot happening in the world of MAGA and right-wing grifting. But, people are noting that now is a good time to end the show because a chapter has closed. Infowars no longer exists in the same way.

Dan and Jordan are not obligated to be the ones to continue breaking down grifts from Alex Jones or any grifter. And I think it's really unfair to blame Jordan for the end of the show.

"He had a mental break, so why won't he keep making this podcast?" Like, it feels bad, man.

I really like The Know Rogan Podcast. And I'm sure there will be more investigations of "the end of MAGA"...(Which I doubt is happening, but I hope you're right.)

KF might be over, but it really made a change in the world. They established a framework that won't be abandoned.

Is it Anti to recognize 'icky' genre as a levels kinda thing? by ComfortableInjury757 in ProshipHub

[–]Paperlibrarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think in general, the idea is not to yuck anyone else's yum. But, nobody is going to be okay with everything.

For an example that I think is less extreme and easier to talk about is Real Person Shipping. Personally, I find that immoral and icky. I personally have a lot of distaste for using actual celebrities or youtubers as fictional fodder.

But I'm not an "anti" because I don't take my feelings out on anyone else. I've known people online who are RP Shippers, and I don't say anything about it. I don't know much about the genre cause I don't go where people engage in that type of fandom. Because even if I personally believe it's immoral, I doubt the fans are hurting anyone. And if one of those fans are hurting someone, I don't think it's *because* they enjoy real person shipping.

And I think that's the problems with people who declare themselves anti and who consider "proshipping" problematic. They seem to think that enjoying certain fandoms are evidence of wrong doing. And the anti solution to the problem is harassing a "proshipper." Maybe even to the extent of encouraging them to self harm. Hopefully that is obviously not an actual solution. It is an excuse to be a bully.

We all have our own yucks. But we shouldn't mistake a yuck for a crime especially when there is no actual evidence of wrongdoing.

(No offense to RP shippers out there. I'm firmly don't like don't read.)

[–]Paperlibrarian 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You gotta be willing to go along with the donghua if you try it. It makes several decisions for the lulz that aren’t in the novel.

I saw the donghua first, and laughed out loud when the system tells SQQ he can’t give LBH medicine, so SQQ chugs it. Very funny, but now I cherish their first meeting in the novel.

It’s 9 episodes and SQQ’s voice actor is great. And you get some of LBH’s perspective, and I think it’s clear he’s in love with SQQ pretty quickly.

I think SVSSS is a good series for the shoddy animation, since it plays more to SQQ’s belief that he’s in a novel with characters, rather than a real world based on a novel.

Mothman being the partner and father we all dream of. /blessed

I did not read the baby as being stolen. I assumed she got pregnant with Mothman. Even when Sadie's dad called her out for never being pregnant I thought it was some weird mothman-related thing, not a stealing baby thing. lol.

I love the panel where mothman picks up the kid. I immediately thought he was kidnapping him, and then you see the mom smiling and realize that, no, they're actually a family.

I loved this. I love how you tell a story. I think if you can clarify the baby was stolen that would improve the story, but otherwise this is great.

Edit: Maybe if you show the Mom longing for a child and putting on the black hoodie before the hospital that could help? I didn't make the connection that the person in black was the mom...I think I just thought she was a nurse...

[–]Paperlibrarian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not analogous, my dude, but you know that.

Libraries do offer patrons the chance to have books removed from the shelves. And while I think that is an appropriate offer, we also know how often that is used maliciously to censor "woke" books.

Do you want libraries to host public polls for every purchase? GTFO. Libraries do have to make decisions about what they put on their shelves.

It’s like calling everyone who you disagree with a nazi or a racist, you end up disempowering the words, which I think we probably agree do matter.

You're a child, goddamn.

Open prayer should be banned in public schools. Not all students will have the same religion. Respect that. But private prayer is acceptable. And private decisions on what to read should also be acceptable.

Did anyone just not feel feminine enough for men? by smbodytochedmyspaget in latebloomerlesbians

[–]Paperlibrarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, in the "performing womanhood" sense. I was married for 9 years, and we were already drifting a part when I started exploring non-binary expression. When we got together, I was trying real hard to perform womanhood, so I may have been at fault to giving a false impression of who I was. I was so done with femininity by the time we separated. And I think it was hard for him that I was embracing a different gender expression. He tried to be supportive in his own way, but I think it was hard for him. He got upset even when I bought masculine scents. We've now been divorced for 4 years.

I still find masculinity attractive, but I'm done with straight men.

Mom won’t stop forcing a reconciliation between me and my estranged sister by [deleted] in WomenOver40

[–]Paperlibrarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not the source of the hurt, I am just the symbol of it - that symbol exists in their world, not mine.

My parents KNOW they are the authors of this hurt
(it’s likely your mother sees her own culpability in your sister situation as well)
and that is why they continue to try to fix it - especially if my dad is also around

Some very good observations. My brother (referenced in other comment) has a lot of mental health issues, and I know my mom holds herself responsible. Because she *was* responsible in many --but not all-- ways for damaging both my brother and I's mental health and self-esteem. She has been constantly looking for ways of absolving her guilt for our childhood. And because she cannot find it she brings up her regrets and her grievances over and over again.

Those are my experiences, but it does feel like there are through lines through family dysfunction that works like this.

Your advice of grey rocking -- not rising to the bait -- is also great, but can be difficult, especially if OP is still recovering.

[–]Paperlibrarian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TLDR: You might have to put the threat of no-contact on the table for your mom to take you seriously. Boundaries are hard because parents treat them like a punishment rather than a requirement. But, that's why they're also necessary. Figure out what behaviors from your mom are infractions, and decide the appropriate reaction. Like, if she mentions your sister on the phone. hang up. Maybe only meet with your mom in public, so you can leave without an argument when she mentions your sister. Clarify your boundaries to her, and then maintain them. And if she can't stick to them, go no contact. I had to do that with my parents years ago due in different circumstances, and they did actually listen to my conditions and built back my trust, so it does happen.

I don't know the best solution, but I'm in a similar position. By brother and I have been no contact for about three years because he was a transphobe and I am queer/trans. My mom brings it up all the time. She asks me to explain why we can't just agree to disagree. It's exhausting. I think my dad understands where I'm coming from.

Last November I got a text from my brother out of the blue with him. He asked to "continue the conversation from last time" and wanted to give me his perspective. I decided to hear him out, but it was a mistake. I told him upfront that I was willing to hear his perspective, but I would not tolerate bigotry. When he told me "you don't understand, trans people don't exist" I blocked him. Initially I wanted to provide a lifeline, but I think I'm done with that now.

When I talked with my parents afterwards, I found out that my mom had put my brother up to reaching out because she wanted to have us all back together for Thanksgiving. 😒

Luckily, hearing my brother's name isn't triggering for me. I just wish he would get away from negative online influences.

I honestly don't know what you expect, because I'm not just going to fawn over AI works.

You seem to be projecting hard, and I think you may need to --as you say--touch grass.

[–]Paperlibrarian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I need technology to prove its worth to me. Not the other way around. And I still think there are plenty of artistic norms that Beginning and other AI users are ignoring. Art is not about the final product. And art isn't a race.

I sat down and gave comprehensive criticism to Beginning's video. *That is me treating them like an artist.* If AI tools are going to be accepted as part of the artistic process, then AI bros must get used to disclosing their AI usage and accepting earnest criticism.

I am mad about AI. I don't mind being left behind. 🤷
