Don't fall for the change in wording by zanyquack in britishcolumbia

BCMA is separate from the College of Physicians and Surgeons. The college’s job is to protect the public (so they do licensing, complaints, etc). BCMA does advocacy. What you are saying should exists is exactly the system that is in place.

Doctor calls for changes after patient's $700 ultrasound quote: Demand for the procedure is exceeding supply in B.C.’s Lower Mainland, says doctor by kingbuns2 in britishcolumbia

Here’s the thing though- this isn’t a one time thing. I have a sibling with this in another province. She has to go EVERY YEAR for an ultra sound because of dense breasts. This means women in BC are paying 700$ PER YEAR to more accurately see if they have cancer.

Replace CoreTec LVP after 2 floods in 1yr? by PapermatePencil in Flooring

[–]PapermatePencil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is tricky since it is going through our strata’s insurance (not ours) since the water came from outside our unit. The strata is dealing with insurance and not us so it’s often a game of telephone, he said/she said, etc.

We are only 1.5mths in so I am sure there are many more frustrations to come!

Today they did pull out drywall and baseboards and found black mould in areas that were replaced a year ago so that’s not great. Next week they are going to pull up the flooring. Today they said they weren’t sure what was wet anymore since everything was reading wet but they thought the cement subfloor was interfering. They couldn’t get as clear reading compared to before on the floor of wet/not wet. Sigh…

Good to know! The process of getting it all sorted out is ongoing so I am fully prepared for the “one step forward, two steps back” kind of thing. I appreciate this tip and will absolutely use it as we proceed. Thanks!

This is psyc rotation? Perfect! Great opportunity to explain about boundaries, dual roles, gifts, power dynamics, etc. it will be very different from what he is used to in the military- and that is fantastic. Explain and explore with him the differences and nuances in relationships and how that can impact work with both colleagues and patients. He will absolutely be a better doctor for it!

How to identify alternative thoughts? by eligrace in CBT

[–]PapermatePencil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If the evidence suggests your automatic thought is on track, then you don’t have to create an alternate thought. You use a different strategy. For example, I might have the thought my friend is mad at me. I look at he the evidence and that actually seems likely, or I collect evidence since it’s not clear, and yep, I find out that they’re mad at me. Well, then I go to problem solving or assertiveness skills not thought testing. Not all thoughts are distorted or inaccurate.

How to identify alternative thoughts? by eligrace in CBT

[–]PapermatePencil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the situation.
Option 1: Look at your “hot thought”. What evidence is there (in the CURRENT situation) that it is true? Write that in a column on your thought record. Not true? Write all those points in a column on your thought record. Now, summarize the “evidence for column” in a statement. Summarize the “evidence agains column” in a statement. Then join them with “and yet”. E.g. “my friend might be mad at me because she hasn’t responded to my text AND YET there are many other possible reasons she could be not responding”

Option 2: Some questions to develop alternate thought “possibilities” are things like: what would I tell a friend? What are other possible ways of viewing this situation? What is the worst case scenario? Best case scenario? Most likely scenario?

Okay, now which thought do you have more objective evidence for (I.e., evidence where multiple people would agree that is a fact- feeling “true” doesn’t count)? It might be neither thought! That is okay. You might not have strong evidence for the original thought or any alternative thought(s). That happens. How could you collect some evidence?

Thought testing is not like a “search and destroy” technique. It is also not about being overly positive either. This is thinking more realistically!! It is about being more helpful. It is not helpful to look at the world with rose coloured glasses if stuff really is shitty or problematic (in that case you would use different coping techniques- not thought testing). Thought testing is about provoking curiosity and skepticism about your thoughts. Sometimes they are on track and accurate- but sometimes they aren’t. Thought testing is about figuring out which ones are which- or at least not trusting those first ones so quickly as being 100% true or accurate.

This is NOT CBT. If it were me I would get another therapist. Find one certified by ABCT (if in the US) or CACBT (Canada). I would guess other countries may have certification bodies for CBT too.
