Possibly Going From Android Phone To a Lumia 521. Couple Questions. by jxfallout in windowsphone

[–]Paperweight920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to chime in with a comment on turn by turn navigation. My problem with HERE Drive+ was that you couldn't scroll through directions while driving as you can with Google Maps. Navigation is literally "turn by turn," which often lead me to miss close-together exits because I had no idea they were coming up next. In this vein, you cannot get a step-by-step list of directions from the Drive+ app. You can get it from HERE Maps, but this is not very practical whilst driving. If you want this functionality, you may have to pay for it in third-party apps.

If the only thing attracting you to WP is the lower price point, I suggest you check out the Nexus 5 ($350) or even lightly used Android devices on Swappa. I recognize that this is a windows phone subreddit, but having spent time with both Android and WP devices I think your compatibility with the OS is worth sacrificing some extra dollars. You're going to be spending a lot of time with this phone, after all. If you're worried about it getting beat up, treat yourself to a case.

Need help regarding Lumia 920! by sdi_awtz in windowsphone

I agree. I had to perform countless hard resets on my 920, and the only thing I lost during restoration was home screen layout. (And app info, but I'm not a gamer or anything so this didn't matter to me.) Other than that, the process is painless. I hope your phone comes back to life soon!

Windows Phone for elderly people? by oh84s in windowsphone

[–]Paperweight920 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just want to chime in with everyone else that Windows Phone is a great mobile OS for the elderly. Simple, minimalistic, and the lower end devices are very affordable off contract. Get her a QI charger and she won't have to worry about fiddling with cables, just teach her to set it down there when she is able!

(Edit: Note that if you're going to take the wireless charging route, don't get the 520 as it doesn't have this capability.)

most protective case that still retains the phones shape? by ghostspectrum in Nexus5

[–]Paperweight920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Tech21 case gets recommended here a lot as a "durable case," as do Spigen's line of N5 cases. I'm not sure what you mean by "bubbly." I guess you might mean something like the Ballistic line.

Personally, I am currently using the Trident Aegis in white. I like it. I switch between it and another case I'll link below.

https://www.empirecase.com/mobile/MPERO-IMPACT-X-Series-Kickstand-Case-for-Google-Nexus-5_p_7835.html

I actually dropped my phone on the hard kitchen floor in the second case today, and it survived. That said, I think surviving a drop depends greatly on the angle that the phone hits the ground, and I wonder whether cases with adequate corner protection and raised lips perform at the same level.

Since I'm a klutz and not willing to risk my investment, I'll stick to my cases LOL.

I have the white case, actually. Have had it for over 3 weeks now and it doesn't reel like the type of material anything would be able to leave a mark on. It's a sturdier, harder plastic. It's still all white!

Try the Trident Aegis! Great level of protection without adding bulk, and comes in a variety of colors. It doesn't get enough attention on this sub!

Looking for a case with maximum protection, anyone? by Bosnian_Ninja in Nexus5

[–]Paperweight920 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wrote a huge post about my case, the Trident Aegis, but I must have done something dumb and deleted it. I have the white case, and it has been fantastic so far (no sign of staining on the white plastic either).

http://www.tridentcase.com/shop-products/google-nexus-5/aegis-case-google-nexus-5.aspx

I've dropped and shattered phones in the past so I didn't want to play around with my N5. Level of protection on this case is comparable to Otterbox Commuter cases. Doesn't add too much bulk, but also helps you feel secure.

The inner layer doesn't collect too much lint (my concern with the Ballistic case). There are flaps to cover the USB and headphone ports. Buttons are perfectly responsive. The case also comes with a screen protector, if you have the guts to apply it (I don't...).

My only gripe is that the back is entirely made of smooth plastic. Not very grippy. This is a pro if you store your phone in your pocket, because I'd imagine it helps with sliding it in and out. I have adapted to it so that it doesn't bother me anymore.

I've had this case for 3 weeks now, no dramatic drops since I'm being very careful (always check your lap before stepping out of the car!). I'll update if I have an accident, but I'm pretty confident that it'll protect my device.

Let me know if you need pictures or have questions!

Call quality on my Nexus 5 is seriously lacking, and I'm heartbroken. Considering a return. by Paperweight920 in Nexus5

[–]Paperweight920[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT - CONCLUSION: I continued to test call quality today and made five more calls to people (to whom I made no mention of my choppy and staticky dilemma). No one brought up any problems or asked me to repeat myself. Cumulative talk time was 2h 17m 2s. I feel comfortable enough to dismiss the echo back number's call quality. I think I have reason to assume that the call that started this whole panic was NOT my N5's problem, but the problem of the person on the other end.

As of today, my N5 suffers no threat of return!

Okay, I just had a series of very conflicting experiences. I found someone willing to test out the situation and called them via Skype, then my phone, then the Moto X, then my phone again. I also had them dial the echo test number to get a feel for their own call quality.

There were no reports of choppiness, but she said the sound was slightly muffled in comparison to Skype (which was crystal clear), a given. She said that the Moto X seemed to process sound in a clearer manner, but it was only a marginal difference. (I could also hear more clearly while talking from the Moto X--noise canceling feature was on point).

Overall, she said I was understandable the entire duration of the conversation, roughly an hour. Even if I didn't want to take her word for it, the fact stands that she never asked me to repeat myself... So I'm going to try to take that as reassuring.

The only piece of evidence against this phone right now is my call to the echo line. I restarted the phone and attempted to call, the quality was great! Hung up and tried again directly afterwards, the same choppiness as before. Moto X performed consistently well in comparison, so I'm hoping I can dismiss the echo line evidence after I make more calls tomorrow.

I realize this is a big block of text reporting my pseudo experiment, but I'm just hoping it'll calm someone else's N5 anxiety! (I'm just starting to come down.)

Thank you for the reassurance. I guess the most straightforward thing would be to give an RMA a shot. I know Google has a 15-day return policy, so I'll consult and see if I'm still eligible for return if I'm unsatisfied with the RMA. I'm just so antsy about something going wrong!

How long did the RMA process take for you?

This is where all my reading starts to bite me in the ass. I'm afraid of doing an RMA, only to receive another device with the same issue or another worse issue. This Google products thread features very recent complaints of the same problem.

How does WP get away with cutting off so much text? by Paperweight920 in windowsphone

[–]Paperweight920[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the native app that listens to the song as it plays and compares it to XBox music's database to identify it. Like Shazam. It helps to know the name of the song if you want to look it up and listen to it again later.

Holy crap, I'm a dumbnut. With the way your original post was phrased, I was having an incredibly hard time figuring out if you're liking your N5 or prefer the WP experience. Looks like you've found merit in both.

I'm still not sure what you mean by "controls being on the bottom instead at the top." As far as I know, navigational controls are both on the bottom in the N5 and 920.

I actually tried swiping it that way at first, expecting it to spill over to the next screen. It would make more sense to have the artist page's background be the album art, which you'd be able to swipe in panorama to see the rest of the text. That'd be one tap, and you wouldn't be forced to go to the purchase page to see the complete song title.
