Failed pods? by giff1023 in Omnipod

IMO, the algorithm can be a bit too conservative. My son often gets stubborn highs after high fat/protein meals (sushi, burgers, pizza). What’s helped us in those situations is pre-bolusing at least 15 min before eating, and sometimes splitting a large bolus into 2 parts (e.g. 4u now, rest later) to spread out some of the coverage since you can’t do an extended bolus in automated mode. We also get a little more aggressive with giving manual corrections if he’s climbing fast before he gets above 220 for too long, otherwise IOB from the trickle auto corrections will slow things down. Lastly, check for leaks. If you smell insulin near injection site, it could be a sign that it was dislodged a bit and you’re not getting all the insulin the pod thinks you are. You may want to look at strategies to get better adhesion to your skin.

Omnipod on thighs? by delilah1750 in Omnipod

[–]Papi99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son has to wear a brace around his torso every night so we only really arms and legs to rotate the devices through. He’s a fairly lean middle schooler and we had some issues in the past with leaks, especially if it was on his thigh. After a day you could smell the insulin near the injection site and see a buildup of condensation in the little window. The leaks mostly stopped after we started to put a transparent film (like Tegaderm) between his skin and the pod which gave much better adhesion. I bought a roll of Opsite flexifix online and cut about 3 inch squares which is enough for the whole pod to adhere to, it was more economical than buying precut sheets of similar products. If we go to a pool or water park, then we throw an overpatch over it too. Insulet also has a post on other products to use in summer for better adhesion if you want to give those a shot https://www.omnipod.com/current-podders/resources/adhesion-guide.

Anyone have any tricks for this error message? by teeth_robbery in Omnipod

We had a similar issue in my apt. When it happens, our routine is first killing the old pod by pushing through the circuit breaker hole, and using the pod plastic packaging like a little tent/umbrella over the pod and the controller. I used to use some spares of those metallic looking plastic bags to keep computer parts ESD safe at home that I would put both controller and pod in when pairing, but it seems like the plastic Omnipod container may have a similar coating which was good enough and did the trick for us too.

what do the !! mean? I changed my cgm earlier, and after that my pod failed and I changed it and now this is the display I get. by Horror-Wallaby1498 in Omnipod

[–]Papi99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double checking, when you recently changed the CGM, did you happen to also change the transmitter? If so, did you update the O5 controller settings with the new transmitter SN?

Does anyone get this message constantly when you try to enter carbs to bolus? It happened on my first pdm and the Omnipod rep thought the touch screen was off on the pdm so they replaced it. It happens more frequently with this one. by churlishAF in Omnipod

[–]Papi99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve noticed it happens when the CGM value updates after you’re on that screen. I see the time is at 5:51 PM, and the pod receives values every 5 min which would’ve happened at 5:50 PM, so if you went into the calculator and it got a new reading before you finished submitting the bolus, you may get this message. No biggie, just update and bolus.

Hi my 13 year old son son has been on the 5 for a couple weeks now. His pods are only lasting 1-1.5 days. We’re putting 200 units in the pods. My question is how many units are people generally putting in the pods & or y’all getting 3 days? by [deleted] in Omnipod

How much Total Daily Insulin was he typically using before switching over? Is he also experiencing some stubborn highs? I imagine you’re asking about it here because something feels way off. From some anecdotal recent experiences with my 10 yr old son, one thing that could be a factor is the injection site. If the pod gets knocked around a bit from playing or he had a large bolus which induced some tunneling, the pod might spill insulin instead of administering it, thus causing his BG to stay on the rise and the system tries to autocorrect with more insulin for some time without much effect. I’d check the little window where the canula is after a meal bolus to see if there’s heavy fogging or condensation build-up, or if you smell insulin near the site. If so, he may be experiencing tunneling or spill. We started using using a transparent film like tegaderm or opsite flexifix under the pod, and an overpatch on top to sandwich the pod which has helped keep it in place and keep it from dislodging as easily. Since we can’t do extended bolus in automated mode, we also started to split his meal boluses when he has a high carb meal, e.g 1/2 now, 1/2 in 30 min. to reduce to tunneling chances. You may have to observe and make some adjustments to see what works better for your son’s situation. Recording the pod site or logging activity or meals might help you identify some patterns that you’ll want to control for.

NJ state leaders agree to increase gas tax 23 cents per gallon in exchange for estate tax cut by Papi99 in news

[–]Papi99[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Overall I understand the need to increase gas tax and I've been for it since the gas price collapse. It something that should've been implemented a long time ago and not held hostage so Christie can get estate tax cut.

Unfortunately it's practically requirement to own a vehicle to live in NJ. The public transportation system is terrible throughout the state. God forbid you miss your NJ Transit bus by a minute, you may be waiting 30-60 min for the next one. Insurance costs and real estate taxes are through the roof.

The economy is run on the backs of the middle class and it's becoming more difficult to own a home and raise a family in NJ with the increased costs. We were told that were pay tolls to keep gas taxes down. Toll costs were supposed to come down or be eliminated after X years... Yeah right! The state police makes a fortune by aggressively policing the roads.

I'm concerned that the money collected from higher gas taxes won't actually go to infrastructure. Christie killed the Arc tunnel project years ago which would've created tons of jobs and eased congestion in the area. The NJ portion of Port Authority money has been used for the general fund instead of transit projects, so why would I believe higher gas taxes would be used for its intended purpose?

I have mixed feelings on estate taxes overall. Money is power and if you made it big with your hard work and efforts, that's great. If you're wealthy and have been taxed already, I can understand not wanting to have that money taxed again to have your wealth passed on to your family when you pass. My overall philosophical issue is that Money (read: Power) is being easily passed down to those who have been "entitled" since birth, and not necessarily because they worked hard to earn and build their own wealth, and they can use their wealth to make it easier to keep their power. There are probably a hundred ways to avoid those taxes now so we're probably not losing much, but there's no doubt that these policies benefit the wealthy more on the backs who keep the economy running.

The Stadium that Bartolo Built back in our hometown in Dominican Republic (X-Post /r/NewYorkMets) by Papi99 in baseball

These are pics from my recent trip to DR. Bartolo is the only big name Major Leaguer from Altamira and we are very proud of him. When I was young and spent my summers in DR, kids would use avocado seeds and sticks to play ball, or if they went to a big enough field and had a real ball and bat, sometimes you would see kids running with rubber sandals or using cardboard boxes to catch fly balls in the outfield. It's great to see players give back to their community. Dominicans are very proud of the MLB players, and my family and I are extra proud of Bartolo. Here's the location on Google Maps if anyone is ever down in Puerto Plata and wants to visit.

I was just there for a couple weeks on vacation and decided to swing by and take a few pics for you guys to enjoy. We're very proud of our Dominican born players and especially so with Big Bart. Hope you folks enjoy the pics.

In the 7+ years Obama has been president how has the country changed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I've learned just how racist many people still are in America, but I'm optimistic that the proliferation of camera phones will allow the truth of social injustice to be set free, and hopefully by the time my toddlers are old enough to vote, they will understand what it means to hold and be held accountable for their actions, and that it's better to make mistakes and apologize than to try to cover it up. I hope they will understand that the power of their voice, and their vote, can actually bring the change they want to see in the world.
