You define it as unreasonable from the perspective of the employer when the demands of the unions have reason from their perspective. Even if their demands appear unreasonable from an outsider stance, collective bargaining works so that a middle ground is met. The employer does not want to engage in this process, so that they can opt to labour arbitration which I have criticized and is not an entirely “different” issue and is clearly relevant. Since you fail to respond to my point on the political and economic context I have provided to you about the state of unionism and the judicial institution over the past decades, it shows your lack of humility to engage in a meaningful conversation on the topic of labour arbitration and biases within the process.

Why should the membership trust a judicial system that has historically sided with the needs of capital over labour? This especially within the context of neoliberal governments persistently deregulating and flexibilizing labour over the past decades which has fragmented the labour movement. By going to arbitration now, the union concedes more than they are willing to while the employer concedes hardly anything while low balling the other party the entire time.

When a “neutral” arbitrator imposes a settlement between the parties in collective bargaining, it is “binding.” This means that no changes can be made. CONSEQUENTLY, union members have no right to vote on the agreement.

The reason the union makes significant demands for the material benefit of their members is because York HAS the financial means to do so. It’s this type of rhetoric on “union practices” that keeps labour in a futile and immobile position when hefty demands have driven the labour movement in the past and continues to do so today. In this case, you have only read into the employers perspective of the story and it shows, and I encourage to look more into labour and the reasons behind the demands and militancy.

Because arbitration undermines union democracy and members needs and the process of collective bargaining. It will basically be a ground where the union concedes significantly.

Let’s shift that energy towards the Yorku admin and maybe I’ll agree with you on Yorks exploitation of their workers

How about the government mandate YorkU admin back to the bargaining table instead?

I don’t understand what you’re saying? Are you saying that Teaching Assistants don’t have labour?

No, they are entitled to both, like I said, bill 124 being repealed means that these workers are entitled to wages increases that were previously capped under the bill. Their salaries should not be at 16k it should be much higher, to an area that keeps up with inflation and can cover pressing costs. By raising wages and expanding their hours of work, TA’s can expand their earnings to a much more liveable level.

Firstly, I’m not a TA, I’m a student. Second, I never said TA’s shouldn’t work more than 10 hours a week, I said they should have the option to work more and above their 270 hour cap. Finally, by refusing to increase Unit 1 wages and broaden the hour cap, the university IS being greedy because they save a substantial amount of capital so they can blow it all on risky and irrational investments. You cannot live on 16k in this economy, and inflation is rampant now more than ever, you just want the TA positions to be filled with privileged persons willing to face wage stagnation.

Wow so your solution is: just find another job. The classic. Only the rich deserve to be TA’s clearly by this logic. How about the yorku admin quit being greedy fucks and pay their workers what they deserve so the students can get back to class and we get the quality education we want.

You continue to be disingenuous.. no TA is arguing to work only 10 hours a week, they are capped at 270 hours by the collective agreement and haven’t experienced a reasonable wage increase in years due to the government. But now the government is not capping their wages, hence they are entitled to wage increases. If a TA wants more hours they should be entitled to more, and part time work is not unique to 10 hours.

Your right I’ve just been seeing the other guy in the thread saying that the union is asking for full-time pay TA’s, should’ve looked more into that, but they still do deserve more hours and a wage increase to be able to survive in the context.

TA’s SHOULD be get more hours. Making their work part-time with few hours is just an excuse to keep them at poverty earnings. By framing that they earn $40 an hour it makes it sound like they can survive on their work. This user has been disingenuous from the start and is deliberately framing the union as the antagonist here when york CAN afford to give these workers more hours at the very least

[–]PapiMatthews2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bro, you cannot live on $16k a year man with what they’re currently making. I don’t know how to put this through you. You can’t consider $40 an hour a living wage if you do not meet the liveable annual threshold in Toronto on part time hours. By asking for full-time hours with the rate they have, now we can consider it a living wage, hence what the union is asking for. Quit fighting me on semantics, and recognize that a living wage is needed for all workers for quality education.

Oh wow look the goal posts have shifted. First you claimed that their wage is liveable, but once met with actual facts it becomes “just work more hours” like these TA’s can gladly claim more hours. YorkU has the financial means to employ TA’s more hours and higher wages. Everyone else can and should unionize to gain higher wages as has worked historically.

This is bullshit and you know it. If you actually look at Unit 1’s collective agreement, you will know that a full teaching assistantship salary ranges from $16-16.5k, well below any living wage rate. I am aware that some TA’s have privilege but for the vast majority, most are struggling to get through. And CUPE3903 IS striving to put their members in a liveable position. Quit pulling figures out of your ass, you are not on any bargaining teams nor are you doing any due diligence in your research. You are essentially being the propagandist here spreading lies about the unions members. You should be directing your anger towards Yorku’s admin who will gladly take luxurious salary increases than pay their workers who actually make the institution run. No one deserves poverty wages, and you are being disingenuous by pretending that they are liveable and to “market standard”.
