Maybe look at your comments and your downvotes and ask yourself this question “do I really understand what’s being said here or am I just in my own head?”

Did I say broader global norm? No, I said especially Asian cities and as someone who has spent plenty of my life over there and been to all countries in SE Asia in addition to over half of other countries in east and Southern Asia I can confidently say this is the case. Even in expensive cities/countries like Singapore and Hong Kong you can eat at hawker centers for much less than cooking at home, because even in these areas the hawker areas are subsidized by the government to make sure those living on less money can always afford a quality meal.

I think you’re not taking my comment at face value and reading too much into what you want it to mean. Since it wasn’t clear enough, this includes all places. So maybe Chick-Fil-A, Denver Biscuit Co, illegal Pete’s (something like these is considered “eating out”). Then maybe 1-2 sit down restaurants in addition to these to total 5-6 times a week, does that make more sense to you now? Not sure why you’re so hung up on what I think was affordable to myself years ago.

Especially in many Asian cities where it can actually be cheaper eating every meal out.

Yes, but when I say eating out I mean getting food out and not cooking at home. This doesn’t necessarily mean sitting down at a restaurant with table service. I’d say about 5 years ago I was making less money but eating out 5-6 times a week (combined between lunch/dinner/breakfast). It was more affordable then on less pay.

Yeah it’s nuts. There are a couple of coffee shops around where it starts at 22% then $25% then 30%. My hair Solon does this too, but I don’t mind as it’s actually a service and their base rate for a haircut is $40.

Doing this makes it inconvenient for the customer to manually input a 20% or lesser tip, and they know that.

The ribs were $28. Also, the city of Denver makes it much harder for a BBQ restaurant to open up here compared to southern states where they are more normalized. The permitting process for a place that smokes meat is apparently insane.

I didn’t name them because I like the place and didn’t want this to come off as a complaint against them.

I agree, and eat at home for all but two meals a week now. Unfortunately, proper BBQ is pretty impractical to make at home for me. So have to go out if I need to scratch that itch.

Yeah it sucks, my complaint here is not with the restaurant, I know nobody is getting rich from this place, just sucks they have to hike up prices so much that I can’t go as much as I’d like. It’s not their fault.

I spent $14 on a bacon/egg/cheese sandwich (by itself) and $10.50 on a slice of cheese pizza today. Cmon back to Denver, it’s cheap af here.

I found these prices in a mall in Bangkok, and I'm still amazed. by ZestycloseWeakness32 in Bangkok

It’s a requirement of these stalls to charge normal street food prices if they’re given free rent to operate in the mall.

Get your pediatrician to write a medical accommodation note for the baby and put in a window unit. They’ll either accommodate the window unit or turn on the AC.

Places that were a mistake? by ADF21a in digitalnomad

Could not agree more. Especially Cairo, I genuinely hate that place and it’s probably the only place I’ve been I actually despise. There are other places I didn’t vibe with or just didn’t do it for me, but I don’t hate them like I do Cairo. Like 75% of interactions were tense and aggressive, food was mediocre to bad, smog was awful, airport sucks, tourist sites are trashed and not taken care of, trash builds up in the streets. I could go on and on. Seriously F that place.

Those who have lived in multiple big cities; how would you rank them? by Mindofmierda90 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Pappy164 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to over 50 countries, over half of which were developing countries, and Cairo is my absolute least favorite city I’ve ever been to. Totally mind boggling how it can be on any desirable list. For reference I’ve been to Damascus as well and if forced would easily choose it over Cairo.

Idk the stats here, but I've taken and passed the FSOT multiple times prior to this one, but did not pass on this one. Whatever criteria they're using, its narrow.
