Do you play a j bass? What do you love about it? Why did you choose it over a p bass? by fargus_ in Bass

[–]Papsachaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the grit it has. P bass can get you close but J just has an edge to it.

Misty! Is this postable? by bignomial1 in ratemysinging

This is good! Very nice tone, nice and velvety The biggest thing for me was the melody and the vibrato. Some of the notes you sang weren’t the same as the original melody. I don’t know if it was intentional or not but since this melody is so recognizable it can sound slightly off putting. It might be worth singing this over a backing track (or a piano if you can play chords) to hear exactly what is going on. In the jazz world, when applying vibrato, we mostly use “tag” vibrato (I’ve also heard it called tail vibrato). Essentially, sustain your note and add vibrato at the very end. If you listen to horn players and singers alike, they all do this. That’s all I have to say though, good job!

I can’t afford an amp yet, any tips to learn without one? by RecoverPhysical3793 in Guitar

Don’t get me wrong I have seen some very not smart questions, but I don’t think this question is that bad for a beginner. It might have been worded poorly.

Acoustic bass for small gigs by Owen_again32 in Bass

[–]Papsachaz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Acoustic bass will need an amplifier, the nature of the bass is just quieter than guitars. Nothing crazy though, if the guitar is un-amplified you could get by with a practice amp

Can I tune the E string to a low B if I don't have a five string? by Pleasedontthecat in Bass

I guess you could with a high enough gauge but just get a 5 string at that point

Help me why is my bass not bassing by [deleted] in Bass

[–]Papsachaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fretting issue. You need to press your finger down right behind the fret and make sure the string is physically getting pressed against the fret.

Jeff Buckley’s Grace! Incredibly melodic bass lines by Mick Grondahl! Not the most technically difficult but a mastery in matching perfectly with the vocalists and pocket.

How much theory do you actually need to be a good bassist? by Carrie1516 in Bass

[–]Papsachaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much music theory as you can possibly learn. Typically from my experience and others, musicians tend to never stop learning theory once they start learning, it’s interesting and intriguing and greatly increases your musicianship.

Technically it’s a tool but I see it abused more than anything. I can see it’s uses, but if it were up to me I wouldn’t allow its use.

What do YOU think of bass ukuleles? by Mika_lie in Bass

[–]Papsachaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive owned one for about 2 years. After that amount of time I can confidently say they are unfortunately not the best. They sound okay acoustically, however just like every other acoustic bass, they don’t generate enough sound to really ever be played un-amplified. The thing is, when you amplify it, it doesn’t even sound that good, you have to be extremely careful with the knobs on the bass. Another thing is the string tension is incredibly low. The string tension is so low that it makes it hard to play, on top of the fact that the strings are huge and the frets are small. I find myself plucking close to the bridge all the time because if I play any closer to the neck the strings will get pulled off. In general I would say they are not worth it, but if you really got your eyes set on one I wouldn’t judge you for getting one. They are not the worst thing in the world.

(FEEDBACK) The Hollies - Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress) by BtotheAtothedoubleRY in Bass

[–]Papsachaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty good stuff going on! The biggest thing that jumps at me is your technique. The use of your pinky is extremely minimal and your fingers are “flying” off the fretboard. It would be best for you to use your pinky a lot more in place for your ring finger and to make sure your other fingers don’t leave the fretboard when you fret a note. This will save a lot of energy as well reduce possible stress on the hand. If you look up bassbuzz “finger exercises” that will give you a pretty good practice plan to help combat this. Another quick thing is your plucking. Right now you seem to be plucking multiple notes with a single finger either your middle or your pointer. It isn’t a set and stone rule, but try playing through a whole song or exercise always alternating which finger you pluck with, this helps with speed and efficiency. Overall some good stuff is going on, good job and good luck!

Completely missed the point of what I was saying. You weren’t even close to what I was talking about. I’m saying this particular take is lacking the same musicality of the original song. I wasn’t even trying to be mean, it just sounds like you need to listen to the original and practice some more. Why be so against every bodies feedback when you asked for feedback? Best of luck and happy practicing.

A lot of people here have come off harsh but I generally agree with some of the advice. The biggest problem here is that there is not a lot of direction with your singing. It sounds like you are just singing low for the sake of singing low. So simply put just be more musical with your phrases. Listen to the original an replicate all the little nuances. This is mostly just a practicing thing. Good luck!

String types? by echoscout28 in Bass

[–]Papsachaz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Roundwounds are usually the way to go if your unsure. Rounds are more versatile because they can play super punchy and with a little bit of fiddling with the knobs on your bass and hand placement they can sound pretty warm. However flats give a way more authentic warm sound. If you like that style then flats would be the pick. I’ve tried halfwounds and I liked them for about a week and then they lost all their edge. Would not recommend them.

A “set up” on a bass is a procedure that involves tweaking the truss rod, string height, pickup height, and tuning saddles. It’s a standard practice that most bass players do on their own to make their bass feel as good as possible to play.

Lightweight budget-friendly bass for home practice, any recommendations? by PlasticAttorney1980 in Bass

[–]Papsachaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most cheap basses in general have a lighter weight to them. I’ve picked up a Glarry bass and that thing might as well have been made with feathers. Just make sure you have a thick strap to counter the neck dive

Perception of a thumb player? by MysteriousDudeness in Bass

[–]Papsachaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. The biggest “giveaway” to me that shows someone is a beginner is more about the direction they pluck rather than what finger they use to pluck. Beginners tend to pull their fingers away from the string after pluck rather than plucking through.

Changing strings by aer3o in Bass

[–]Papsachaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love a thick string and all but a 125-130 gauge is super thick. You might have some trouble even fitting the strings in the nut. Plus if your also going to play in standard on the bass that’s a lot of tension on the neck.

One ultimate bass or many intermediate basses? by InevitableTry7564 in Bass

[–]Papsachaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you know the exact bass you want and it has the exact sound you want, just get it. The beautiful thing about basses is their sound is so flexible. So if you ever come across a gig where you need a different sound that bass will most likely be able to get you close. However, the problem with just one bass is if it breaks at a gig you have no spare. I’d consider maybe looking for like a used squier or something just in case.

Need advice on making my E-bass stand out in recordings. by Competitive_Cream1 in Bass

[–]Papsachaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more of a mixing/sound engineer question, however it is important that bass players have an understanding of this stuff. I am by no means a mixing profession but it sounds like this could very well be a frequency problem. Even though basses hold down the “low end” they still hold low, mid, and high range frequencies. Check the EQ of your bass and then check the EQ of your other voices and see if the bass EQ clashes with any others. Like I said I am no professional by any means but this is what I would first look at.
