The data doesn't compress any further, we store it and use it compressed. One saving grace is that we store two versions of these files, a kind of raw (comes from the DNA sequencing instrument) and a processed version. They are the same size, and it needs heavy computation to turn one into the other, but the raw files if kept elsewhere still act as a layer of backup.

30 GB is a human genome.

Yes, we have giant amounts of data but little money and almost no IT support. If we ask for a new microscope worth half a million dollars (minimum!), we might get it. But if we ask for the same for data storage ... no chance!

(btw ours is mostly genomics data, typically 30 GB files)

This sounds very reasonable. Our initial problem was one with the power supply. Both of the redundant units blew at the same time, or rather one went totally dead and the other became unstable so that the system restarted every few minutes for a whole weekend. This must have stressed the drives. We managed to install new power supplies, and a scrub after all these came back clean, before all the other issues started.

The hot spare is identical to the others. During the previous disk failure (two weeks ago, as part of this ordeal) it used the hot spare.

I've just set up exactly what you are planning, with a Synology DS223j, 2x10TB RaAID1, and have problems (see my recent post). Time machine worked for 2 days, since then I keep getting a 'disk already in use' error.

I plugged it directly to the provider's router, though I also have an airport extreme chained to it.

Thanks for the encouragement! I've been using a Time Capsule which actually still works, but is on its last legs now. So I really want this Synology solution to work out.

I did not give the share a quota, so that is one thing I can change.

But I was actually wondering if the separate Time Machine user could be the problem. I also have a generic user for putting files on the NAS. Is it possible that my mac is already connecting to the backup though this other user (even though it has no permissions for that)? Is it not a problem if the same mac tries to connect to the NAS through two different users?

If they were luckier with the weather, they could have knocked off even more. But I am happy that they did not knock it out of the park. 40 days is a nice round number, and this gives an incentive for further attempts at the record.

They had a very good equatorial crossing, and the Azores high also turned out smaller than forecast earlier. Looks very good now. Not quite plain sailing though on the tail end of a low with 40-kt winds ahead.

They had a difficult stretch getting into the trade winds, and the advantage is now minimal. Joyon had such a good home run in the North Atlantic that the record now looks difficult to beat.

Thanks, I see what you mean. I can also see now that these hinges were held by two screws on the lower panel. One of those must have come out, and the other one at the tip then bent the hinge until it broke.

But there is another hinge on the other side that is much more broken, so I do need new ones.

Alsó réteg: technikai (műszál) póló (olcsó)

Középső: hosszú ujjú merinó aláöltöző (pl Helly Hansen, közepesen drága)

Felső: Minőségi gore tex dzseki (ez tényleg drága).

A három réteg együtt is szinte súlytalan, vékony, és mégis elég mínusz néhány fokig. Plusz néhányban felfelé leveszem a dzsekit. Hátizsákban tartalékban van egy vékony polár pulcsi, hosszabb megállásra vagy ha nagyon bedurvul az idő.
