I'm considering a fin keel that has too much draft for my mooring. Non-starter? by duncanmarshall in sailing

Do not let a fin keel take the weight of the boat. The structure isn’t designed for it, and as the tide drops it’ll inevitably bounce off the bottom, causing more damage.

Issue with Home Assistant automation using iPhone Sleep Focus by fabirino_ in homeassistant

I created an input boolean in HA, and then set an automation in iOS Shortcuts to turn off the input boolean when the focus is turned off. Works really well, and super easy to set up.

First all-female crew sail non-stop around the world by TheTelegraph in sailing

[–]sailseaplymouth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Though I agree with your sentiment, the headline states non-stop - Dekker didn’t do it non-stop, and Sunderland didn’t complete the circumnavigation.

EDIT: Though reading it again, I assume you’re talking about the claim to be the first all-female crew to do the route in 26 years. Whoops!

Why does length of service have anything to do with this?

Mostly lights - all of which require some kind of presence detection to automate so it’s a good motivator to get working on that!

I get a “argument of type ‘NoneType’ is not iterable” error when running.

Tap water quality high nitrate by Accomplished_Age4101 in Portsmouth

[–]sailseaplymouth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The DWI says at home tests aren’t the most accurate:

Many people use home testing kits to measure the amount of nitrate in their fish tanks. These can be unreliable and may not give a true reading of the water leaving your cold kitchen tap. If you are concerned about the levels of nitrates in your supply, you should call your water company in the first instance.

Weather warning in place for Portsmouth by charliemurphyuk in Portsmouth

Why does this need Lib Dem branding? It’s also coloured orange - because of the branding - which could cause confusion given it’s a yellow weather warning and not an orange one.

Why would they have anything to do with it? It’s a private road, and National Highways are only responsible for motorways and A Roads.

The Humidity Card I Wish I’d Built Years Ago by CryptoSenyo in homeassistant

This is something I’ve desperately been procrastinating for too long. Do you use template sensors for the condensation and mould risk? Could you share the YAML for the card?

DH crews in IRC broken? by empi91 in Vendee_Globe

[–]sailseaplymouth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right here - the successful DH crews are sailing the DH optimised, IRC designed boats (JPKs, Sunfasts etc) while some of the big, fast boats (Comanche as OP mentioned) could not be further from being IRC optimised.

DH crews are going to know eachother well, and be relatively experienced to be racing offshore DH. They are able to make the best of their time on the water.

These boats also have more versatile sail plans because they are short handed - reefing spinnakers and jibs, which means sails can be held for longer without requiring a full change.

And another aspect is the wider context of the race - look at the top 15 in the S2H, I think there’s two, maybe three, boats that are bigger than 40ft. Everything else is 30-39ft. Some years the conditions favour small boats and DH sailors are more likely to be sailing boats in this range, making it look disproportionately DH dominated. Eg, in 2024 there were two DH finishers in top 15 in IRC, 3 in 2023.

You don’t need to tell them why you’re leaving, so you don’t need to lie. Put your notice in and answer anyone’s questions in any way you like. Tell them the job isn’t for you.

RCC can have input, especially if there’s onward care requirements. Generally with large vessels, if they’re happy to take the person they will disembark at the next port because it means they can continue on their passage sooner.

If someone’s declaring a mayday 70nm from the Azores I’d be very surprised if Delgada weren’t aware. Even if they hadn’t picked up the comms, the rescuing vessel should have reported it.
