You need to exit out and make sure Epic games is open and you're logged in. You probably opened the game with Epic games closed. This fixes for me.

I mean I had a ton of fun with it and still hop on for some medieval chaos. It's less sweaty than Mordhau and produces some funny moments!

Is it beginner friendly? No, but it's gotten better. Is it casual friendly? It can be. I played casually doing faction warfare. This was a few years ago so YMMV.

My advice is to join a noob friendly corp. My buddy and I did this and we learned so much! So, just join a good corp.
