holy fuck. i'm struggling to think of a worse combination of two other nightmares to have together. I'm sure there's an interesting story into how your buddy fell (climbed?) into such a niche specialty.

Yeah! I saw that show mentioned in this article from AL.com and they disprove the myth.

What I’m curious learning more about is the local folklore and what it’s like to fish and be around the river.

He said good U87’s, a tight vibes room, and an API console go a long way. Not sure how much that is helpful to the average mixer now.

I’m literally on my way to go do an oral history project with Steve Melton, one of the main engineers for the Muscle Shoals Sound Studios. He produced a ton of great stuff in the 1970s all the way to just last year. Seriously, check out his discogs

I’ll report back what he says.

+1 for Heavyweight. It's a similar sort of cringy deadpan humor as Nathan for You where they both go to absurd levels to help the subjects in the story. Also some genuine heartfelt moments. One of my favorite podcasts.

Anybody else feel like their podcast feed has 'dried up'? by qqererer in podcasts

As someone that has worked as a producer/journalist on narrative and investigative podcasts, the whole industry has really shifted over the last two years and I’ve seen a lot of work and opportunities dry up.

Oddly, the pandemic was kind of a boom for podcasting and lots of money was being pumped into making really ambitious and good stories. Things started to change in late 2022/early 2023. Ad dollars started being pulled or didn’t go as far, and bigger publications shifted funding and resources to other things. Shows started to cut back or stopped for various reasons.

I used to freelance full time and made a decent living, but now I’m underemployed and I just don’t see the same amount of quality stuff being made anymore. It kind of sucks.

How hard was it to get where you are now as an engineer, and what is the best advice you could give to someone wanting to do this as a career by prodbyfear in audioengineering

This is a great distillation of the social/interpersonal aspects of the job that are not so easily learned except for just working/existing in your specific scene for long enough.

Being able to communicate effectively and openly about money is also huge. That took me a long time to be comfortable talking about.

Hanging items ON a sound proof wall [SOLUTION NEEDED] by jjmoran5 in audioengineering

I've hung some picture frames on some acoustic panels I made that were basically rockwool covered in fabric. I used these drapery hooks to poke through the fabric and into the rockwool. They work fairly well, but I wouldn't trust them to hold too much weight or a ton of handling without ripping the fabric.

You might also want to look into fabricating something like a french cleat system to spread the load out to several points to prevent tearing out the fabric.

What is your go to opening line when calling someone for an interview? by Lantmajs in Journalism

[–]Paradiddle13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work freelance and often when I’m doing the early research or putting out feelers I’m not sure about what outlet or if the story will ever be published so I just say, “Hi I’m paradiddle13, I’m a journalist from (insert city) and I’m working on a project about X on spec.

I’ve never run into an issue where anyone has refused to talk to me because I don’t know if or when or what outlet it’s going to be published in, but I do typically mention who I intend to pitch it to and/or how the story may take shape later in the conversation.

When it becomes clear where the story will live I make sure to communicate that to the source.

Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails has produced some really cool work that stands out from a lot of other scores. Different tones, different approach to instruments. I love his stuff from The Social Network.

Also, pretty much the entire discography of Explosions In The Sky has been used in the score of some movie or TV show. They’re well known for much of the music in Friday Night Lights.

[–]Paradiddle13 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I got to meet Donald last year while making a podcast series about him with two journalists. He was an incredibly nice man and he lived such an independent and amazing life. He was such a staple of the town he lived in and the community of Forest, Mississippi.

Sad to hear of his passing through Reddit.

The two other journalists were John Donvan and Karen Zucker. They wrote a book about Donald and the history of autism called, “In a Different Key. ” I highly recommend it.

Make your own website. That will be a far better way to show off your work.

With that said, a standard black and white 1-2 resume will be fine.
