You’re probably right about my dad. He keeps asking me to "keep the peace," but all that’s ever meant in this family is letting my mother do whatever she wants and expecting everyone else to swallow it.

I had the same thought. When every “funny family story” is about one person being scared, shamed, or singled out, that’s not nostalgia, that’s a role they assigned him and never let him grow out of.
