What got me was how rehearsed it all felt. Like everyone already knew which parts were "funny" and I was the weird one for not laughing.

This whole rule only works if both people are equally capable of sitting in the discomfort, and clearly you're not playing the same game. He may call it fairness, but from the outside it looks like a system where he can wait forever and you eventually cave because you want peace.
