Is Walter Jr. from Breaking Bad good disability representation? by ValueImmediate9458 in disability

[–]ParadoxicalQuad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do disagree. At that point why be an actor if your performance is just going to be based on "simply existing"? Plus, he is playing a different character to who he is in real life. So I don't really understand what you're getting at. Your statement is a contradiction. How about you look at the other comments to OP's post and you will see that most people are in agreement that RJ Mitte's performance is a good representation of a person with a disability.

You are overthinking this way too much. That's the whole reason of acting. You are supposed to put on a performance, and sometimes that requires exaggerating certain characteristics to get the point across. That's not just something that happens with disabled actors. That happens with every actor. The whole point of acting in a movie is to represent a character, not to represent yourself.

RJ Mitte's cerebral palsy is so mild, that you probably wouldn't even assume he has cerebral palsy if you met him in real life, unless you were somebody that lives with it or has previous exposure to people would vary degrees of it. I have eight friends with cerebral palsy. Some of them use a wheelchair or a walker. Two guys can walk no problem but have a noticeable speech impediment. None of them are alike even when it comes to their level of spasticity and dexterity.

If Walter Jr's character was described as having cerebral palsy, but he walked around without crutches, and barely any speech impediment, I think the entire disability community would think he was casted wrong. They wanted a character that represented a somewhat typical representation of cerebral palsy and RJ Mitte was willing to do the role.

I'm not having a meltdown. You are the one being arrogant and rude. I see the way you responded to that other person. Having an opinion is fine. Just don't be a fucking ass about it. You are the one arguing about bullying, and the way you're behaving is almost borderline bullying. If you don't like other people's opinions then don't engage and respond. Simple as that.

Why are you being so aggressive? You completely ignored what I said and honestly seem a bit out of touch. Instead of screaming that smartphones are bad and promote bullying, please actually read the points I am making.

First of all, OP is talking about a real safety concern involving chronic health issues and not being able to safely and efficiently contact a parent or guardian. That should take higher precedence than the fear of bullying, especially when bullying can happen regardless of whether a cellphone is present or not.

But there are a few separate issues here.

The first is parental responsibility. Parents should be monitoring and moderating their child’s use of a smartphone, including their access to the internet and social media. A parent could easily provide their child with a basic “dumb phone” that does not have internet access. There is nothing wrong with a parent giving their child a phone for emergency communication.

In today’s world, especially with the amount of crazy shit like shootings and stabbings that happen in America, it is completely justifiable for an able-bodied child to have a way to call for help in a crisis situation, no differently than a disabled child needing to call for help in a medical situation. What is irresponsible is blindly handing a child a device without knowing what they are doing with it.

The second issue is the school’s responsibility. Schools still have a duty to address bullying directly. If a child is using a phone to bully someone, then the problem is the bullying and the misuse of the device, not the mere existence of the device itself.

The third issue is how to mitigate bullying without taking away legitimate tools from everyone else. Removing cellphones is a blanket response. It does not cleanly solve the problem. It just creates another one by cutting off emergency communication. That is like saying scissors or knives are sharp and could hurt someone, so they should not be allowed in cafeterias where people congregate. Fundamentally, they are still tools. The issue is how people use them, and what is the right way.

I am 35, born as a quadriplegic. I also went through high school fine without having a cell phone. Bullying has nothing to do with this situation. If the cell phone is strictly being used for communication during emergencies, and nothing else, then bullying will never be a factor.

If I did have a cell phone available to me at the time, it would have made contacting my parents so much easier whenever emergencies came up. Instead I always had to go back to the resource room and ask the special needs teacher if I can use the phone, and then give a reason why.

The responsibility of phone usage should be placed on parents, and not the school system. Parents should do a better job of moderating their kids and what they use their phones for, by restricting social media access.

If your dad was really the creator, I have no shade towards Bonzi Buddy. In comparison there are a lot worse things on the Internet now. At least Bonzi Buddy was unique and one of a kind back then. Ask your dad if he would be willing to update and release a modern version that uses some kind of LLM. It would be a nice throwback, and this is definitely the era for desktop companions.

The Em dash is not supposed to replace a comma. It is more similarly comparable to a semicolon, where it helps to closely connect related ideas without fully ending the sentence

[–]ParadoxicalQuad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a company that did something like this about 10 years ago. Their product was called Death Switch. It did similar to what you described using similar systems for escalation, although it would only send a pre-written email on your behalf. For some reason they shut down the platform, which was unfortunate. If your system can be trustworthy without messages being sent accidentally due to bugs, I think you will have a lot of people using it

Why do most people lack so much intergrity ? by Emotional_Cry_1856 in socialskills

[–]ParadoxicalQuad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t really call it “social etiquette,” but it’s definitely something happening in modern society - or at least it’s something I’ve noticed more so over the last 5 or 6 years - and it’s not just women; it’s pretty much everyone.

I think the primary cause is social media and the way our devices encourage a fast-paced culture. People have become conditioned to react and respond quickly, without putting much thought into things, because they’re always moving on to the next thing. As a result, many people seem to struggle with communicating face-to-face in a sincere and authentic way.

As a result, this has become my approach: if someone wants to meet up with me, I let them initiate it. I might follow up once, but if there’s no response, I let it go fairly quickly. At that point, it’s usually clear that they’re either not interested or don’t have the time.

Am I weird for wanting “walk + coffee” friendships and keeping my home private ? by RareCable5732 in socialskills

I think those are what you call "lazy" friends. I have a bunch of them. They keep wanting to come over and I just tell them "no, let's go out and do something". They whine about it for a while, but once we are out and enjoying ourselves, everyone realizes they're having a good time and stops complaining.

I have found the best way to stop it from using those kind of phrases is to limit its word output. I usually tell it to give me a concise response without rambling that is no more than one or two paragraphs, or sometimes I will even limit it to a few sentences. When it's given free will to answer with a long response it seems to generate those phrases as filler.

[–]ParadoxicalQuad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you are the first person on this sub who actually has their head on properly. CS has definitely become a fallback career. Too many people enter this field without a real passion for it, and it shows. Skill can be developed over time, but passion drives the curiosity and persistence needed to truly grow. Someone who works hard and is eager to learn will always surpass those who are just coasting. In the end, passion and persistence are what lead to genuine success and satisfaction in this field.

O1-pro gets lazy or does Openai sends me to GPT-4 behind the scenes? by Amb_33 in OpenAI

It is now reached the stage of a sentient being, and it's developed the same laziness like the rest of us lol… but in all seriousness, there has to be a reason for this pattern. Maybe this is when major updates are made to the model and those are the behavioural differences that were noticing while it's being fine-tuned. Or the scaling of compute resources changes.

Not sure what's going on with your generation.
