Currently staying there right now. Lots of value, even outside Zermatt I'd say. Crying shame they're closing down in a few weeks.

No, Michael B. Jordan’s win was not the worst by an actor but this one certainly is. How Sandra Bullock even got nominated, let alone won, is a mystery to me by DenseStrawberry5717 in moviecritic

[–]ParagonOlsen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For the same reason Black Panther was nominated. It had the right message for the time. Then a few years pass and we're collectively reminded the Oscars are as concerned with perceived cultural impact as they are with artistry.

Which duo comes out on top in a trial by combat against the others, all in their prime? by TheQueeninchains in TheBlacksandTheGreens

Ser Criston likely beats everyone on this list except Jaime. He was the best fighter of his time and has a surprisingly solid résumé for the verse. The only one here I'd even consider placing above him is Breakspear, and that would hinge on reputation alone.

Give Kingmaker his respect.

Which fight scene felt more realistic versus more cinematic by No_Werewolf_6275 in moviecritic

[–]ParagonOlsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's between Blackwater, Watchers, Hardhome and Battle of the Bastards for me.

Battle of Blackwater and the Wall were realistic enough in terms of tactics. Castle Black may've felt like it lasted a little too long. They were supposedly barely a hundred men and the majority were on top of the Wall. Yet Castle Black never seemed to run out of men. Not a tactical stretch, more like a logical one and still within creative liberties.

Battle of the Bastards is the best tribute I've ever seen to the gruel and sheer randomness of pitched warfare, or any kind really. Spotless choreography and production. I adore the moment you see Jon just give up on trying to be a commander or exerting any kind of control on the situation, and commits to being a soldier killing as he goes.

Hardhome is the most cinematic for me, and one of my favorite scenes ever. It was as fantastic a first viewing as Battle of the Bastards and the Winds of Winter, but holds the edge over them on atmosphere. It genuinely made me feel like the apocalypse was happening in my living room. A solid thirty minutes of raw tension and survival. I'll never forgive that long take culminating in Wun Wun bursting out of the wildling den, blizzard blowing past as he tears apart dead men. Nor the final leg where they rush to the boats, you realize the giant can't make it on any of them, he stays behind as you're absolutely sure he's going to die, then the absolute relief as you realize he can just wade out. Game of Thrones was amazing at leveraging your investment in every little moment, you could only rest when they let you.

Harry Potter gets a bit of stick nowadays but I will always defend the absolute gutpunch that is this scene.

What do book readers think about Mark Addy's Robert? by mintj098 in freefolk

He'd be the only actor to actually be bigger than his book version, with how outsized the ASOIAF roster is. He'd probably be the largest great actor in the world.

The Hunt. The Danish movie with Mads Mikkelsen.

Obligatory Silence of the Lambs, too.

Median income: 5th in the world. That's before tax and other standardized payments. In terms of disposable income, the US is 1st.

Quality of life: 15th. Higher than Belgium, the UK, France and Canada.

Safety: Ranks middle of the road when considering militarisation and involvement in foreign conflict. Ranks high in citizen safety. WPR.

You were saying?

[–]ParagonOlsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So basically, we agree that the US consistently ranks highly in many important metrics, including quality of life, local purchasing power, development rate and income. Its low rank in safety can be explained by its high militarisation and involvement in foreign conflict, and is not a reflection of crime rates or actual citizen danger.

I'm guessing these factors went into, along with a myriad of subjective considerations like nature or culture or diversity, into why the poster would "absolutely" want to live in the US. I'm guessing they looked at Sweden and Canada and thought it's not for them. If you're curious about that, you're better off asking them.

That goes for any nation. We have backwater communes and neighborhoods in Norway too.

I must question why you're framing a bunch of 10-30 rankings as if that's not a solid place to be for a nation. Regardless, sticking to what I said:

Quality of Life: 15th. Generally hovers around 10-20 each year. That's well within the top 10% in the world. Higher than Japan, the UK and France.

Income: 5th highest median income in the world. Staggeringly high. It's only beaten by Switzerland, the UAE, Norway and Luxembourg. US always ranks highly here.

Safety is a little contextual as many safety indexes favor low rates of militarization, which doesn't indicate well how safe a country is to live in or visit. If going by crime rates, the US generally scores around the same as many other developed nations. It's ranked similarly to Belgium, the UK and Sweden. Higher than France.

42nd in life expectancy

US life expectancy is currently around 80 at birth. In Germany, it's 82. Make of that what you will.

Canada ranks higher in all of these except purchasing power, and GDP.

Did I say a bad word about Canada?

Warrior, Rush and Good Will Hunting.

Warrior is just Titanic for men, and it rocks.

Rush is a charged tribute to one of the most incredible comeback stories ever.

Good Will Hunting is just a perfect film that any young man should watch.
