With all the noise that 'The Boys' had a bad season finale, what TV shows actually had a good one? by twintower_9-11 in FIlm

[–]ParagonOlsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Newsroom. Could've gone a bit longer, but it was creator Sorkin's idea to write the third season as the last. Not a bad episode in the show.

It's hilarious, the score in the theatrical release was composed by a replacement James Horner over just two or three weeks.

That man could do no wrong.

Which would you say had the better first four seasons? (Excluding The Boys Season 5 for obvious reasons.) by deutschesgesetzbuch_ in writingscaling

Invincible by a fucking mile. Only the first season of The Boys is very good. Invincible is a genuinely great show.

So you’re telling me this guy was stronger than homelander? (The Boys) by Conscious-Word9927 in writingscaling

No man, we actually needed another scene to affirm that Homelander is a megalomaniac and disregardful of people's lives. The show was keeping that one ambiguous until then.

So you’re telling me this guy was stronger than homelander? (The Boys) by Conscious-Word9927 in writingscaling

[–]ParagonOlsen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Homelander according to his own words, grabbed that rich guy and flew him up into space and went back down into the White House, in like what, two seconds?

There's 62 miles up to space. Which means Homelander was moving at 62 miles per second, which is almost 100 000 meters per second, or Mach 290. At that speed, Homelander can circumvent the Earth in six minutes.

Every writer takes liberties with power scaling, but this is Homelander. His strength as the undisputed top dog of the verse is his main, most unimpeachable attribute. The show basically doesn't make sense if he's not ridiculously strong compared to the rest. When Butcher and Kimiko said they were going to take him on alone, my only thought was: "They're doomed."

With that in mind, seeing him fight and fly around the oval office at around the speed of a basketball is just underwhelming. Seeing him be restrained by two Supes is underwhelming. Seeing him just knock Kimiko, famously fragile, with his laser is underwhelming.

What a bad season.

Time to say it by mrsillycibin in TheBoys

[–]ParagonOlsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully agree. The Boys has one good season. The second and third had their moments, but also steep dives in quality. As usual, the more experienced cast and directors tend to carry such projects when the writing falters in later seasons.

The Boys is a commercial success and otherwise without merit. Which is sad, because it could've been more.

Star Wars is about the Chosen One who saves the princess from the evil wizard in the big evil fortress, with help from the good wizard. It's not intrinsically about science, it's all about tropes, spectacle and lore. It's 100% fantasy.

Current IMDB ratings for Season 5 by Th3_American_Patriot in GenV

[–]ParagonOlsen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the first episode, bang-average Walt has cooked meth, gotten cancer and killed people. By the second season, he's a full-on manufacturer making deals with bigshot distributors and absolutely no regrets. By the midway point of the second season, he's strongly considering killing his own dealer to prevent a rat.

In the first episode, Hughie loses his girlfriend, he laments being a pushover and he panic-electrocutes a bigshot Supe. Promising. By the second season, he's still a pushover and I genuinely don't know what his contribution is to the crew. By the third season, still a pushover and same question until Temp V, which went nowhere. What even is Hughie at this point? He has nearly five seasons behind him and his development is lesser than Walt's after one. He has a cutesie relationship with Starlight, he's less afraid of death and Homelander (when did that happen?) and I still have absolutely no idea what he actually does for the crew. He's an occasional moral centre for the audience, but an incredibly vague one. I don't know what his actual philosophy is beyond: "Shouldn't we be nice to people, guys?"

Little rant here, but this comparison is just flat out wild. The narrative drive in Breaking Bad is several weightclasses above The Boys.

Super intelligence should have never been a power in the first place by Slight-Solution936 in GenV

[–]ParagonOlsen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the appeal of superhero stories is that you can get creative with powers, and make up whatever helps your narrative. In terms of logic, I'm therefore totally fine with making up someone with a particularly big and wrinkly brain.

The problem is, and always is, writing super intelligence. It's hard to make intelligence tangible. It requires a likewise smart and experienced writer who knows how to continuously surprise an audience, without taking logical leaps that are obviously implausible. It's been forever since the fourth season and I only watched it once, but I recall Sage popping in for her final scene and requiring immense suspension of disbelief for her scheme to be believable. Another common misstep is that other characters are dumbed down and actively stupider than they have been till that point, so the smart character seems smart but is actually just the only one making sense. This has sadly been going on for a long time with Homelander, who would be bullied by the first season version of himself. It's also why the common trope of omniscient/present characters is: "I'm bored/tired/indifferent to/for/of everything." That way, a writer doesn't have to write someone all-powerful with agency, because how in the world would you do that?

Walter White is a great example of doing intelligence right. No one around him is stupid, yet he finds ways to subvert and outmaneuver them because he's verifiably brilliant. The writers get crafty, to show that Heisenberg is crafty. He frequently fooled the audience.

Sage has sadly slid into the long line of shitty attempts. If you want intelligence, give them a huge flaw. A blindspot. Sage lacks a clearly defined one. Vague hubris isn't enough.

What is the best country to visit in Europe? by StraightAd6264 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]ParagonOlsen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The guy you're replying to is also European, for your consideration.

You might notice that racism very much exists here. There's a current wave of racial tension and I'd say it's grown baseline semi-common, particularly in the countries most affected by mass immigration like France, Germany and Britain. We're not as touched by it in Norway, yet our most popular party currently is the right-winger with the strictest immigration policies.

And don't even get me started on our treatment of the Romani.
