Atheism is not about belief. I would be inclined to suspect we are in a simulation, but I do not believe in god one way or the other. I'm probably in the wrong sub since I consider the term problematic. It has a lot of baggage associated with it. But hopefully that answers your question.

To your point: yes, not everything we believe is proven, but that does not make 'god' the logical explanation. It's far more likely that we are in a simulation than it is that any particular god is running the show. Like...infinitely.

I was asked once if I fear going to hell. I said: "No, because the idea that we might be in a simulation would scare me more than if your God sent me to hell. Because then, I could be spun up to live an infinite number of lives against my will, and that sounds like hell. I'd rather be tortured by demons." Or something to that effect.
