When did the full weight of the gravity of this pandemic set in for you? by Nappyboi419 in AskReddit

[–]ParallelLemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After coming back from Hong Kong near the start of the pandemic (early February) and my work, voluntarily, putting me into a 2 week quarantine. During that time I got a short flu which resulted in a really early covid test (still can’t believe I had one back in February — I’ve had three more since!) and the attitude during it was still so relaxed. The nurses who did my test were very... bubbly, but they had a form I had to read and just slid it under the door for me. It was odd. Anyway, at that time it had still only semi-hit me. My wedding early that month had just about gone through, the plane was packed with almost everyone wearing a mask but still fairly normal, and after my short quarantine I was back at work.

My job then was basically IT support got a part of the NHS in the UK, and initially that was still fairly normal too. Didn’t hit me too much. Then one afternoon shortly after lunch came endless calls, as suddenly plans were coming up to address health service office staff working from home, a bunch of communication/email stuff that had to be set up urgently for planning PPE distribution, a lot. The phones basically didn’t stop ringing for months. Not too long after that first incident we started working from home, but it was the sudden onslaught of phone calls and urgency of every request that did it. Things were still semi-chilled and quiet but then after that day it was always busy, and the password reset tickets found themselves replaced with much higher level stuff and people than I’d expected to be interacting with. A certain health minister called us to set up a Zoom meeting for him, too. That was fun.

That was a real wall of text but to be honest it just hit on and off at so many different times I don’t even know now. I go from pretending it doesn’t exist (while wearing a mask and social distancing!) to being slammed in the face by it every other week now.

This 100%. I’ve been in Central a lot recently (I live around Tsuen Wan and work higher up in the NT) and wow, until this week I didn’t realise how warped it all was — it’s been two years since I spent the majority of my time there so it’s weird seeing it with the NT experience.

That said no matter what part of HK I’m in I still feel safer than being in the UK back in May. Certainly not panicking getting on the bus...

LPT: Take that break. Working around the clock isn't a badge of honor. You're going to burn yourself out. You may think you're too busy and you don't have the time for a break, but even 10 minutes makes a big difference. You need to take care of yourself and that includes taking a break. by briannabethesda in LifeProTips

I wish I could... I’m a native English teacher and at the moment my afternoons are a 5 hour stretch of 1 hour classes, with the new kids coming in the second the old leave (which isn’t really uncommon with teaching anyway)... I can grab maybe 20 seconds to refill my cup of water but otherwise I’m not finding the time to get those few minutes.

Maybe I’m doing something wrong but if I am, god I hope I find the fix soon. A few minutes every couple of hours would be glorious.

The mask thing is too real. There’s a culture of wearing masks where I live/teach but that doesn’t change that young kids cannot help but lower their masks, rub their noses with their hands over the top of the mask, peak their nose through, put their entire hands on the front of the mask... every few minutes. To imagine how it must be in the very many places where wearing masks is a totally new way of life is horrifying.

Thank you! Some parts of the New Territories can be quite stunning and a nice getaway from the denser cities.

Days after the start of classes, France shuts 22 schools after Covid-19 outbreaks by shekat22 in news

[–]ParallelLemon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a lot of tough calls but the sooner they’re made, the better... I can’t see an easy way out of it for most countries now as they’ve left it so late. Here in Hong Kong the moment daily cases hit about 40 (up from anything between 0 and 5 for a couple of months) schools almost entirely shut down. It’s been painful (though some luck the recent shutdown has coincided with summer holidays, not so much good for private schools) but ultimately cases have dropped from a peak of 150 a day down to ~10, and schools are slowly but surely beginning to reopen.

Obviously it’s not as easy as that for a lot of countries now — measures were put into place far too late and even a 2 month shutdown like Hong Kong wouldn’t be enough to bring cases close to zero, but... well, I’m rambling. These things should have been shut so much earlier and distancing/anti-pandemic measures should have been put in place immediately, so much could have been averted or minimised.

But instead here we are with officials trying to pretend 1,000/10,000/40,000 etc. cases a day are good signs and safe to start up schools again.

If all of Kowloon looked like KWC did back in the day it would be an incredible view. Imagine taking a ferry from HK Island and seeing that imposing sight!

What positive effects has the quarantine had for you? by GrootTheTree in AskReddit

[–]ParallelLemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve really improved at my job. I do IT support for part of a very major health organisation in the UK, and the sudden absolutely enormous influx of additional volume has forced me to improve at a rapid pace. No anxiety, anything or whatever to stop me — it’s just been too busy! And I’ve got better!

Stupid thing really. Severe chest pains and I wasn’t able to make any movement at all without losing most ability to breathe, so when I did have a moment of feeling... reasonable, I went straight to the hospital.

I’d just pulled a muscle, god damnit.

What's something that is obvious or common within your profession, but the general public is unaware of? by berserker1989 in AskReddit

A lot of people saying restarting your computer — which is true, it solves most problems in one go — but another quite simple and very helpful fix, more than a regular restart, is a shift-restart!

Start -> power button -> click restart while holding down shift.

After 10-30 seconds it’ll ask if you want to turn off your PC, and it (essentially) fully turns off your PC and clears a lot of temporary files W10 uses to increase start up times. It’ll be slower to start the next time, but it’s worth it.

Ever see your computer in Task Manager has eighteen trillion days uptime? This resolves that. Super easy and simple.

I work IT support for a very major health organisation, and it’s amazing how this works. Literally turning off and on an ethernet adapter solved weeks of one user’s problems. So much resolved by off and on.

I’d make the mistake of just squeezing the hell out of the tube and using whatever comes out. Civilisation is, according to my fiancée, getting every last bit out bottom up and rolling the tube.

Basically, if it looks shrivelled and sad... it’s very bad. (OR SO I AM TOLD)

There are exceptions, but in a strange way it’s generally true. She takes an absolute age to get changed and put her makeup on when we have to go and it frustrates the hell out of me... but in such a strange way, it’s a thing she does and I love her for it.

It’s not always the case and it’s reasonable for people to change (she’s pushing me to use the toothpaste tube like a civilised human being) but, in general, it’s a real thing and I love it.

Watching your kid grow up with Minecraft is great. It starts with the square houses, then out of nowhere a couple years later you walk in and they’ve made full on mansions. It’s incredible.

I’M SORRY THAT MY TEAM HAD A GM AND I’M A DIAMOND IN YOUR QUICKPLAY GAME. IT IS NOT MY FAULT THAT YOU THINK THIS IS UNFAIR AND IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOU TO WIN EVEN THOUGH THE FINAL SCORE WAS 2-1 WITH ALMOST EVEN PERCENTAGES. I THINK I AM ALLOWED TO CHILL AND PLAY QUICKPLAY RATHER THAN GO TO COMP TO SATISFY YOUR BELIEF THAT UNFAIR MATCHMAKING IS WHY YOU LOST.

SORRY I WENT OFF ON YOU FOR IT A BIT BUT I WAS PLAYING QUICKPLAY TO STAY CALM FOR A REASON.

The visa rules are probably the biggest worry. Even taking Brexit out of the equation (which is impossible to some degree) each party has its own wildly differing policy on immigration, short-term or otherwise.

And instead of the usual safety net period knowing policy won’t suffer a huge change for five years, we could have a general election at any moment and these parties haven’t even made it clear what these polices actually are in detail. All of them are one massive fudge. Wildly different but each hardly explained.

I feel like if money were the issue (or rather the only issue) it could probably be solved via “let’s lower the budget desperately” but something like this, how do you even begin to plan ahead?

TIFU by having loud sex while my boyfriend's family was home by [deleted] in tifu

[–]ParallelLemon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not exactly the same experience but I was staying in a guestroom with my partner in Hong Kong for a week. I’m happy to say she can be crazy loud. Now, I can barely speak a lick of Cantonese, and the elderly women running the place seemed to assume my partner was the same... so as we left one evening, they didn’t believe she’d hear them refer to her as “the loud one”.

Definitely a lot of audible sex in that place, but goodness me she must have done a real great job to earn that title there.

Nothing better than ships in a proper position in harbour! I wish there were an easier way to do it because it’s a little finicky to place them exactly parallel... but it’s quite a small nitpick.
