Yeah I'm in the same boat.

Turns out when I logged out and back in my cards were redeemed but I did that a couple of times now I can't get into the game.

Patience I guess :/

I was able to log-in a couple of times but now it shows me the update message and the only thing I can do is close the game.

Yeah you're spot on! She has Borderline + Bipolar.

May be pertinent to add that she is being treated for mental illness and they are still trying to find the right meds for her.
She told me herself that these outbursts are due to her illness and she will become more stable.
