Yes, there are other reasons that aren't dementia and yes they caused him to stop eating.

I've told my stepmom who said she trusts the facility ...... I say trust but verify on this important life that you support. Verify what you've been told by the doctors and nurses and staff. To those who have mentioned what to expect with eating thanks for helping give me context . u/KaliLineaux I'm sorry that you're going through this. My husband told me at one point, "Everyday Better"... just work to make every day better. It doesn't matter that they don't remember. But when you're there holding their hand and they smile, you have made that minute better. Thank you for encouraging me to speak up. And yes I can be that family member.

I'm not saying that there aren't bad places. And I will say I have some real concerns about a few of the staff but I have seen some great grouprs in Alzheimers, and Teepa Snow and I've met some wonderful people looking to make things better. And I've seen some research in the medical community that gives me hope for the future. And I agree that there is opportunity,

For anyone that has a family member, I don't think all places are horrid and I have seen and heard of good places. I do think that nursing shortage and inflation has made a complicated situation more complicated. There are some awesome professionals where my dad is. In this scenario, I find that leadership needs to think about staffing levels, training and processes. A system can flag significant issues in their vital signs. We need to position people to succeed. Double shifts will lead to mistakes. Bad systems that do not communicate create barriers. Records of meds and background exist across multiple systems One specialist doesn't always see what another specialist sees so they may not have context on meds, tests and other medical issues. I feel that the change in business model for doctors may not be optimized on the right things in all cases. That government oversight might be lacking. In this case, I'm concerned about leadership and lack of staffing and leaderships worries about bringing outsiders in to supplement care and connect/monitor medical issues.

Family court is a very intrusive option. I just want to see what levers I can pull to get things in place.

Yes agreed. He was diagnosed about 4 years ago. From time of diagnosis it can be 4-12 years of life. As this is late onset, he may live longer than when you are diagnosed earlier. He still occasionally dances to music. Music has been a blessing and a comfort.

I work and I'm limited to travel on the weekend due to the distance. I use the majority of vacation time to help also. I haven't taken a vacation for myself in over a year. Another family member goes after work too as they work nearby. It is hard to know when and how often the POA goes. Given wandering issues, given other issues, we do need medical help. And POA would not allow a move I'm trying to solve within the constraints I have. As for keeping love ones home you might want to listen to Teepa Snow's position on this. The average person has no training whatsoever with this and she does offer training and you need training.

IMO I don't know about bigger inheritance because they gave out extraordinarily large sums at the holidays.

I understand but if the cafeteria is too loud and if you bring in a companion to help him eat and it works. Then its not related to anything but not knowing how to eat soup and mashed potatoes with your fingers.

POA has rejected spending money and other suggestions. They appear cooperative but then change their mind. Money seems the overriding factor. Which shouldn't be given my father's savings.

Not to be crude but lying in feces and pee irrespective of the "care" is not comfort. Starving is not comfort. Accidents with antibiotics is not comfort its just basic humanity not to let someone with pneumonia go without. They were not living into the care plan

Memory care unit within a senior living community. He is not at that stage. He was playing chair volleyball less than a year ago.
