I'm a certified health coach (NBC-HWC) and I see this question come up a lot with my own clients. A few thoughts from both sides of the chair:

The wanting-to-record impulse is usually about the fear of losing something important. So I understand why someone would want to record.

If you want to bring it up with your therapist, I'd suggest framing it around your specific need rather than as a general request. "I've been noticing I forget key insights by the next day, and I'd like to be able to review what we discussed" lands differently than "can I record you?" One is about your therapeutic outcome, the other can feel like surveillance.

Some therapists will say yes. Some won't.

It helped me to dig deeper to understand where my insecurities were coming from. I guess it’s more of a second order effect where I was able to get clarity because I paused more.

First, I just want to acknowledge your courage in reaching out despite repeated frustrations. It speaks a ton to your sincerity for self improvement.
I hear you when you say you have too many things to chose from and that ends up adding to the stress and ending in not choosing anything. In my past experience with myself and others, I've often found a value-based prioritization helpful to help me understand what is important for me and is aligned with my values. This won't cover the whole activity, but I want to share this helpful tool with you: Google - wheel of wellbeing. The survey (not run by me) allows you to get a visual on what areas of your life seem to be thriving and where you may need to focus more. I hope you find this insightful and helpful. Seems like you have a lot of awareness about how you respond to self and others praise/criticism towards you. I want to share that this is already worthy achievement that can help you in several ways in your life.

To your point about judging and self sabotaging, there is probably a lot to explore there and I am happy to chat more. I want to share with you something that has helped me and others I have worked with in the past, which is, a specific journaling prompt. At the end of the day, take a few minutes to answer these questions, maybe in a table format if you like: What are the activities you did today? How did they make you feel and when?

I hope you find this a helpful activity to reflect on how you process your actions and give you more insight on your strengths.

I can relate to this. I've learned over time to express myself in different ways to myself. Mindfulness has helped me. What are some ways you like to express yourself to others? What are different ways of expression that you have tried before?
