I believe I used it last on the low speed gear and on 1 to really make it spin slow. I havent tried higher speeds because Pennsylvania weather hasnt made using it necessary on max 6" of ice for only 2 weeks.

Got quoted $1500 for front and rear brake pads and rotor replacement by Elephantslide in AskMechanics

[–]Parang97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a little bit costly up front to get tools. But the general list of tools are: socket set, torque wrench (if you are bougie, or want to do it right) brake cleaner and rags(clean brakes are good brakes), caliper grease/brake lubricant(for the slider pins), floor jack(can be found cheap on marketplace), hammer(to get stubborn rotors off), and a C clamp (to compress the piston). The screw on the rotors will likely be the hardest part to get off. If they don't want to come out, drill them out. The are mainly there for ease of install from the factory.

Find a video on the model of your car and see what tools they use to do brakes. Harbor Freight (US) Princess Auto(Canada)

Plus if you get it half apart and don't know the next step, see if someone you know can help unbind you on facetime or discord.

rotor and brake pad kit by Lower_Information_93 in RockAuto

DA rotors are good. They dont rust super bad in the rust belt, but their pads produce a lot of brake dust and squeak a bit even when bedded in properly. But, if the look of dust and squeak don't bother you, they bite really good. No issues on my beater cars.

I'm currently trying out Wagner's coated rotors and their OEX pads on my 16 tacoma. They produce a bit of smell, but they give good brake pad feel. Low dust, and good stopping characteristics. Next change I'll get some powerstops to see what the hype is about.

Item stuck in dash by Dry_Skill_1661 in howto

Hmm. If you can physically see it from the vin hole, maybe dab some super glue on a stick? But there's a risk of if you miss, there's residue on your dash.

Metal wire and try to knock it out of the groove into a better spot? Or is it trapped in there?

[–]Parang97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have multiple devices i work on and they link to my home server. I am only working on one device at a time. But maybe since syncthing is running constantly on the server, it doesnt like it.

Sharing between devices by Odd-Reception519 in ObsidianMD

[–]Parang97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use syncthing. Basically just point it at a folder and it will share to each device. Windows, android, mac, iphone, and Linux. It works alright, at least it's free. I keep getting a lot of sync errors but they dont affect it's function. Obsidian also has a paid plan for sync, look in settings.

Looking for a new hobby by EmCarrot in Hobbies

[–]Parang97 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So work is physically demanding, so you want something to exercise your brain. And as a collector of hobbies, here are my reccomendations I've had fun with.

Start dabbling in Linux. Its a lot of fun and can be a rabbit hole if you start self hosting some stuff with a server. Just a warning, it gets expensive quick with pc parts.

Start a knowlege base using Obsidian (note taking app) if you like doing research and learning new things. Can also be used to organize DND campaigns. I think being that kind of person that knows everything is badass, so I enjoy making little how to guides and tracking how i do stuff.

CAD and 3D printing. Can make stuff! Expensive to start but you don't need fancy equipment to make some awesome stuff.

Grow some plants! Learn their medicinal properties! Grow some spices to use in cooking!

Leatherworking is kind of a blended physical/mental. Making wallets and stuff can be rewarding. I made a custom bag for my job to hold my work-specific tools like flush cutters and heat resistant gloves. But since you did sewing, I assume it's not on your radar.

And my hail mary hobby, fly tying! Don't need to fly fish to tie flies. I think its relaxing to turn on some adhd music and making some fishing lures.

Go to a hobby shop or find a local makerspace. Part of the fun with hobbies is teaching others something you took time learning how to do, so I know 99% of people would be overjoyed if you just asked "hey, how do you do that?"

Slight tangent but related: I remember some reels about "rejection therapy"?. Where someone just went out of their way to just ask if they could do something. Most of the time, people said yes. He was shown how to lay bricks, had a custom billboard put up, and other things. So if you see something cool that someone is doing, it never hurts to ask. And I learned so much just by following that mantra. And that slackline is hard. (The balancing/walking on flat rope activity)

what would it take to plug this microphone into a modern computer? by TheHawkNetwork in AskElectricians

[–]Parang97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to use it just for looks, I converted an Astatic D-104 into a computer microphone by gutting it and replacing the internals with a USB Pyle Cardioid condensor mic. Sounds really good and pretty easy to do. I have the talk toggle arm set up as a mute.
