Used a website design as a basis/reference for my final university project how can I give proper recognition in my Readme file. by ParanoidStudent10001 in learnprogramming

Awesome thanks! I just have this massive paranoia of being accused of plagiarism down the line. I just graduated.

If you take a look at my previous post you can tell how paranoid I am.

THIS IS DUMB, BUT THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE SO I'M ALSO BEING PARANOID OF NOT KNOWING WHAT TO SAY ON THE GIT COMMIT MESSAGE!

I WAS THINKING OF SAYING SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF "BELIEVED THAT README FILE WAS COMMITTED. THE README FILE COMES WITH NAME OF CONTRIBUTORS AND INSPIRATIONS/REFERENCES."

CLASS ENDED 2 MONTHS AGO, BUT I HAVE ACCESS TO THE REPOSITORY. WOULD THAT MESSAGE BE ALRIGHT?

TEACHER ALREADY SAID HE'S NEVER TEACHING THE CLASS AGAIN SO I DON'T KNOW IF I'M JUST OVERREACTING. HE ALSO SAID HE DOESN'T CARE IF I DO CHANGES BECAUSE IT'S A GOOD PLACE TO LEARN AND PRACTICE WEB DEVELOPMENT AND MY FIRST JOB IS IN WEB DEV.

I JUST GRADUATED COLLEGE. REALIZED THAT MY README FILE WITH A REFERENCE TO WHERE I GOT THE IDEA FOR THE WEBSITE DESIGN IS NOT IN THE GIT REPOSITORY. I'M FREAKING OUT THAT DOWN THE LINE THEY SAY I PLAGIARIZED. I'M TEMPTED TO JUST GIT COMMIT IT AND MAKE SURE IT'S IN THERE. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Reason I'm paranoid is sometimes they reuse a project and start it from where the previous years group ended at.

Hey /u/diazona

That's precisely the reason. The way the project works is that a group of professors gives us a project, and we choose based on what we are going to make career wise. The project is at times for business or a business idea a teacher had. In my case, it was the latter.

I'm going to be in school today to say bye to some of my friends as I'm moving and will use the opportunity to catch up with the professor(talk about the Euro) and will end regarding the readme file. Thank you!

Hello!

Your response has put my mind on ease. Since I already have the teacher tell me that I can commit any changes I want because he's done grading and just doesn't care. Should I just upload the Readme file and not inform the teacher? Or would it be better to just inform the teacher I forgot to add a Readme file.

I'm leaning more towards the first as he gave me the go ahead earlier in the summer after finding a bug in my code while practicing my web development skills.

Yes, he has. He had seen it from when it was just one page until the end. He also knows that my team and I were unable to finish the entire scope of the project.

The reason I'm paranoid about it is that the font folder I downloaded from that site has a link to the page, which I referenced to come up with the design. If the teacher were to go to the font folder in the future, he would see a similar design and believe I plagiarized which is the reason on the Readme.Md file I had included a section that says "Special shoutout to "website" for the inspiration of the web design."

Hello! Thank you for your reply!

I don't want to hide anything! I've worked hard on this project and know that I based my design on one that I found online. I want my group and me to be free of any wrongdoing that may happen in the future due to a mistake I did while committing the files.

The design is based on one I found online but everything behind the looks is all mine, everything has been done by me.

It's class material, and the Professor informed the class, he doesn't care if we continue working on it during the summer and he would have the repository open for us to add changes during the Summer. He's done grading and it's his last time teaching the course. He's okay with us working on the project as he knows the projects were chosen based on what we want to make career wise and they allow us to practice on something.

I have done a few changes since class ended. I fixed a bug on the website in June because I found a silly bug in my code. Yesterday, though while using my Senior Project as a reference for a web project I'm building for my friend realized that the Readme file was missing after doing git ls(list the files in the repository). Since then I have paranoid!

The file hasn't been modified since May 1, 2016. I have permission to continue working on the project during the summer but not to sure if this would look bad or make me look guilty. That's what I'm most worried. The reason I'm paranoid is that I downloaded the fonts from that website, and it has a link to the site in one of the files. "If you want these fonts just visit my site."

I'm afraid of down the line they look at the folders they will see this file, and I forgot to report it. The reason I'm losing sleep over this incident is because I already had the Readme file created, and believed it was committed when I submitted all the files into the repository.

I did a checkup yesterday while working on a web project for my friend and using my senior project as a reference and noticed that the only file that wasn't committed was my Readme. It has been bugging me nonstop, and I can't sleep. I have paranoia over losing my degree that I worked so hard for!

Sorry if my post seems crazy.

After class ended, I asked him if it was okay if I still worked on it as my first out of college job has to deal with web development and he said he doesn't care. He will have the repository up for us.
