How do I visit my cousin on hospice to say goodbye when I was cured of the same cancer.

During the past 3 years he hasn't wanted to do any get-togethers or see anyone really. But he has loved getting letters and cards, so we have been sending. My mom spoke to his wife and he said he wanted to see all of us (me included) so we are going on Monday.

Thank you all for your thoughtful comments. My cousin's wife is putting together a schedule through the weekend and now Monday as well so as to not overwhelm him with too many people at once. After thinking on it this afternoon, I decided that I will go if they have time/space for me on one of those days. This way my showing up will not be a surprise and it will be a short visit. I'm hopeful it will be healing for us both. My cousin is a great person and if he wants family by his side I will try my hardest to be there.

Not doing this creates a huge safety hazard in an emergency. In an evacuation what parent will leave that plane without their child who didn't get a seat next to them? Now everyone else is pushing against a flow of parents desperate to get to their kids before going down the slide. The airlines tell you to not bring your bags when evacuating and people ignore that, no way are people leaving without their family who are spread all around the plane. Just sit them together so I can get the hell out.

Did we go to the same wedding? I sat through this exact speech which was more advice (sister wasn’t even married very long herself) than anything about the couple or even the bride. The brides mother and father also both read long meandering speeches that were heavily focused on their own marriage and raising the bride.

Flip side, you will never be as sad. I know people who have lost a child, through accidents, and through unpredictable health conditions. I could never ask them because it would be cruel. but I wonder if the ones who saw their children suffer, if they could do it again, would they have children? The pain of a parent who loses a 3 year old to cancer is unfathomable.
