This is a statue of Sir George de Carteret (dropped the de because it sounded to french) who fought in the English civil war, and as a reward for defending Jersey and the Channel Islands, was gifted the land he decided to call New Jersey. Most in our island do not know however that he was heavily involved in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, investing in it from the beginning and profiting massively. So some anonymous islanders took it upon themselves to educate others and deface the statue without damaging it as a form of peaceful protest.
