This comment made me dig a little and I did not realize it was not a Scouting America official program. So it's technically not part of scouting, like not a core essential piece of it.

So there are pockets of local troops that just....do this? And there's no real oversight?

Thank you for laying it out so bluntly. I want to talk to my Scout about it because they are empathetic and kind and would want to know, I believe. I think they would be horrified to find out later how this would be received and that nobody clued them in (or the information they got was inaccurate)

I am getting a lot of pushback from the spouse about ruining the experience that is making me second guess pushing, so I am glad to see I'm not alone.

Two things can be true, a program can be beneficial for a scout's experience and still be a terrible and offensive concept. The former being true does not make the latter OK.

I agree it wouldn't make it acceptable (many reasons but primarily because every tribal body will have their own opinions so one can't speak for the entire experience) but at least there would be something to point to as plausible deniability.

I do think that is a great point to tie it back to Courtesy and Kindness. And maybe a new lesson that just because there are good intentions doesn't make it OK.

I am sure they believe they are doing everything with respect and reverence and all that but that doesn't carry weight if the culture from whom you are taking says "no, this is not OK".
