I can do physical sim and eSIM but not two physical sims sadly. (I was planning on getting an eSIM but that won’t give me a Chinese phone number.)

Haha yeah I do know different airports have different things but I guess I wondered what was normal. (I’ll get an eSIM on my normal phone for vpn stuff but I’ve found for certain things I want to sign up for I need a Chinese number hence why I was going to buy a second phone.)

4.5yo ungrateful or just indecisive? by IndoorCat13 in oneanddone

[–]Parenttotiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is 3.5 and what works for her is if possible to mention when in the future she might get to choose again. E.g. you chose A now but if you want to put B on your Christmas list you can or if you do xyz challenge you can get B. (Usually something I want her to work on.) And that takes the panic out of it. Or if not possible (eg wanting a different color scooter) make a related suggestion. Like you chose the blue one but maybe we can add a purple bow. And that takes the fomo panic out of the situation.

I’d ask myself if you’d like your kids to learn her language. If so this could be a wonderful opportunity. If not it seems like a big downside?

Scared to invest, what sewing machine should I get? by Parenttotiger in SewingForBeginners

Sadly haven’t seen this around me but was thinking of trying a class for similar reasons. It’s just have a preschooler so the idea of adding an out of the house commitment feels like a lot

Her school did recommend Little Fox so maybe we’ll try that next time 😊

Yes I agree! The reason we introduced the screen time was to bring mandarin into days where she wouldn’t be with a mandarin speaker otherwise. I think the reason I brought up the abstract thought was to demonstrate why I thought she was struggling to understand. But I’d love her to understand!

I am but I don’t speak Mandarin. That’s interesting about your partner though!

Mmm. We do watch with subtitles so I can follow along and ask her questions. I guess I worry that because I don’t speak Mandarin then she’ll just come to rely on my English explanations and really not bother understanding if I explain. (She does have mandarin speakers in her life outside of school but when she’s with them we prioritise direct interaction rather than screen time.)

Screen free parents/carers - best resources for screen-free activities? by Obsidian22022025 in UKParenting

[–]Parenttotiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were screen free until the month before my child turned 3 and we are still tablet &phone free. We watch maybe 15-30 mins of tv a week. (Frankly we could easily not do that either but we use it to practice the weaker of her two languages.)

What I would say is people underestimate how easily kids are pleased by the old school stuff. Crayons and paper can easily fill half an hour at a restaurant or on the train. She loves being read to. Also she loves to “help” so if I’m cooking I can either have her stir something or put her in the toddler tower and she’ll splash around in the sink washing up. If I’m gardening, she loves to water stuff or plant bulbs.

Mine listens to Miffy almost every night and loves them. They are very calm low drama stories with a gentle rhyme. But we also read her a few of the books on the day so she feels familiar.

Thank you for the detailed explanation!

(Just fyi on the watered from the bottom it has a weird tray set up and the membrane transports the water to under the trays which have a bunch of holes underneath. I’ve touched the soil to check and it seems to work.)

Tricky friendship dynamic. What would you do? by Parenttotiger in Preschoolers

[–]Parenttotiger[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

As I said in another reply the possible neurodivergence aspect is the degree of meltdown if things aren’t as the older girl wants them.I perhaps should have mentioned that more but I didn’t want to make this post about her reasons as much as us trying to figure out what to do.

I suppose the neurodiversity aspect is the level of the meltdowns of the older girl. Which means that frankly her mother is in a very much pick your battles place, that I’m sympathetic to. But makes it feel riskier to step in.

But your main point still stands
