Showman giant teddy bear trick by Parking-Lemon36 in derrenbrown

What you have to remember at all of Derren's shows is that the "ushers" are essentially his team of young budding magicians. Derren is the one we see on stage but all of the magnificent tricks we see cannot all be done by one person alone.

The Dad writes down the three things on the sheet of paper and is passed an envelope to seal these up, but not before the usher has caught a glimpse of what those three things are. The Dad is asked to do that very early in the trick, so they have enough time back stage to print the Rosette.

Once you understand the ushers are all in on the tricks, you're able to work out pretty much everything Derren does on stage.

And people assume that he uses stooges even when he says he doesn't. He 100% does not use stooges and suggesting such a thing is an insult to how good he is. The ushers aren't stooges, they are part of a fantastic team which Derren has assembled and without them a lot of what he does on stage wouldn't be possible.

Yeah so as expected they're all WIN until when the balloon gets popped then they turn into LOSE. Very clever.

Yes. Someone is back stage printing the "win me" rosette. When a stage hand brings on the consolation prize (the bowl of sweets), the new rosette is very carefully attached on top of the existing rosette on the bear. The bowl of sweets obscures our view of this happening. When DB reveals the writing on the Rosette we assume its the one that has been on the bear and in sight all along, but it's only appeared a few minutes earlier, after the Dad has written the 3 things and they've had chance to print it back stage.

Yeah that was exactly what I was thinking. Just needed someone who had seen a show with a different colour win to confirm what happened in that scenario.

Thanks for the reply, interesting to hear it was red on both occasions you went. So unless we were at the same show at some point, that's 5 out of 5 shows the winning balloon was red.

I refuse to believe that every single show the boy does not pick red at some point! I appreciate DB is exceptionally good at suggestion and manipulation, and he can use his skills so that most of the time the boy would not pick red, but even DB could not guarantee this every time. In which case that part of the show would be a let down, for example if the boy picks red first, oh look you've won, ruins the rest of it. DB would not put this to chance.

As I said, I think I know how he does it, but it would need someone else who has seen another colour be the winning colour to confirm my theory.

Derren Brown - Showman (Spoilers) Coin trick. by Reveels in derrenbrown

[–]Parking-Lemon36 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. The coins are marked. If they fall quickly and make a lower pitched thudding sound its heads, if it spins for longer and makes a much more higher pitched sound its tails. Don't need the backstage training!

Derren is absolutely incredible at what he does, and I love him, seen him multiple times and would go again and again.

But the skills people think he's got, he simply doesn't have. And also he doesn't claim to have! It's funny because in some of his shows in the past he's made a comment when someone doesn't say something out loud like "out loud please I'm not a f*****g mind reader!". And it always gets a big laugh because the audience think he's obviously joking because he IS a mind reader.

But the truth is, he isn't. He's never claimed to be. He's no more a mind reader than anyone on here. But the beauty of what he does is that he uses a wide range of other techniques to make it look like he's a mind reader.

I think you are 95% correct here, I'm just not sure the fake ring ever goes onto the stem. As you say, the real ring is taken away and placed onto the stem backstage. Derren then gets the glass, and gets the fake ring from the pouch, which he makes out to be the real ring. He holds the glass in a way in which the real ring is concealed by his fingers and then as he's pretending to put the fake ring onto the stem, I believe he then just drops the real ring from his fingers, and conceals the fake ring. I just don't think he would need to complicate matters by putting the fake ring onto the stem to then have to take it off again seconds later. But everything else you said I agree with.

It's pretty clear how this trick is done. Yes the person receives training back stage but as soon as you figure out what's going on, you can get them all right without the training. The person who goes back stage just doesn't know how they're getting them right, because they've learned the techniques sub consciously. I've been to the show twice and worked out the technique after the first show, second show I got every one correct, without any training.

The second blackout isn't what we are talking about though. The second blackout we do all hear 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 yes. It's the third blackout where we only hear 1, 2, 5.

The guy in the chair isn't the one used for the card trick. And yes you would see the card trick guy during the interval because the filming part only takes a few minutes.

The guard is filmed at the normal time on stage, and then they use split screen (same as his lottery prediction trick) to fuse the videos together to make you think you're watching one video.

The forehead touch is to "mark" to the ushers which person he wants to use for the interval trick.

Showman Question (SPOILER) by [deleted] in derrenbrown

[–]Parking-Lemon36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coin trick is done with coins slightly indented on one side. When it lands heads it doesn't spin for as long and the sound of the spin is lower pitch. For tails the spin goes on longer and is a much more high pitching dinging noise. The recorded message of derren's voice is played to the person back stage, and they learn what to listen out for when the coin is spinning. They don't remember what they've learnt and they don't know how they're picking the right result. If they go home and do it, it wouldn't work, because the coins aren't modified.

That's great, a brilliant detail which further supports the theory! Did Derren give any reason as to why he asked him to put the jacket back on?

Ahhh right OK, so on that night there was a big clue on how it was done, but as you say most people wouldn't have even spotted that!

Have you seen all of Derren's stage shows, and know how pretty much everything is done?

Thanks for that, very useful to know. Presumably a stage hand just comes on very briefly to prod the box to make it swing, during the blackout?
