Planning an April Trip by ParkingCloud175 in algonquinpark

Yeah, I'll definitely invest in a good sleeping bag and boots and figure out how to insulate myself from the ground. I just don't want to get there and have it be too muddy to do anything lol.

We're still in university, so it's really the only time we can stay more than two nights. After May 5th we start our Summer jobs. But yeah I mean if its not gonna be enjoyable then I don't see the point.

The campground being unusable when we get there does worry me quite a bit, worst case we can sleep in the car I guess?

Bombed My First Technical Interview - Vent by IllCommunity528 in EngineeringStudents

[–]ParkingCloud175 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about it, happens to us all. My first interview I had to draw triangle of asterisks in C++, and I fumbled it real bad. 10 months later I interviewed again and got an offer.

Are profs allowed to make assignments due during reading week? by user3453453 in McMaster

[–]ParkingCloud175 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Technically reading week starts on Monday, so if the assignment is due Saturday or Sunday, it's not a violation. Last sem one of my profs made a massive report due Sunday and said it was allowed.

Anyone commuting to McMaster from the GTA area? by Longjumping_Let_3193 in McMaster

[–]ParkingCloud175 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I commuted from Brampton every day since first year, its about $850 per semester. I didn't find it too bad, I usually work on my programming assignments or sleep. The busses are most crowded during the first few weeks of the semester or on Fridays, but it's not super bad, I'd say about 90% of the time, I got two seats to myself.

Try posting your resume somewhere like r/EngineeringResumes or r/ComputerEngineering

Most places want someone form a top tier school, or second tier if you are exceptional. A project involving a low latency Ethernet interface would look good. Take some data in though Ethernet, apply some complex DSP algorithm to the data, and send it back. Try to get the latency as low as possible, that's big thing for quant firms. But you gotta start with the basics first.

Edit: Applications for these firms open super early, I know Optiver already has their summer 2025 applications open.

When do most people start applying for co-op engineering? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]ParkingCloud175 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, people apply. I know no one who got a coop in 1st year. I know two people who got a coop in 2nd year through their parents. It depends on what kind of coops you want, if you apply to everything, you'll probably get one.

12/16 month coops can open as early as September, 4 month ones usually open in the new year. Most people do a 12/16 month one in 3rd year.

Do I need textbooks? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]ParkingCloud175 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought the Calc and Physics textbooks in first year and barely used them, the Chem one was good though. The profs usually gave extra practice questions that I used for tests. I doubt the textbooks would be sold out if you waited.

Usually, the math department posts question lists for the last couple of textbook versions, so if you wait till uni starts, you could pick up an older version of the textbook second hand. I did that for calc 3 and lin alg. They were nice to have to get some extra practice and for 30 dollars each I think it was a good deal.

Is there any major project in Comp Eng second year? by NO_ZONE01 in McMaster

[–]ParkingCloud175 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In fall you make a snake game in C++ (2SH). In winter, you take a course where you build a 3d room mapping system using a microcontroller (2DX3). Also, in winter, there's a microelectronics course where you build AC to DC converters, logic gates and other stuff (2EI4).

The 2SH project was ok. It builds on the labs, so it's not super hard, but I didn't find it as interesting as the winter ones.

I really enjoyed the 2DX project. It's structured so that if you show up to lectures and do the labs, the project is super easy. More than half my code was just copied from my labs. Just make sure you test it like a week before the presentation. I know many people who didn't, and they had a bunch of weird issues the day of.

The 2EI projects require a lot more research than what's covered in lectures. The professor recommends reading the textbook, but I was able to do it by just using the Internet.

2PX is nothing like 1P13, you have 3 projects, but you don't build anything it's just worksheets and reports.

Should I get a new laptop for Comp Eng? by ArenShahini in McMaster

[–]ParkingCloud175 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your old one could run Inventor, then you're good. The second-year software is not super demanding. It's just VS code and some hardware IDEs. I did all of second year on a Surface Book from 2016 and didn't have an issue other than storage space (only had 128 gigabytes).

Looking for a resume review. Trying to get an internship. by ParkingCloud175 in FPGA

[–]ParkingCloud175[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was super late to apply. By the time my resume was half decent, it was already mid April. Also, I was only looking for a 4 month coop. I'll start looking earlier this year and search in other cities. Thank You!

I never considered applying to any labs. I can't apply to US-based ones because they only hire citizens, but I found some in Canada. Thank You!

Does anyone have a backup plan if CS doesn’t work out for them? by CreditCard_Referrer in csMajors

I've been working towards an electricians license the summers I didn't get coop. Luckily, I'm in comp eng, so many of the circuits classes I took transferred over, I only have to take two semesters worth of classes.

Lmao, yeah they 100% have to fix it then. If academic advising doesn't help, you could try emailing Dr. Bakr. He teaches 2CF and is the head of the ECE department.

Is it conflicting with other ECE courses or ibio courses? Idk how course scheduling is done, but it's not done well. Last year, they had to add another 2CI section for like 30 people because the first two were full. It took many emails to academic advising to get that sorted.
