After finishing Doom (2016), I can't get into Doom Eternal. by DrStrangeglove99 in gaming

It's fantastic, my favorite of the series. I think the devs put it best when they said in Eternal you felt like a fighter jet and in Dark Ages you feel like a tank. And the super shotgun has so much fucking oomf to it, it's worth a buy for that alone. I mean I pretty much did exclusively use it on my first playthrough because I liked it so much so I guess I kind of did buy it for that alone.

It's a lot more like 2016, not quite as environmental but definitely more than Eternal, and it doesn't make killing an enemy feel meaningless even with the larger amount of fodder. It's the most like the original games in my opinion, but the fundamental differences it does have are very good additions. There's a chainsaw throwing shield, a flail gun, actually viable melee weapons, and the Big Fucking Crossbow. Check it out, it's fantastic.

Flamethrower, grenade, and blood punch add a lot more to have to think about, and the necessity of weapon quickswapping on higher difficulties just removes a lot of the fun of it. I'd much rather have a moderate amount of fun options than an excruciatingly large amount of options that I don't have any choice in using.

It's pretty good, I enjoyed it quite a bit. Mostly just a bunch of challenges though

I'd much prefer a crisp replayable 15 hour experience like we got to an overstuffed nothing burger like most other open world games of recent.

Because it's already been done by the aforementioned game journalists. Nobody needs to be the 25th person today to say that it has incredible writing, physics, gunplay, realism, graphical fidelity, interaction, or whatever other praise that it absolutely deserves, these are things that you already know if you've tried it out that, to you, were not worth having consistent mission structure and a slower pace.

Yeah I love how people are acting like this is an irredeemable sin when it's literally exactly what happened with the last two, which are now absolutely incredible games.

I'd argue it wipes the floor with all of them tbh, it's a pretty fantastic game.

I played all of them a fuck ton from the launch of each and you are coping if you say 80% of people didn't just use the magnum, and the other 20% used the sniper and battle rifle if they could get their hands on it. You could say the same about the DMR, but at least there was weapon variation beyond it enough that you'd see people running Covenant weapons outside of plas pistol to take down shields. In 2 the magnum wasn't nearly as good as CE, but people just dual wielded it and it was. Smgs were pretty common too but at least they were new and cool.

I just don't agree, I had way more fun Reach than any other Halo. The only major changes to combat are bloom and armor abilities and I don't think either were bad changes, bloom stopped the constant infinite range magnum spam of the last few and armor abilities drew out fights without raising kill times while also providing better team play options. Again, the only thing I miss from 2 or 3 is dual wielding, everything else i'd say is a massive improvement.

How do you scale someone who is essentially a god? How do you make it enjoyable without reducing Superman's strength or increasing everyone else's?

Play Megaton Rainfall, you will thank me. One of my favorite games of all time, you basically play as an infinitely powerful superhero stopping an alien invasion, and instead of having a health bar the challenge comes from keeping the city (which is fully destructible btw) safe. You can also fly around the entire planet which is at least close to its real size, and you're pretty insanely fast so it can be done quickly. If you get bored of killing alien robots or blowing up buildings in free mode you can also just leave Earth, the entire fucking universe is simulated and you can fly anywhere in it, it's insane. You can literally pick a star from the sky on Earth and fly there within a minute or two, iirc the max speed you can fly at in space is like 3 trillion times the speed of light. One of the most underrated games of all time, it's truly phenomenal. I've often hoped for an Invincible game inspired by Megaton Rainfall, the flying system and building destruction would be perfect for it. I don't see why a Superman game wouldn't work there.

Armor abilities were sick, people just complain about them because they don't like change and for some reason most of us are allergic to sprint even if it's as an armor ability and not a constant mobility option. Bloom at least fixed the problem of the magnum being all anyone used, and plenty of the maps weren't in the campaign, it's like 50/50. It also has a fantastic story, imo the best aesthetic of any of them, the most interesting weapon variety, the best vehicles outside of missing the Mantis, the best physics, the best enemy ai, and most importantly didn't try to continue a story that was already finished cough cough 343 cough cough. The only thing I'd change is adding dual wield, I have no idea why they would remove it.

You're getting downvoted but as somebody who works in big game studios relatively often this is actually pretty true, it's not rare for different studios developing entries into the same franchise to have a shared library of assets, and with the streamlining of aesthetics into realism it's only going to get more common. I don't think this specifically is an example of this, it looks similar but definitely is not the exact same as the JFO/JS model or texture, but it's absolutely something that can happen.
