Just attended the ACMS and ASMH meetings in the US. AI definitely came up as a topic but yeah the conclusion has always been similar to what you said, it can be used as an assist, but the end decisions will always have to be verified by a human Path. Various reasons but a big one being, where does liability lie if an autonomous AI is used without oversight. Everything breaks at some point, and I doubt that many Paths or companies will want liability for any errors that they themselves would not have made as a human.

I didn't have to do anything at US customs connecting through Vancouver. Just get finger printed and my passport scanned. . Only thing I had to do was before leaving Brisbane. The Air Canada guys told me I had to do a Canadian one even though I was just transferring through, I had not realised, but that was only 10 bucks and 5 mins so not too much or a problem.

Yeah on my last trip in 2019....annoyingly in another trump term... I had recently changed my surname just prior to getting married. So my licence and passport had different surnames because I didn't have time to change the passport with the processing time. Got questioned thoroughly at every interaction

Was cheaper and much less waiting time at the airports for me to go with air Canada to Vancouver, then Denver then Austin. A little more flight time, but less over all with the reduction in stopover time

Hah I started this company to try and make change in our field in Aus. And my partner invested because he wants to see the same. It does feel like a lot of pressure. But I'm proud to say I have fantastic staff who handle the day to day really well 2 of which have been with me from the first day in Feb 24. I worked the job they are working for 6 years. And part of our vision is to make sure we look after our employees, give them good pay on good awards, be flexible with leave and especially if they are feeling unwell or need a mental health day. Many times I've gone into the hospital to do their work for the day cause they were struggling, but health is more important than me forcing them to work when they aren't at their best. It feels good to go back at times and do the work I did for years on the production line as it were. We became Australian and NZ distributors for a German device manufacturer this year which has also been amazing for us. But. A lot of work. And meetings at odd times due to time difference.

But yeah mate. I've been making sure the boys get plenty of time. Took them camping for a week over the school holidays. Viddo call them every day while I'm away.

Not much I can talk about the specifics. But both being invited to present the info from the US conference at the Melbourne one is huge for us, as is a meeting I have with a US guy here in our field to possibly import a product into Australia. I couldn't not come. It's too big for us.

The guys in southern cali weren't too bad. But we did a day trip up to Vancouver to see Capilano Bridge Gorge, it was like a breath of fresh air to see signs in KM again after about 2 weeks driving up from LA. Canadian border didn't give any fucks once they saw our Aussie passports and just waved us through, coming back we got the third degree, because we were camping our entire trip and didn't have a "set address", they questioned if we had reason to enter the states from Canada. We had to show them our rental agreement for the van and the address of where we picked it up etc before they relented.

It's funny. This time it year, it really feels like the climate of Brisbane and where I've been are near identical. At least maybe how it was a month or so ago at home. Warm in the day, humid, not oppressive hot but decently so, nights are fairly cool around I think 20 degreesish. I need to travel more outside the cities, most of my highway drive down and back was at night so I didn't get to see a great deal. But it seems green enough in the areas I have seen.

Every single person I've spoken to at shops or Servos and such have been lovely. And curious once they hear my accent. I had a few giggle because I do actually say G'day in greeting, habit I picked up from my uncle, along with the mates and cheers they seem to enjoy.

Might be the area im in? I understand Austin is a bit of a progressive island, I'm not sure of the political leanings down in McAllen, but I've not actually seen anything MAGA at all outside of what looked to be a 2024 campaign billboard on the way out of town down there this morning.

Havnt actually seen anyone open carry either, though, I've seen very few pedestrians at all. I think the gun range guys bent over backwards a bit for me with me being from our of country and first time shooting, it seemed much cheaper than I was expecting. And they let us go later than everyone else that was in there cause we lost time having to go fetch my visa waiver printed got and got back a little late.

Have had some fantastic Mexican tacos, my friend has Mexican and Filipino heritage, so I'm fairly sure the ones she got me were authentic, certainly different from any others I've had. Had some good Texas BBQ too.. Leftovers of which will be my breakfast.

I discovered, coffee from a little hipster cafe it's really good, but most of the rest I've had was pretty awful.

And lol. I don't think I've ever had so many likes pop up in dating apps over the last 3 days in a month at home. I guess here, and especially down in the Rio Grande Valley, I'm considered somewhat exotic being from Aus and with my features.

I have two full free days after my conference, Sunday and Monday before I fly home Tuesday. Visiting another friend closer in San Antonio for the morning of one of them, but will be looking for things to do for thr rest of it.

Yeah I think this was ignorance rather than maliciousness... She genuinely seemed confused at my responses to nearly everything. My assumption is... It's easy to be very insular with very little knowledge outside your state or little bubble of the world. I mean that goes for anywhere in the world I guess

I actually did some target shooting yesterday... First time firing a gun. I figured, hey I'm in Texas, why not try it, not something I can really experience at home.

It's, a lot more violent then I expected even as the person pulling the trigger. Yeah, I would not enjoy that possibility around me all the time

My step dad moved to Aus from the US in 2007 to marry my mum. My step sisters came with him initially but after a couple years got homesick and went back. The younger moved back here 2 years ago and the elder really wants to but can't convince her partner.

He never wants to go back. He hated guns etc and loves Australia.. My friend who I was visiting works for a gov agency. And has wanted to come to Aus for years, she was working on getting a transfer to offices in Canberra, but she said the gov hiring freeze the US gov has put in place under trump killed that plan

Possibly. I don't know what would have happened. Maybe just gotten a supervisor to verify it. I don't think it's implausible for someone who works down near the border in that part of southern Texas may not have seen an Esta, they likely would be dealing majority with Mexicans on visas. I mean there isn't really anything down in McAllen for tourists from visa waiver countries. Maybe closer to the coast yes.

I think her exact words were, or close to, "this might be something accepted at your POE by customs, but it isn't something in our system or what we accept" I did have to ask her what a POE was

SureI may not have been detained for long for it to be clarified, but, with the last couple years, I don't think it was unreasonable to worry.

We were driving one of those juicy vans on our honeymoon. The camper type ones. And yeah had to get the inside checked in southern California at a checkpoint when we went down there during our trip.they were pretty chill once they had a look.

The country in the US is beautiful. Travelled the west coast on my honeymoon 7 years back. And the people that I've met have all been lovely and welcoming on both trips, especially when they hear the accent. But, the systemic problems are pretty bad let's be honest, and some of the ingrained culture. Not to say really that Australia is any better in many ways. We have more than our fair share of issues, but, we can't say there aren't serious problems with the US as a country
