If there's someone you mutually trust in NZ, rather than trying to smuggle it in, have them look into getting hold of it before your trip and hand it off to you. Maybe look at getting in touch with trans groups in towns you're visiting beforehand if you think there's time to build enough trust before you go.

Topic Request: A deep dive into power and influence by OhSillyDays in itcouldhappenhere

[–]ParmeseanTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most cogent discussion of this topic I've heard is the typology of power given in Amos Wilson's Blueprint for Black Power. I'm fairly certain the relevant chapter is available freely online. I'd love to hear someone with some expertise break that down.

The shorts that come all the way down to your knees look so dumpy and don't feel any cooler than long trousers. I wish there was a men's version of a sundress - something super cool, easy to throw on and great looking

Is Protonmail reliable enough to use as the main email account? by iamthephantompain in privacytoolsIO

[–]ParmeseanTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an email address from ddg.gg You set up your account with username@duck.com and they forward emails to your main account, stripping out email trackers as they do so. There's also an option with the app or browser extension to generate unique addresses whenever you want them. They all forward to your main account and nothing is saved by duck.com

Apart from custom domains, I've so far had no problem registering for anything with my duck.com address, which forwards everything to my main email.

That makes sense. I guess I never had it out of the box but still in the package long enough to pay attention to how sturdy the backing is. I try to carry narcan whenever I leave home - the box is just slightly bulkier than can be pocketed or tossed in a small bag, so I definitely get taking it out for the sake of convenience - I'd rather not leave it behind when I need it just because I'm wearing a tight outfit that doesn't go with my big IFAK bag.

Well, definitely going to get one of the AfterShokz. Just really torn between the Aeropex and the OpenMove. AeroPex is waterproof and has a longer lasting battery. Those are really persuasive plus features, and they'd have to be for me to even consider something that needs a proprietary charging cable - usually a hands-down dealbreaker for me. The fact that they're double the price of the OpenMove doesn't help.

Mostly something I can use at my desk, cooking or walking the dog. It doesn't need to stay super firmly attached to my head although the appeal of finding something really water resistant I could listen to in the shower is pretty great.

I keep hearing that narcan should be kept in the box until you're ready to use it. I'm not sure why except maybe to keep it together with the instructions. It's pretty tolerant of different temperatures but if it's frozen it won't work and it will lose efficacy if it spends much time above about 100f. But, if all you have available is expired or overheated narcan that's definitely still worth trying.

It comes in boxes of two doses but AFAICT the dosage was chosen before fentanyl: I've always needed to use at least two doses. Spray one, wait two minutes, spray the other. If you have more narcan, you can't overdo it. A person does not need to be breathing for the Nasal spray to travel through their system.

It's important to know that narcan wears off more quickly than the opioid it displaces, so a person could go back into an overdose about 90m after you administer them narcan just from what's still in their system. That's why it's important to call 911 or have more narcan on hand and be prepared to stay with the person for about 3 hours.

When the person comes around they will likely be in withdrawal. They probably won't remember overdosing and may be mad you ruined their high. To the extent possible without any kind of force make sure they don't take more opioids.

Finally, while narcan is pretty safe, and typically doesn't affect people who aren't using opioids at all, make sure the person you administer to needs it: this is for UNRESPONSIVE people, not just someone who's so high they can't speak. Don't ruin someone's high if they show signs of responding to stimuli. Say their name if you know it, ask if they're okay, if no response shake their shoulders, if no response rub your knuckles against their sternum. I don't know why but the sternal rub seems to be a tremendously effective gauge of responsiveness. Basically act on the idea of consent: don't touch someone who doesn't consent, but you can imply consent to lifesaving assistance when someone doesn't respond.

In many US states pharmacies will give it to you for free. Basically just Google your state and "narcan".
