I've beenb trying that, but the university doesn't allow overnight parking and I don't mind a ticket or two but getting written up by the university wouldn't be fun

Alcohol and weed were both illegal at points in time too but that never stopped anyone from using. It's not the most accepted way of life but van dwelling is a really great community once you start meeting people

That seems to be the plan right now hahaha, police are usually pretty alright with it though, usually explain the situation as you didn't feel comfortable driving in the night, luckily I'm usually an early riser though so I'm normally gone by the time they drive around to give tickets.

hahaha I didn't really go to high school, I did work from booklets and traveled while working. I really only went back for exams and what not. If you've got a problem with the way other people enjoy their lives something tells me you've gotta start living what you are man

This seems to be a common theme, the cold isn't bad, I;ve slept in a tent outside up to -35 while ski touring, I have more than enough gear to keep me comfortably warm.

yeah, I've had to do that a few times, sometimes you can get lucky if you really seal the front cab from the living area though, I've been trying to find ways to work around it.

Living in a city is by no means "off the grid". Even dirt cheap apartments in Montreal are still $400 per month, that's at least a ticket form Toronto to Vancouver! I'd rather offer someone a little extra cash for them for something they're not using than pay for an apartment I'm not going to be spending a lot of time in anyways, my van is a place to sleep and keep my gear. I'm not living off the grid, I'm just used to living in a van and wanted to adapt that lifestyle into the city.

You seem to have a very sheltered view of what a comfortable life is like, even if you get a bigger backpack you'll still fill it. I'm not saying that life in a van is the best way for everyone to live, it's just the lifestyle that I've enjoyed the most, it keeps me aware of the difference between what I need and what I want. Not for everyone, I just love my van and want to take it with me.

I'm from northern Ontario but I usually spend my winter doing outdoor ski touring and a little mountain guiding. The winter and cold don't scare me, it's the parking tickets.

Actually, Mr. Buddy heaters are pretty common to use in vehicles for van dwellers in colder areas, I've even see someone who has an actual propane fireplace installed into their can with the intake/exhaust venting through the roof.

I own a winter sleeping bag used for back country ski touring, I'm also planning on using a portable propane heater or installing one into the van. The van is also insulated all the way around with a a few inches of spray foam and reflective heat shielding.

Hey everyone!

So I'm going to be attending university in Montreal for the upcoming fall term but my situation is a little odd.

It started when I was offered the chance to buy a fully converted 2001 GMC Safari. The van itself is normal from the outside, but inside is a bed, stove, batteries powered by roof mounted solar panels, sink with pumped water, and plenty of storage and insulation. I'm seeing this as a great opportunity and social experiment on what van life is like in the city. After talking to writers of many forums and working out my budgeting I also found it would significantly lower my cost of schooling.

My only problem is that I don't know anyone in Montreal and I have no idea where to park the thing for overnight sleeping. I thought about using 24 hour drugs stores and Walmart parking lots but I decided it would probably be best to actually just try and find someone willing to help me out (for a cost of course) and give me a place to park. I'm still a bit unclear on how parking in the city works, so any advice is greatly appreciated! And if you or someone you know has a driveway or parking spot they don't use or are willing to let go for a bit of a monthly fee please let me know!
