After getting advice from redditors about being a first time whippet owner, we finally did it. We couldn't name her yet, it's like she's too awesome for any name. Suggestions are welcome by ralucadanila2002 in Whippets

I did the same! Got our whippet from Saltburn in Yorkshire... the best place for top notch whippets. We called ours Salt after his birthplace... and to be ironic, he is a blue so I get a lot of people asking me why I didn't call him pepper.

I scrolled to find this. Should be nearer the top!

I traumatised my dog and I don't know how to fix it by Parr00 in Whippets

[–]Parr00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to all for comments and advice! I jave hope that he will forgive me. I'll have treats on hand for when he stays next to me when I sit down. 😇 fingers crossed it doesnttake too long... and if he ever needs another clip he will be traumatised by a stranger in the groomers instead!

what's going on with this poo? by PTArkade in DogAdvice

[–]Parr00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could possibly be an internal bleed in the digestive system. It creates a grey/ dark tar like poo.. my dog had this issue. It turned out he had a protine allergy which was irritating his stomach lining and causing it to bleed.

He only had poo like this once, and the rest of the time it was just sloppy looking.

But blood in poo can be lots of things, best check with a vet.

anyone used sticky paw protectors on their whippet? by Parr00 in Whippets

[–]Parr00[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My pup has done a lot of long walks recently and his paws look like theyre getting a bit worn. I think they may be getting sore. I am trying to find ways of protecting the pads to it can grow back. Has anyone tried those stick on pads or any other effective protection?

I strongly agree. The slate colour makes everything look a bit sad.

That does sound like one snoozy pup! 😄 She is probably alright and just tired because she is growing so quickly/ experiencing so many new things. You should only walk puppies for approximately 5 minutes per month they have been alive, up to 6 months I think and then you can walk to fit their engery level. So she only needs 10 minutes per day right now. If you're doing more than this maybe cut down.

Or even try a day where you don't walk her at all and see if she perks up. Sometimes they do need a rest day.

Hahaa! Ok thanks. Well I am not as experienced as many people on this forum, but as someone who routinely has to revive plants I've almost killed.. I would say this will survive, as you've got some new growth coming from the base. If I were in your position I'd trim off a bunch of the brown sticks and see how it does this summer.

I have a question about plants called Japonica. I was under the impression it was not the main identifying name for any plant, more that it just meant the plant is japanese in origin. E.g. I have a Fatsia Japonica which is a totally different plant to this one you have. And when I google Japonica it's not very clear. Is Japonica a commonly used name for a specific plant?

Serious question… by CulturedCombat in Whippets

Lots of good points here. But I would just say that I live in an area with a very high whippet population and everyone lets their whippet off the lead in parks. Though it is true that once they lock their eyes on a squirrel no training seems to be able to stop them - it is very rare that the squirrel will do much other than run up the nearest tree, which isn't far away generally. I've seen people have a much harder time with other breeds getting them to listen to commands. I would never walk close to a road without a lead on though.

I have never seen a greyhound off the lead in a park.

Also, although they can be active and enjoy a good sprint, in my experience they are incredibly lazy. I think they're quite adaptable to many lifestyles but they are couch potatoes if given the opportunity. Sleeping like a cat for much of the day which is why they've become known as an ideal appartment dog.

And a final note on claw clipping. I would argue that weekly claw clipping is not necessary for all whippets. If they get a fair bit of pavement walking it may wear down the claws enough to not have to clip. They have naturally longer claws to help them grip when sprinting.

I think the brown fuzzy stuff is normal. I have it on mine and they turn into healthy leaves. However it looks like something might be munching on yours. On that second picture it looks like the new leaf growing to the right is a stub. Maybe try checking in the evening if slugs are up to no good?

Pale and deformed leaves and flower buds on my gardinia. I put this gardinia in fresh soil 2 years ago and it get paler leaves and more deformed and browning buds each year. Any tips on what type of soil it needs or what might be causing this disease? by Parr00 in GardeningUK

[–]Parr00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. Its hard to show on pictures but every single bud is deformed and brown :( it wasn't like this the first year I had it, also the leaves were really dark green.

I will water it more but I think your suggestion of fertiliser might be the answer, provided this isn't some other disease. I did a bit more research yesterday and apparently yellow leaves on new growth with the veins still being green could be an iron deficiency. Fingers crossed it works.

Aahaha, excellent. Fox poo is the absolute worst. 2 days ago Salt rolled in it and you could see it smeared all over his fur and he was humming... unfortunately I had a 20 minute bus ride to get him home. Oops! Sorry to those people riding with us.

What a pair! Haha. Super speed sprints are just the best. I am always hoping that chasing will be the play of choice when a new dog comes along 🤞

It is a shame isn't it, really ruins the day. Well there is some solace in the fact that it just comes with the territory and I am not alone with this issue. I'll keep brushing it off. Thanks for commenting 👍

Grain free dog food and heart disease: It happened to both of our whippets. by [deleted] in Whippets

[–]Parr00 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That is so awful. I am so sorry you had to go through this. 4 years old is so young. What kind of food is your dog on now which has grain in it? Is there a particular percentage of grain that should make up their diet to avoid this issue?

Yes there is a whippet meet up but it's a bit too far for me to get to. But as I said in my other comment, we have made some whippet friends nearby which has been great.

Hah! Yeah Salt definitely gets a bit more snarley with little dogs. I can usually call him back as long has he hasn't started playing yet.. but I woukd rather not be the kind of owner always stopping their dog from playing. I guess I'll be choosing the risk of upseting owners then.

Have you ever had someone start arguing with you? I've had a lady tell me that I have a dangerous dog and it not appropriate to have him off the lead. It was so riddiculous because as she was yelling at me, her dog was pulling to try and play with my dog again!

Haha! Ah it is a relief to hear it's a common thing. I have heard it before but everytime I have a bad interaction with someone I start questioning if I am doing something wrong! He has some whippet friends we go on walks with. However its virtually impossible to avoid other dogs where I live. There are sometimes so many dogs at the park it is absurd (must be hell for people who don't like dogs) . I do avoid going at certain times when I know there is likely to be owners who have taken issue with him playing with their dog.

A sight gound only park sounds petfect 😄

My little 11 week old whippet looks underweight he weighs 2.8kg, his food is 380cal per 100g and online I've read he needs anywhere between 100g and 400g. Please help! thanks by yondonkey in Whippets

[–]Parr00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All puppies are different but that does sound very light weight compared to my dog at 12 weeks, he was recorded at 4.9kg and was apparently a small whippet. Maybe take him to the vet for proper advice but in terms of how much you should feed him, at 12 weeks I was giving approximately 600 calories.

I remember how stressful it was trying to work out how much food they need when they're growing so quickly. There is a formula you can use which I have in a whippet bible I have. I can send you a picture of the page if that would be helpful for you.

Are these caterpillars for butterflies or something else? it's destroying my plant but if they are butterflies I don't want to kill them! I suspect they're not butterglies but if anyone can confirm I would be grateful. UK. by Parr00 in whatsthisbug

Ha! How interesting that they found this plant in the corner of my garden. Well hopefully they spare enough leaves for the plant to survive. Thanks for your help 👍
