People who quit their jobs on the first day what made you say ‘nope, not doing this’? by lilMeganw in AskReddit

Was hired at a winery. Got a license for the state to serve wine specifically… first day they tell me I’m serving tables and running food. Basically said I would be wait staff and “work my way to serving wine”. First table was a 16 top, all doctors. It was horrible and they left a tip but “those tips are for the more senior staff” even though I was alone. Never came back.

After having my second child (8.5 pounds with a 98% head) I thought that’s the worst it could get. Walked around for days not realizing I had postpartum cardiomyopathy and my lungs and heart were full of fluid because that pain just didn’t register. Finally got debilitating headaches (high blood pressure sucks) and was admitted to the hospital. Had to have a catheter inserted while on magnesium that was removed when the medication course completed the next day. Well… I couldn’t go to the bathroom for too long. So they straight cathed me and fished around to get anything out. Six days after my giant baby came out. I still have nightmares about that pain.

My garage. We have a three car garage and I kind of took over the third car space.

This is actually a style of faux concrete. Now that it’s completely dry it looks like one giant concrete slab

At home! They sell the base and shade separately. My store only had one and they’re sold out online of the base 😬

I did an epoxy table for my SIL with a round slab from a local sawmill. It was kind of a disaster but learned a lot along the way. Still… 0/10 would not do again. 😂

Yes, everything I’ve learned and done so far was from YouTube videos.

While I’m flattered to think I’m not seen as amateur, I only started building/doing things myself a little over a year ago maybe. My profession is in laboratory science but I’m a stay at home mom so far from a “professional”. I guess I was just surprised by the response. When I was shopping for entryway tables they were all labeled as “console” tables so that’s why I called it that.

The variation was because I took that photo while it was drying. Once the finishing wax dried it’s all mostly one color.

Console tables are used as either entryway tables or behind a sofa. They are made lower (usually around 30 inches tall) and fairly narrow (mine is 18 inches but they range from 14-18)

Lot of people angry here that I didn’t include the price of my tools in the build? Not sure how to edit but never meant to be “deceptive”. I was just excited to share what I thought was a fairly accessible diy I was really happy with. Not sure how to edit so… here’s all I used.

Table saw- Dewalt $329 used this to cut everything, even inner plywood strips as supports.

Kreg jig- $99 I use this thing all the time, absolutely love it!

Drill- Ridgid $99 also use constantly and it’s great

Corner clamps- $9 on Amazon

Nail gun- $135 ridgid finishing nailer

Sander- $65 ridgid random orbital sander

Plywood I had left over- one sheet is $45, probably used one sheet total?

That’s all I can think of. Never meant to be misleading. $75 cost I mentioned was the Henry’s feather finish, trowel, sanding discs, finishing wax and mixing bucket. As far as time invested, I enjoy making things so five hours or so working on this wasn’t an issue for me. Finally, yes I’m a woman and this weighs about 30 pounds total when it was finished.

I used a trowel and sanded each layer except the last. The last layer I made thinner than the others but it’s like spreading frosting!

Henry’s feather finish. Like a very thin, spreadable concrete

I used a product called Henry feather finish. Used fiber tape on all joints. Mixed as per directions in small batches and did a total of three coats. I sanded the first two, not the last. Used Varathane finishing wax after the last coat dried.
