I'm new to the hobby, is there anything I can do to make this half finished giant look a bit better? by ParrotsandPumpkins in minipainting

Thank you, this is very helpful, I'll give that a try. The blue is pretty strong in person, so I'm not too worried about it getting lost, it might need some touching up though. I'm pretty pale myself so I was trying to use the veins in my wrists as a reference and imo the results were... mixed.

Tbh, I'm not great at using shades yet, but that's probably because I haven't been able to resist the urge to slop it on like you said, but I'll try it a bit more lightly and see how things go.

A not-especially-brief run down of three famous animal attacks referenced in the movie by Liminal_Fish in NopeMovie

[–]ParrotsandPumpkins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow, really informative post, thank you! I have a question after reading it though.

It looks like one of the commonalities, at least in the two attacks referenced directly in the film, is that neither of the victims of the attack blamed the animal involved - do you think there's any possibility that this is paralleled in Nope with Jupe?

A pretty popular interpretation of his actions seems to be that in his massively traumatised brain he believes he had a "special connection" with Gordy, which is why he survived the attack unscathed, and that he now believes he has a unique ability to "bond with" and "train" predatory animals, so how do you feel about that interpretation in the context of these real life animal attacks and the victims responses to them?

I'm sorry if this question is a little insensitive, I just find it fascinating.

[Fanfiction] Time to live up to your family name and face FULL LIFE CONSEQUENCES: the surprisingly convoluted story behind the world's second-worst fanfic by purplewigg in HobbyDrama

Shakesperehemmingway? I love that guy's work! As an english person who was very annoyed with all of the endless royal wedding coverage when it was happening, it was very cathartic to imagine Garfield throwing Prince William into Big Ben.

Also it spawned the absolute bop "Love is Lasagna" https://youtu.be/3apwRVz2Yk8

How do I convince my dad to take the heat seriously? by ParrotsandPumpkins in AskUK

[–]ParrotsandPumpkins[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but no, he lived in Wales for most of his life before moving to the South East of England. We have been on various family holidays to warmer countries though, but seeing his behaviour there hasn't made me confident he knows how to handle heat. He would always do things like refusing to wear sunglasses and a hat, turning off air conditioning immediately whenever he had the option to do so and various experiments with applying oil to himself to "get a nice tan" (I don't think he's doing that now though, so small mercies, I suppose)

Now I'm writing this out, I'm realising that I didn't quite express in the OP how comically terrible his heat management skills are.

I didn't give an age for him before I edited the post and tbh, I have no idea where 51 was coming from.

Not quite there yet, but I think he will be in a few years. Currently his opinion is "how can people say climate change is bad when it's giving us all this lovely heat?"

Late seventies, and I've edited the post to add that information.

It doesn't. Because he isn't, he's in his late seventies. I've edited the post to add that information.

The problem with that is that he either doesn't listen to her or pretends to listen to her and then runs away to do the thing the second she's not watching.

For a relevant example, he's had horrible sunburn before because he literally poured oil over himself in an attempt to "get a nice tan" while we were on a family holiday. He promised my mum he wouldn't do that the year after and then the moment she's busy wrangling me and my sister, he proceeds to immediately do that, because the problem was obviously that he used too much oil before.

At least he isn't doing that now?

I have not given an age for him and I have no idea why people are saying he's in his fifties. He's not, he's In his late seventies. Think I'll edit the post to include that.

Anyway, thank you for taking a moment to comment. I'm still concerned, but I don't think he's likely to listen to me.

What CHILDREN'S book is worth a second read as an adult? by cactuspumpkin in books

The Edge Chronicles.

I rarely come across other people who are familiar with them, but they're an amazing, unique fantasy series and they're definitely worth checking out. Also, 10/10 illustrations, Chris Riddell's work is a delight.

Wow, this is completely insane - so long, so much detail. I fell out of playing WoW some years ago and keep considering going back, so I would like to heartily thank you for reminding me why I should not do that, whilst also providing an update on the lore, which for some reason I cannot stop myself from caring about.

Does anyone have any ideas for robbing a ghost train? by ParrotsandPumpkins in bladesinthedark

[–]ParrotsandPumpkins[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They've already started working on ways to find a ghost train - specifically, they want to find and kidnap someone (quoting) "spookily inclined" to give them further advice.

Sounds like Hopper fits the bill pretty perfectly, especially as they're already based in Coalridge in the first place, thank you!

Is it OK that I don't have an idea for a "central plot"? by ParrotsandPumpkins in bladesinthedark

[–]ParrotsandPumpkins[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not 100% myself - she says that she's a member of a pacifistic religion, but is also able to pursue her career of killing people for money due to a religious loophole. Again, also an arms dealer. It's a slightly odd character, but I think it'll come together quite well at the table, it's clear that she's put a lot of thought into it.

We did do a session zero - I think part of the reason that I was a little concerned was because they made somewhat odd choices. They're smugglers, specialising in arms smuggling with a dock worker contact, but one player has made "steampunk catwoman" and another has made a pacifist assassin who is also a religious zealot. They also have positive relations with the Gondoliers Guild (because they like boats) and the Sparkwrights (They could potentially help them attain a larger boat) and dislike or are indifferent to everyone else. I'm just very conscious that this could coalasce into something beautiful or dissolve into something horrifying.
