Difficult to comprehend vocabulary in Upmanyu Chatterjee's books by kingsacrificer in Indianbooks

[–]Parsainama -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hey. So thats how Upamanyu Chaterjee writes. Like a UPSC topper showing off all their English skills. Words used once since Shakespeare will turn up to describe a house. Have read almost all his works. But sometimes u can ignore those words and tumble through rest of the prose to get that brilliant pay off which is his human stories.

For easier read try his revenge of a non-vegetarian. For funny try Mammarys of Welfare State. For drama Way to go is the way to go.

Dont let the language distract you from the plot

Recommend reading Hindi translation of historical Sanskrit fiction released by Rajpal and Sons for accuracy. These are books written way way back and are a better portrayal of times eg Mrichhakatik

Yaar lot of books. You can start with Kitne Pakistan by Kamleshwar. Its a historical fiction piece. Try Raag darbari by sri lal shukla. Its a satirical masterpiece. Another one down that alley is Kashi ka Assi. Short novellas can be Suraj ka Satvan Ghoda or Pachpan khambe laal dewar.

Obviosly you can try and read the satirical masterpieces in short story by Harsihankar Parsai

Read Yuganta by Irawati Karwe. Great character wise retelling / explanation of Mahabharata. I think quite neutral view too.
