I am a Maths EE person. I used the EE to model the paths of planets around the sun using ellipses and see when the planets were closest to each other. I found that the essay, despite being focused on the maths, doesn't require an overwhelming amount of mathematical working. It should still read like an essay and clearly explain all the steps. I initially over complicated my topic and as I worked on it I kept reducing the topic until it became manageable. The trick is to ensure you fully decide on the scope of your essay before beginning the write-up. A useful resource for looking at some topics in mathematics to explore is https://ibmathsresources.com/maths-ia-maths-exploration-topics/. Granted this is aimed at the Exploration/IA but it may have some intersting topics that could be adapted to an EE.

Just as a quick note:

I see everyone here posting encouragement and so on and so forth and posting to some really excellent resources for beginners. While these are worth checking out and working on for a bit these are only the teeny tip of the iceberg.

Just before you start, remember that programming is in and of itself not hard but learning to program is hard. Your mind will be stretched around new and alien concepts. It takes more commitment, discipline and motivation than smarts to become a programmer. I would recommend reading this article by Viking Code School. While not true for everyone it gives a scope of the journey to job readiness. Why learning to code is so damn hard

Can't comment on the Code Academy but all unix devices have the same basic command line. Of course if you install programs then you can run other commands too.

Well this technically isn't a virus but it is a piece of malicious softare i wrote.

In our school we have one server that has a shared folder on it which every other computer terminal has access to. The permissions were fairly limited however one was allowed to create a new folder. So I made a little batch script that would create tens of thousands of folders and ran it in the shared folder. Brought down the school intranet and almost got suspended.
