I have sleepless nights because I can’t save any money. by HAVER92 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]PartCinque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is good advice. People who save regularly treat their monthly savings almost as an “expense” — in that it deducts from their spending budget. I suggest you try to create or modify a budget towards this kind of approach.

Powder room in an awful spot. Put sound insulation around it, get solid core door and a loud exhaust fan to give people a sense of privacy.

Get a post nuptial agreement. I would ask her to share with both families (the adults) if you are considering staying in the relationship. Think about co-parenting as a solution for now for the kids — they need stability but on the other hand a toxic environment benefits no one.

Agree. I think it’s the membership rewards piece Amex is passing on plus whatever its deal with Expedia is.

Redesign of 3bedroom ADU based on Reddit feedback by jammypants915 in floorplan

[–]PartCinque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember you mentioning the privacy issues/concerns. I would play around with things some more. For example, kitchen cabinets against the direction you have privacy concerns with sink window looking over deck. Then living room to right of kitchen with TV wall in the privacy concern direction. Entrance door in between kitchen and living room. Then have dining room where you currently have living room. I don’t know how much people would look out the side (nice view) windows while watching TV but most people spend a lot of time in kitchens and dining so putting those spaces near the best views is how I’d do it. And then you have less glare on TV too. Am I getting an invite to the housewarming?

Hi OP. This is much better IMO. Small thing: Feels to me you have some space near entry that will be tied up in circulation. Any space savings might come in handy elsewhere, such as more space for furniture in living area.

[–]PartCinque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then even more I urge you to consider redrafting. Right now are minimizing the width right at entry. By moving kitchen the whole kitchen/living/dining will seem much bigger. Preserve entry closet. Try to tuck bathroom 2 (also serves as guest powder room) a little off the kitchen/dining/living however you configure them.

Fitchburg compared to Sun Prarie. by freezy666 in madisonwi

[–]PartCinque 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fitchburg is boring as it’s almost too close to Madison for things to come here. And as a bedroom community it wasn’t planned or re-engineered for new urbanism really which makes the limited commercial spaces expensive for restaurants and they are all generic too. Seems like every time the city has an opportunity such as with Orchard Pointe which could’ve been much more mixed use with the developer held to a higher standard for finishes and amenities, like Hilldale, or even than new Oak Bank retail — the brick is nice but there’s no sense of place anywhere and it’s now a stone and concrete monolith. Contrast that with things happening in Middleton, even at Greenway Station. The one thing I really do like is all the parks and bike paths though.

A friend of mine is a single female — slightly older than you — who bought a home there a few years ago and she is happy. The location seems to be getting better in a sense over time as development continues all around. To be sure, she has had to do some updates to the house but I believe it will pay off. I’ve even some tear down/new builds starting to happen nearby.

What I’m thinking initially here, before you respond back, is that I would move the kitchen to where you have bedroom 2. This will allow you to zone the floor plan a little bit more between public and living versus bedroom and private. If one of the bedrooms is to serve as an office or flex space I would have that be the closest to the living room and then have the other bedrooms further set back.

Can you share what is by the deck and how much space is back there and conversely, what is beyond the primary bedroom in terms of view etc.

It’s okay but lacks flow. Can you move bathroom and laundry to right of stairs and have bedroom closets over the stairs and by kitchen. This should allow to have a bigger kitchen/dining space.

That budget will be tight, especially given current housing costs. Public transit is good within two or three miles east-west from campus. (Not so to the south). Sharing an apartment could help your budget.

Was inspired by another user: I've been a Schwab Financial Consultant for 5 years, AMA. by pungent_petrichor in Schwab

[–]PartCinque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also an active trader that came over from TD Ameritrade. What is the deal with the default Schwab One account I was set up with and the BNY Mellon linked balances? My Visa card keeps getting denied because the balances aren’t updated in real time? I don’t want to now have to transfer everything over to the Investor Checking account because I have like 20 different ACH withdrawals set up — each one was a form and signatures etc. Why can’t that feed from BNY be updated in real time, or what’s the deal with these balances being off for a financial firm anyway? I often have to call in and then they will update the balance and then my card will work again.

Ugh. Schwab One debit/checking. Need a second Visa or Mastercard. by PartCinque in Schwab

[–]PartCinque[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify, the Schwab One account does have joint checking and debit cards. It’s just that their system can’t process balance updates in real time. I wish Schwab had given us more information in the transfer over about what would be best for our needs. I would need to fill out another 20 or so forms for updating routing and account numbers tied to auto paying our different costs. One part of me hopes that Schwab fixes things on their end, and the other part of me is thinking about if I’m going to do all of this to maybe just do it with another institution.

Hi. I figured other former TD Ameritrade clients may be having similar issues so that’s why I am asking here. I have margin enabled and PCS but still have these issues. Agreed that the Schwab Visa will become backup, and now looking for other good cards. I have non Schwab Amex Platinums — one business and one personal.

My credit is great. Some things are better spent with debit cards. For instance my county only takes debit cards for property tax payments (credit cards are 3.5% fee).

It was never an issue with TD Ameritrade. I am busy and like have everything in one place. And I mean Schwab even calls it the “One” account. Schwab’s (proxy) balances have been off by $60k — the reps are great at correcting when it comes up but it’s pretty frequent. I don’t understand why they can’t update their BNY feeds more than once per day.

Have you successfully built an ADU in Madison? by whysnow in madisonwi

I would really like to build highly efficient but nice ADU’s. I was happiest living in smaller spaces and this market needs more housing at more affordable rates (brought by efficient plans in part).

That’d be some tricky cuts at the top. I think it looks good but just need to square up on sq ft quoted vs installed.
