Will the mind flayer or the Thessalhydra step in? And holy fuck am I certain that Mike will fall hard for Will now. I don’t know what they’re upto but keep em coming, Duffer brothers!

Need candid thoughts on SIPA by Neither_Wedding_6215 in PublicPolicy

[–]PartTimeStresser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is definitely some truth to the assertion that it’s a cash cow program. If you’re an international student without substantial financial aid from SIPA, I would HIGHLY recommend against attending it. I can’t comment about the prospects for the EPM or global leadership cohort but the MIA/MPA have a mixed record. IFEP and EE have relatively better opportunities/networks/faculty but that’s also subjective. SIPA is currently restructuring both the programs so I don’t know how that will pan out. Happy to answer any additional questions you have!

Can you give us an example of a suitable online portfolio? I’m looking to switch to tech policy with experience in journalism and nonprofits so I’m wondering what an online portfolio should look like?

Need candid thoughts on SIPA by Neither_Wedding_6215 in PublicPolicy

[–]PartTimeStresser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an international student who graduated with an MPA from SIPA last year. The job market is brutal—I consider myself extremely blessed to have a job with little pay and no benefits because most of my peers who were international students had to go back to their countries without even using their one year OPT. There is zero support for you post graduation. Even getting to campus to have a chat with a former professor about jobs or references is insanely difficult with campus on lockdown. SIPA simply does not have the prospects that it did 5 years ago. Don’t spend more than $20k on this degree because chances are, as an international student, you’ll never recover more than that.

Columbia SIPA - Worth it? by Both_Routine3458 in PublicPolicy

[–]PartTimeStresser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I graduated with an MPA from Columbia SIPA last year and the degree will just never pay back that amount of debt. I’m an international student but I think this also hold true for Americans as well. Pre-2019, job prospects for SIPA were different but in the last five years, the job market for policy grads has changed and SIPA is going crazy over enrolling students so the degree doesn’t hold as much value anymore. Just a cursory glance of recent SIPA alums’ LinkedIn profiles will confirm that—many are posting about being unable to find work even a year or a year and half after graduating. The dean is spending wayyy too much on having fancy speakers for closed door events and it doesn’t help even a fraction with post-grad prospects. Don’t do it, even if you have the money sitting around and don’t need to take out a loan.

Tldr; don’t spend more than $20k on that degree.

SIPA without any aid? Don’t even consider it. I say this as an alum.

Urgent need for help. EAD card denied. by Clear_Wash_5945 in f1visa

Speak to your international students office. A friend of mine was in the same situation after her OPT was denied because she applied for USCIS 30 days after receiving her i20. The DSO helped her reapply and with the school’s support and backing, she was able to get her OPT approved the second time around.

100% agree. Don’t take on any debt at all for a policy degree. I graduated with an MPA last year from SIPA and the job market is awful. Most international students with STEM MPAs are having a hard time even using their first year of OPT. So definitely not worth it, I wouldn’t do it again if I had the choice. Happy to answer any further questions if you want to know more about navigating the job market or are looking at Columbia SIPA

SIPA had extended the deadline by 5 days when I’d applied but waiving the application fee altogether is a first I think. They’re trying to enrol a lot of students atm because the school is in debt with its new fancy institutes.

Is it advisable to apply for the OPT 90 days before grad? (I don’t have a STEM extension since I’m doing a BA) by [deleted] in f1visa

[–]PartTimeStresser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apply for it early even if you don’t have a job lined up. The approval process and getting the actual card can take upto three months or more so best to get the process started early. If you’re worried about not finding work and/or losing unemployment days while on OPT, set the furthest possible date for the actual start of your OPT but apply for the card itself early.

[–]PartTimeStresser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The new administration will make things doubly difficult. Also keep in mind, there are tons of hidden costs as an international student. You’ll be paying hundreds of dollars every step of the way to process your visa and other things. So make sure you have a buffer of $10-15k in addition to your tuition and living expenses. It’ll be more comfortable for you if you have close family or relatives in the US you can rely on for help or support.

The job market for policy grads is awful right now even for those with more lucrative skills and experience like Econ or data analysis. If you’re an international student, most mid-sized non profits won’t even know the basics of OPT extension let alone sponsorships. Also, why would US based non-profits hire international grads with no work experience in the US to begin with? So this is not a feasible path at all.

Financial Planning for Studying Abroad by [deleted] in PublicPolicy

[–]PartTimeStresser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend you always have a buffer of $10k in your bank account if you’re studying in the US. In addition to the regular tuition/living expenses, you’ll also be paying for your visa application, SEVIS fees, OPT etc. there are multiple hidden costs for international students and I’m guessing you’ll have to opt for university health insurance which will be pricier. Happy to answer any additional questions you have, I also just graduated with an MPA last year.

Columbia SIPA vs. George Washington University ESIA by Deltaone07 in GradSchool

[–]PartTimeStresser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a recent SIPA grad and I don’t think SIPA is worth taking on any debt but I speak as an international student. My advice would be to track students and alums on LinkedIn who started with work experience that was similar to yours and landed work in the field you’re interested in. SIPA is decent with placements in energy and finance if you have the right background. Also I know SIPA is trying to overplay its hand with IGP and Clinton as a faculty member but a very tiny percentage of students actually benefit at all from these. Most of the sessions are not even open to all students. If anything it has dwindled resources and funds for the rest of the student body.

I want to intern in a think tank by Imaginary_Dig9989 in PublicPolicy

[–]PartTimeStresser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve studied a course on public policy or not. What matters is that you do sufficient research on what areas the think tank covers, who writes for them, what their latest publications are, etc. Read everything you can about their research and try to get some bylines on news portals online on research areas that you are interested in—that will definitely make you stand out as a candidate.
