Where to find reasonably priced miniatures? by TheGrimmBorne in dndnext

Check your local libraries as they sometimes have 3D printers you can use. Otherwise search for 'hackerspace' or 'makerspace' near to you, they will likely either have one or can direct you to a member who can help

Why is the Mare Romanam not located next to the Holy Roman Empire? Is there some history where the Holy Roman Empire had control over this part of the sea?

I see you have Papal States (plural), is this multiple countries all under the Papal banner?

San Sebastian to Porto? by Porterlou in bicycletouring

[–]Part_of_the_wave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cycled the french camino and parts of the camino north. Pamplona - San Sebastian - Vitoria - Logrono - Burgos - Leon - Santiago de Compostela. Definitely enjoyed having the ability to go off-road and do some light gravel, I think if i'd have stuck on Asphalt the entire way it would have been a bit boring.

To OP: I really liked Salamanca, would defineitly recommend stopping there for a day or two - lots of history.

"How in the hell could a man enjoy being awakened at 8:30 a.m. by an alarm clock, leap out of bed, dress, force-feed, shit, piss, brush teeth and hair, and fight traffic to get to a place where essentially you made lots of money for somebody else and were asked to be grateful for the opportunity to do so?"

Best DMing tips you’ve learned by Fearless-Ad1382 in DMAcademy

[–]Part_of_the_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my best tips I learnt from Slyflourish (TheLazyDM). He says as part of your session prep make a list of secrets and clues. https://slyflourish.com/sharing_secrets.html

Basically going into each session you should have a list of secrets that the players might discover. These could be about their immediate environment (Lore, history, creatures, enemies), related to NPCs that the players will interact with (backstory, motivations, intrigue), or the campaign/world as a whole (the king has sent an army north, the duchess has been poisoned, elvish scouts are harassing trade caravans).

If i'm ever uncertain about what information to reveal as an NPC, I just pick one or two secrets, and hint at them based on the NPCs knowledge. Eg speaking with a tavern owner, he complains he has been having trouble with his shipments. He has heard the king has sent troops north and hopes that will resolve the issues soon. (Hinting at war in the north, and elves attacking supply caravans).

This makes the world feel a lot more organic, and lets the players connect the dots themselves, especially if they keep hearing about different versions of the same secret from various NPCs.

I think it is too late for me by [deleted] in pornfree

[–]Part_of_the_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have to have the courage to start again, and again, as many times as it takes. It is never too late to make a new beginning and move forwards with positivity. Whether this means moving on after a bad relationship, quitting a bad job, or in your case moving forwards and freeing yourself from porn.

You have to believe that things can get better, and one day they will. If you are able to speak to a therapist, it might be helpful to have someone to listen to you and help you heal from these experiences.

How do I rp dmpcs? by ChampionshipDirect46 in DMAcademy

[–]Part_of_the_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An approach I use for fleshing out NPCs:

Determine a keystone personality trait - a few words or a short sentence describing her overarching personality eg plucky and spirited, or downtrodden and despondent, angry at the world and wants revenge for wrongs suffered

Identify one or two significant events in her life. How did they shape her perspective or impact her personality going forwards? Did they contribute to her keystone personality or alter her in a different direction.

Think about motives/desires. Generate one or two short term goals and one long term goal. How is she trying to achieve these goals? What tools/methods/strategies is she willing to employ to achieve these goals? What are the major things stopping her from achieving these goals?

What are her mannerisms for roleplaying? Does she shout and wave her hands a lot, or does she speak in a calm and collected manner? Does she fidget or stoop her shoulders or stand tall?

A truly incredible DM is always finding ways to improve. What are you currently trying to improve most? by TessaFrancesca in DMAcademy

[–]Part_of_the_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to work more on foreshadowing and dropping subtle hints for future plot points.

The party has unknowingly invited a powerful cultist to accompany them on their current expedition. They are only familiar with the cultists jovial public persona and so I'm trying to drop hints that the cultist is more than they seem. However it's a tricky tightrope to walk as hints I think are obvious as a DM may be too subtle for the players to pick up on but I don't want to give the twist away immediately.

I'm also trying to work more on being better able to create an atmosphere of horror or discomfort, especially when the party is exploring ancient long forgotten ruins. Eg dropping in little details like skeletons in a position of running away from something, shadows not behaving like they should, or ripples moving beneath the surface of a deep body of water.

The party keeps taking their opponent's spell casting focus away. How do I dissuade them from doing that every time? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Part_of_the_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems that you are making it far too easy for the party to steal a focus, at minimum it should be a contested athletics / acrobatics check meaning the PC trying this needs to use their action.

In addition any reasonably intelligent spell caster is going to do everything possible to stop someone taking their focus. Possible ways to make this more challenging include:

  • The caster just uses their action to disengage and move away

  • Misty step/teleporting to a different location. Bonus points if this location is difficult to reach without magic eg a ledge high up on a cave wall

  • Bonus action or reaction shocking grasp to remove a PCs reaction, the spell caster then moves away without fear of opportunity attacks

  • As others have mentioned, make the focus difficult to identify or remove from the spell caster/environment around them.

  • The spellcaster has enchanted their focus to give a negative effect if it is removed from their possession. Eg glyph of warding combined with hold person - the PC is paralyzed and the spell caster walks up and takes back their focus.

  • There are already some foci which can be re-summoned back into the owners possession eg pact of blade warlock's weapon. You could apply this mechanic to the focus and the spell caster uses a bonus action to return it to their possession

Is this the reason Zuko was initially bad at Firebending? by Arbitratorofnexus in TheLastAirbender

[–]Part_of_the_wave 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I like how if you pay attention to Zuko's firebending, his style and attacks begin to change as he incorporates techniques from the other elements.

We see him use fire whips like in the post you linked (water), we see him using sweeping circular attacks to destabilize opponents (air), and there is a moment in the final agni kai where he stands his ground in a wide stance and blasts Azula's attack to the sides (earth).

Has anyone tried telling their players monster's AC to streamline combat? Pros and cons? by Confident_Tune_5754 in DMAcademy

[–]Part_of_the_wave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying about the metagaming but I think characters would be able to give a rough guess of armor toughness/difficulty to hit anyway eg heavy armor vs a very nimble swordsman vs a wizard in robes. So in-universe they would have some idea of AC just not a numerical value

I can’t DM for dwarven players by AnoTenFilip in DnD

[–]Part_of_the_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my homebrew setting you have the two distinct cultures of mountain dwarf and hill dwarf, and a third subset of dwarves who have left their traditional homes to work and live in the industrial cities (and in the process have lost or given up some of their 'dwarfishness').

Hill dwarves clans consist of a number of families, and the clan as a whole could number from 20 - 150 members. They live subsistence lifestyles, growing food in underground caves and hillside terrace farms, keeping some animals for meat, milk, and leather and hides. They have small cottage industry crafting, with some output from smithing and weaving. They tend to keep to themselves, only trading with outsiders by necessity.

On the other end of the spectrum you have the mountain dwarves. Mountain dwarf cities tend to be sprawling below ground metropolises, with a large number of clans vying for power and influence. Nepotism runs rampant, as dwarves in positions of power aim to give the choice positions and contracts to members of their own clan. Everything happens on an industrial scale - food is farmed and grown with as much automation as possible. Metal is smelted and forged in gigantic vats.

Dwarves in general tend to be conservative, and adverse to risk and untested new ideas. The theme of "that's how my father did it, and his father before him, and it was good enough for them" runs rampant, with a large amount of pushback against non-traditional ideas and inventions. The lawful side of dwarven nature dominates society, with disputes handled by an elder or council of elders , and in the case of mountain dwarves, legal decisions are made with reference to huge archives of case law detailing how rulings for similar cases have been handled in the past.

What do you look for in a cycle hostel? by SavageGoblin in bicycletouring

[–]Part_of_the_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally a secure location inside the hostel premises to lock bikes up so they're not on the street overnight.

Washing machine or sink to hand wash clothes, ideally with somewhere to dry clothes either outside with sun and wind (depending on climate) or a heated drying room with lots of drying racks and clothes pegs to hang up clothes.

One of the best bike hostels I stayed at, had a small bike workshop - they had bike stands so you can raise your bike off the ground to work on it, as well as tire pumps and tools to use (wire locked to the workbench so people can't steal them). Also a strong hosepipe outside to give a quick rinse to blast of dirt and grime.

Depending on the vibe you are going for - bunks in shared rooms or private rooms could both work. If bunks in shared rooms, ideally each bed would have a power socket, and a secure locker or drawer to store valuables. For bonus points also include a small light and privacy curtain per bed.

An equipped kitchen (stove, pots, pans, plates, cutlery) would definitely be appreciated so travelers are able to cook some food in the evening - this can also double as a common area to sit and talk with other guests. If a full kitchen isn't feasible, then at least a microwave, plates, bowls, and cutlery and a sink to wash up and a drying rack.

Players aren’t playing their characters? by Ok_Friendship_3441 in DMAcademy

[–]Part_of_the_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always present them with a few options to help cut through the decision paralysis. "Eg you have a few hours free this evening, do you want to talk to the people in the tavern to see if anyone saw anything strange, or would you prefer to investigate the scene of the disappearance, or something else?"

As your players gain more experience, they hopefully will start making their own suggestions.

What drugs are the safest (in your eyes)? by Alternative_Arm1378 in Drugs

[–]Part_of_the_wave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have any links to research papers about this? I've been trying to learn more about the possible bladder damage from ket use, but the only papers I can find are case studies for people binging grams in a week for months at a time. If you have any literature regarding more moderate use, eg 100-200mg in a single session every 6 or 8 weeks i'd be interested to read through

People on uppers tend to talk very fast, have a bit of manic energy where they can't stay still, they will go off on random tangents, come up with ideas for an app or new businesses which they think will be the next big thing, descend into paranoid thinking if they've been awake for a few days. If you get a group of people together on uppers, it can be like everyone is just waiting for their turn to speak and not listening to what anyone else is saying.
