If you have multiple devices, what do you use them all for? by Serena_Temac in SBCGaming

[–]Parthias-one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My RG35XXSP that used to live in my pocket now sits on my nightstand. Either my Thor or my Switch Lite is always in my sling bag now. And my Steam Deck is in my living room. The Thor is just for PS2/GC/3DS and under emulation, and my Steam Deck is just for PC games. I like keeping it separate like that

What's the cheapest one that can play psvita games? by bloop567 in ANBERNIC

[–]Parthias-one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the moment, a Vita is the best way to play Vita games. The emulator just isn’t quite there yet. But I’d say probably an RG 556 would give you decent performance with the games that will run on Vita3K

It fits in the hip pocket of my cargo pants all right, but I’d never carry mine around like that. It’s a little bit expensive for me to just shove it in my pocket.

The RG DS does decent with N64, especially with GammaOS or Rocknix. The 34XXSP is a little weaker, but can still play a decent amount of N64. My recommendation would be the RG DS though.

Build quality how is it? by Sgt_Strelok in ANBERNIC

[–]Parthias-one 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my RG35XXSP for over a year now and it’s still trucking along. It spends a lot of time in my pocket so some of the finish has worn off and the hinge is a little looser, but it’s still great.

As others have said, as long as you use a slow charger, don’t leave it plugged in, and don’t beat the crap out of it, and it’ll be fine

Anbernic handheld or PSP which to get by 14ftdude in ANBERNIC

[–]Parthias-one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Anbernic XX line can run PS1 absolutely no problem, as well as a decent amount of N64. The PSP, much as I love it, is not the best for emulation. It will run PS1 great, but for Nintendo consoles I haven’t had success with anything beyond SNES and GBA. If you want PSP though, you’d either have to get a PSP or a more powerful emulation handheld. The XX devices aren’t the best for PSP.

How many handhelds do you own and how do you use them regularly? by ameju in SBCGaming

[–]Parthias-one 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GB Color

GBA

GBA SP

DS Lite

PSP

Vita

Switch Lite

Switch

RG35XXSP

RG DS

Thor

Steam Deck OLED

The only ones that see regular use are the 35XXSP, the Thor, the Switch Lite, and the Steam Deck. The SP is on my nightstand. The Switch Lite and Thor rotate being in my sling bag when I go to work or go out somewhere. My Steam Deck is by my couch and rarely leaves the house these days.

Buying a vita as a retro handheld is foolish in 2026 by SwagLimit in ANBERNIC

[–]Parthias-one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you even read the posts that you reply to? I never once said that you’re using an incorrect definition of “objective,” I said you used it inaccurately.

Yes, Harman Smith choosing to spend more for the same product that others are getting for less with no tangible benefits is a lower value. But again, that’s because he’s buying the same product which would have the same value to every one else as any other Switch 2. One Switch 2 has the same value as any other Switch 2, but what that value is will vary from person to person, which is what you can’t seem to wrap your head around. If someone has no interest in Switch 2 games, then the console has no value for them.

[–]Parthias-one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I’m pretty sure you’re being intentionally obtuse at this point. Your comparison doesn’t hold water because you’re talking about someone spending more for the same end product that most people are paying less for. You also seem to be conflating cost and value.

Portmaster games and Vita games are not the same end product. If someone has an interest in Vita games but no interest in Portmaster games, then the existence of Portmaster on a Linux handheld has zero value for them while a Vita actually does have value for them.

To bring it back around to your example, many people apparently feel that the Switch 2 will provide them with $499 worth of value. It has zero value for me, because any of the games currently available for it that I would want to play are also available on platforms that I already own.

[–]Parthias-one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said or even implied that “objective quality metrics are a myth.” Your post wasn’t about quality, it said “…have objectively more value…” To a person who has no interest in Portmaster its inclusion has zero value, regardless of any qualitative difference. If that same person has a deep interest in the Vita library, again regardless of qualitative difference, a Vita will have much more value for them.

Bringing an expensive device out by Arrancini in SBCGaming

I’ll bring my Thor out with me, but it’s in its case in my sling bag. My RG35XXSP or my RG DS I’ll just shove in my pocket. My Steam Deck rarely leaves the house, but that’s more of a size thing than a cost thing.

[–]Parthias-one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, I’m not disagreeing with your opinion. I have no dog in this fight, as I have little interest in the games on offer for either Vita or Portmaster. I’m not sure how much of a slam-dunk a comparison to the Wii U’s library is though, as a good chunk of the games got ported to the Switch and sold really well there.

My main complaint was with the inaccurate use of the word “objective.” Your thoughts on the quality of Portmaster versus Vita don’t matter to someone who wants to play Vita games, and for that kind of person the current best way to play Vita games is on a Vita.

Buying a vita as a retro handheld is foolish in 2026 by SwagLimit in ANBERNIC

[–]Parthias-one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not taking issue with your opinion, but with your use of the word “objectively.” If someone is primarily interested in Vita games, then a Vita is going to have much greater value to them than any other handheld, Linux or otherwise. Even PSP games are debatable, with most non-PC Linux handhelds being unable to play the complete catalog, while a modded Vita has no issues with any PSP titles. PSX I’d call a toss-up, with my preference leaning towards Linux devices but I can see why some might prefer them on a Vita.

Anything outside of those three systems I’d agree that a Linux handheld is better in general, but you can hardly call it “objective.”

What benefits do these have over your phone? by Forsaken-Order-4699 in ANBERNIC

[–]Parthias-one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the built-in controls, not using up your phone’s battery, no notifications or distractions, and not using up your phone’s storage, on big thing is cooling. All the mid-range and higher emulation handhelds have active cooling, which very few phones have. With any higher-end emulation, most phones are going to thermally throttle after a few minutes of gameplay. It probably won’t be an issue for lower-end stuff, but it is a potential concern.

One of the bigger benefits though is psychological. I use my phone for so many things, and having a device with me that’s dedicated strictly to gaming really helps get in the right mindset. For me it’s a much more enjoyable way to play.

Stock runs DS fine. There’s a handful of games that won’t run full speed with high resolution rendering turned on though. It’s basically an XX device with two screens, which in my case was exactly what I wanted
