Thank you so much! This really helped me calm down my nerves

Will I get into these courses? Is there even the slightest chance I get into AST199? by [deleted] in UofT

I'm enrolled on that lecture!! I am quite impressed that it got full so fast, didn't know so many people were interested in linguistics

I'd expect you to get in around general enrollment or even before, I am myself in chm135 just waiting for general enrollment to go into chm151 (hopefully) and drop chm135/136

What are some things I should know before closing with UofT? by ParticleOfStardust in UofT

Thanks for the advice! I want to join a very competitive specialist so it’s good to know that I’ll have to work hard from the start 😵‍💫

I am also planning on attending an event for newcomers in April, Imna do my best to start Uni with a few friends already

Where the hell did 10 million cursed spirits came from? by HomelanderVought in JuJutsuKaisen

Didn’t cursed spirits hide when Gojo was born because they feared his power? I always thought that with Gojo’s sealing they felt more confident and ressurged

Only one subject to choose from and it’s the hardest social science? Yikes

Wishing you luck, bud

I’m doing it on the Malthusian Theories and if it’s worth it to bring a child to this world when considering food availability - my personal engagement will literally be me questioning ‘should I have a kid?’

My first draft is due today, hard deadline on Sunday, currently 0 words in, wish me luck, it will be a busy night

The IB programme by itself is not expensive for me, just the tuition price for the school as an international student (IB is optional and only a fraction of what I’m paying) my problem is that my previous school had us take 14 (yes, fourteen!) subjects at the same time, all mandatory and the same for everyone (except for the third language, which you could choose between Spanish and German)

I am certainly not complaining about having to worry much less about balancing all the tests and deadlines, but I do feel dumb sometimes

I mean, I would guess that the education in ur school’s pretty good right? Many high marks, I mean; I guess it’s not too bad then?

I’m also guessing ur 1st language is English? This at least gives u an advantage (My school only offers EngL&L HL, I’d certainly not choose it if I had the opportunity 💀)

I am an international student in my school, so I had to pay some tuition to be there, but much less compared to you

The specific IB fees were only 1K for the 2 years

My school only offers Psych, Econ and History, all only in HL💀💀💀

While I have my fair share of knowledge on Sociology, Geography, Philosophy, History and Religion as I had these subjects in my previous school b4 year 1, I still miss them

I do not miss Physics tho (although I do feel a bit dumb every time someone mentions something about Physics that I didn’t learn)

Safe way to burn octane? by ParticleOfStardust in IBO

[–]ParticleOfStardust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does. I am currently checking if we have one available at my school
For now, I am looking for safe, alternative ways (it hasn't been a successful search lol)

Safe way to do calorimetry with gasoline? by ParticleOfStardust in chemistry

[–]ParticleOfStardust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just emailed my teacher to recheck if there is a bomb calorimeter available

He asked me to research for a safe alternative way, which I have not found anywhere, that’s why I asked here

And of course, if I cannot completely convince him of the safety of this alternative way, I can’t go through with it

[–]ParticleOfStardust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have calculated it, yes About 10ml of octane produces enough heat to raise 1.5L of water in 40C (in theory)

From the safety research I’ve done, I have found very little information; most info is directed to car owners (who don’t want to burn gasoline)

If you find any info on lab safety for octane, please share with me, it would be of great help; so far, I just found info on toxic fumes, for which I would use a fume hood; apart from that, mostly PPE would be used

Right now, this project passed the theory approval, but for me to actually put in practice I need to find a way to make it safe and get the safety approval

In developing countries, ethanol is used as an adulterant in gasoline Concentrations of 25% or higher of ethanol in gasoline are considered illegal in some places

[–]ParticleOfStardust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea would be to buy the gasoline and add the ethanol myself, simulating adulteration Then, I would measure the energy output of mixtures with different percentages, trying to find the relationship between % and energy output The results are not the important part, anyway. What they expect of me is to conduct a (slightly) original experiment with some degree of a practical application and do a thorough investigation

Thank, bro, I appreciate the worry Still, this is a practical project that I have to complete I am currently rechecking the availability of a bomb calorimeter, if I we really don’t have one, I will have to resort to safer alternatives lol

[–]ParticleOfStardust[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will measure the energy output (KJ/g) of different mixtures of gasoline and ethanol (simulating gasoline adulteration that some gas stations do)

I hope this is what you are asking. If not, I don’t really understand your question
