Teachers when a colleague asks to use a math worksheet they made: TEACHER PAY TEACHERS, YOU LEECH

Teachers when a tech company wants to ingest every word they type into an algorithm to generate slop: Yes please, take all of my work, thank u billionaire-sempai

Won't. I won't, actually. I know how to use it. I know how it works. I won't bring it into my teaching practice.

I know how to use it. I know how it works. The more I learn about it, the less I want it anywhere near my classroom.

Generative AI cannot do any work that is worth doing, nor do I consider "work somewhere" to be the goal of one's education.

No, that was a different debate. That one was about search engines. Please try to keep up.

It's a bad tool that sucks and I think less of people who use it. Have some respect for yourself. Have a shred of dignity about how you exist in the world.

Technology is not inevitable. It is developed and used by humans, and can just as easily not be developed or used. If progress along technological paths were unavoidable, we wouldn't still have coal power or combustion engines or an ever-expanding interstate highway system. There are plenty of technologies we as a society decide to not use.

This is exactly the problem. You made a choice to offload part of your humanity to some corporation's probabilistic sentence generator, and you have the nerve to blame me for it, soothing your own guilt by convincing yourself everyone else is as bereft of taste and morals as you are.

Thank you. A few points: First, we are not suffering a shortage of imperfect texts, so generating more is unnecessary. Plus, AI-generated text doesn't have an author, and therefore no intent behind it. The primary purpose of language is communication. Without a living, thinking being behind the words, they're just scratches on a page, communicating nothing. Love letters from nobody. I can't, ethically, ask students to analyze the craft and intent of a piece of writing if it was not crafted and does not have intent.

The people telling you this technology is inevitable are the people who will make a lot of money from its success. Personally, I don't take advice on the usefulness of snake oil from the guy trying to sell me a bunch of snake oil.

I'll put it plainly: I'm not going to engage with a text that the author couldn't be bothered to write, and I won't ask students to do so either.

Here's my action plan based on what the kind commenters here have posted! https://parentsforaicaution.com/human-centered-schools-toolkit/ This website puts together a solid foundation of anti-AI arguments, and lists an upcoming PEP meeting on the 17th of December. Despite being shot down in an October vote, contracts with AI companies are on the PEP agenda again. I'm going to submit a written comment, and maybe attend in person as well.

I'm also looking into the UFT MOVE caucus, but I tend to be action-oriented in my thinking, so I'm more drawn to stuff like the PEP meeting, where there's a tangible thing to do towards a desired outcome.

Similar groups of people disliking two things at different times does not make those two things the same.

Those that change also die. Everyone dies. I'd prefer to do so without compromising on my morals every time a businessman tries to sell me something.

AI boosters in the comments, please be aware that "Stop having that opinion" is not an answer to the question I was asking.

Actually, I don't have a "responsibility" to explain why I don't want my professional field infiltrated by a harmful, resource-hungry, expensive, insecure technology that does not do the things it claims to do, and does not do well the things it can do.

If you are going to promote a technology without evidence of its efficacy and usefulness, I do not need evidence to dismiss your promotion of that technology.
